Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Targeting 60FPS, Single-Player Might Be Lower

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End developer Naughty Dog has offered new insight into the frame rate for the upcoming action-adventure game.

Speaking with GameSpot, lead designer Kurt Margenau said Naughty Dog is targeting 60fps for the game's multiplayer mode, though he wouldn't commit to a figure for the single-player campaign.

"If you look at the demo, and just how much is happening on the screen...physics...It's insane," Margenau said about the new single-player Uncharted 4 demo from E3.

Naughty Dog said previously that getting Uncharted 4 to run at 60fps has been "really f**king hard." That doesn't mean it won't happen, and with the game now scheduled to launch in 2016 instead of 2015, Naughty Dog would conceivably have more time to perform additional optimizations.

But one thing is for sure: Naughty Dog wants to do what's best for Uncharted 4, even if that means a frame rate below 60fps.

"We want Uncharted to look like the best game we can possibly make," Margenau said. "Solid frame rate is the most important thing; that it's consistent. But in multiplayer, we are targeting 60fps still. So we know how it feels on the stick to have [60fps] for a multiplayer game, to have that responsiveness."

In terms of resolution, Uncharted 4 will be 1080p.

One thing that puts me off from consoles is the 30 fps framerate. It's ok for RPGs, but for shooters I would expect more. Why don't they include presets, like 720p@60fps or 1080p@30fps, for people to choose?

@wearelegion5000: Publishers can't advertise any lower settings, 720p in 2015 would be rather embarrassing. It isn't just about the resolution, there's a whole lot of other factors running on the screen that would need to be toned down to get a stable 60fps. And then there's this popular belief that performance should be strictly decided for the player on consoles.

@justbefahad: They could however advertise 1080p 60 fps, only to have the 60 fps be at a lower resolution and call it "smoother" or "faster (60 fps)". That's one way to get around the marketing and dummies clamoring for it anyway. I'd choose the higher framerate over the resolution every time.

@GabrielX-X: You'll hardly ever notice the difference between 30fps & 29fps or 60fps & 59fps, unless you mean if it's constantly dipping. That would be a problem.

Interesting that it might go for a split-presentation a bit like how GEoW is shaping up. I guess it makes sense though as presentation between single/multiplayer is already split.

@gottago42: Nice try, but Tomb Raider doesn't even look close to Uncharted 4. They also stated they are "targeting" 1080p for Tomb Raider.

Greatness awaits somewhere hidden appearently. Why push harder if it can't handle above 30, i'd be pleased to have consistent 30 fps all over the game instead of having 60 on multiplayer and dropping to 30 fps when switched to single player; it's inconsistent gamewise.

While I agree its nice and silky smooth to see 60fps, i have played games at 30 fps (and lower) for basically my entire life, so its not gonna hurt me much.

Second son had 60fps and it was cool... Was it a better and much more enjoyable game for it? ... Not really IMO... So im fine with 30fps, especially if its from ND

@snake3rules: Second son wasn't 60 fps, it dips between 30-45 fps on digital foundry videos, they even added an option to lock the frame at 30. The game is fun anyway.

@ignisnobueno: I think it's important for shooters. It drastically lowers input lag which to me makes the gunplay a lot more satisfying, especially if you're playing the game competitively. Uncharted 3 had awful input lag and as a result, pulling off headshots was very difficult. It was the same deal with Killzone 2. GTA 5 on the ps4 and xbox one has horrendous input lag which even tops what was on last gen.

@ignisnobueno: I've played the game on the ps3, ps4 and PC. Auto aim is an absolute must on consoles. The PC version can run at a higher frame rate so aiming is easier but the game is still extremely unresponsive in comparison to other shooters (even running fullscreen with v-sync off). I do all my gaming on a 144Hz TN panel monitor which has very low input lag.

Could give a damn about fps. As long as it's at least 30 and locked, all good. I mean, I still play old school Tomb Raider. I grew up on like 5 fps games, so it was never a big deal for me. That being said, Metro Redux was noticeably amazing in the fps department. Never saw a game flow so smoothly.

@sandman338: That 'fluctuating frame rate' of yours was fixed easily by a patch.It onlyfluctuatedd only when the player threw some grenade which got freaking fixed by a patch.

It's a well known fact and proven to that games generally run better on the ps4 than xone, saying otherwise is just stupid.

I thought they said already that SP would be 30fps? And then people lost their minds? Is this indication that now they have pressure to swing in the other direction with it? Hate to say it, ND, but now when the graphics get scaled back to hit 60 people will lose their minds over the visual fidelity "downgrade" and "false advertising" instead :-P

I'll just leave it at this: these have always been some of the best looking games on consoles, and they have always played just fine (in framerate's respect) at 30fps.

I'm not saying 30 is as good as 60, and I think optimization towards 60fps online will pay off. But of all the complaints I've had about the series (and I have a number), the framerate has never been amongst them.

In the GS e3 stage interview he seemed to pretty much say they weren't going for 60 anymore.

I have a feeling todays new comment is to backtrack on that statement, or at least keep it as a possibility, since they could still optimize, and they will probably try, since they know gamers want that.

I don't spend money on PCs to get a realistic looking female running at 60 frames per second. Instead I use that money to take a real female out to dinner and we have our own 60 frames per second show in the bedroom wink wink. Then quickly put on a movie after, while I sleep.

@mkeezay22: The only difference I see is that when a game runs at 60fps on PS4 its because of the awesome powa! In yo face Xbox! But when it doesn't its no big deal because its for some special reason like cinematic feel or all the amazing stuff going on. I don't care as long as the game looks good and runs smooth. But people need to be a little more consistent in their comments. Either 60fps is a big deal or it isn't. You can't change your mind to suit every game that comes out.
