UK Chart: GTAV becomes fastest selling game ever in UK

GTA V takes number one spot with 89 percent of sales for the week, while PES 2014 makes its debut at two.

Rockstar's critically acclaimed GTAV has stormed to the top of UK chart this week, becoming the fastest-selling game of all time in the region.

No Caption Provided

GTAV also becomes the overall 24th biggest selling title of all time in the UK, selling more in its launch week than all other GTA titles combined, and besting previous launch week record holder Call of Duty: Black Ops by almost a quarter of a million units.

On the individual platforms the game is even bigger, becoming the 11th biggest on Xbox 360 and 10th biggest on PlayStation 3 after just five days on sale. The split of sales between platforms is fairly even, with 57 percent on Xbox 360 and 43 percent on PS3.

Despite accounting for almost 89 percent of sales for the week, GTAV wasn't the only new entry to the chart. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 made its debut at two, while Aliens: Colonial Marines re-entered the chart at eight thanks to retail discounting and promotion.

Elsewhere, The Last Of Us jumped up to three from 27, Saints Row IV dropped from one to four, and Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning makes its chart debut at 22.

The Top 10 UK chart for the week ending September 21:

1. Grand Theft Auto V
2. Pro Evolution Soccer 2014
3. The Last Of Us
4. Saints Row IV
5. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist
6. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
7. Diablo III
8. Disney Infinity
9. Aliens: Colonial Marines
10. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix

Just think how much more it would've sold if it also came for the PC alongside the consoles.

@fadol87 frankly i would pick console version against PC for this game, as it envolves more driving and flying than shooting, at least in my case

@Viral-venom13 that would envolve me buying a gamepad in addition to PC version of the game, so there is a difference

What difference would it make really if you had that choice to choose? You could take those console controls and utilize them on a PC to play the game and it wouldn't feel much different really!

Great for UK retailers and UK publishers alike. Things are going well for the games industry. Now we just have to see what happens in November

@AlexFili For a small set of countries that comprise the UK we don't half buy up games. We're a nation obsessed with video games.

@BelaidKL Nah FIFA 14 isn't as popular as GTA5 by any stretch of the imagination. It might get to 2 if it's lucky

@AlexFili You never know, it hasn't failed to do so year after year.. The fan base is big enough to challenge GTA (albeit GTA may be the more popular game)

In the UK, pretty much all of the semi-casual male gamers buy Fifa, myself included (even though I also play core games).

GTA sales just proves that Third Person Shooter > First Person Shooter.

@frozengrudge GTA is primarily a sandbox game that has a thrid person shooting mechanic. A main third person shooter as a genre doesn't have an open world and the main gameplay focus is on shooting. Your hipster hating on FPS is just lame.

@frozengrudge Nope. FPS usually sells more. GTA V only managed to sell more because of the overhype and excessive advertisement.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next COD game (not Ghosts, the one after that) sells more than GTA V...

Hey, nice to see TLoU make it's way back up their!

Someone must have put in some serious promotion, i thought that game had reached it's sales peak already.

@shingui5 Was there a price drop from one or more major retailers perhaps?

You often get a spike of sales as some people are waiting for the price drop before making the purchase.

Googling the major retailers in the UK, i can't see a price drop, everyone is still around £29-£35, so i have no idea why TLoU got a sudden sales spike.

Renewed interest i suppose, perhaps from videos circling the net.

@shingui5 @gilldominic @shingui5 @gilldominic I know why, it may be because TLOU comes with GTA5 and ps3 500gb bundle.

I know cause I have one on order.

Just look up

@shingui5 @gilldominic Perhaps GTAV actually had a positive effect on another game's sales for a change!?

Maybe it renewed so many people's interest in video games in general, that some people decided to get TLoU as well as, or instead of, GTAV!?

Didn't GTAV already become the fastest-selling entertainment product in history, worldwide?

I think that would also imply it was the fastest-selling game, and also the fastest selling in pretty much every country.

@Scorpion1813 Well GameSpot has a major UK base, so I don't think that it's particularly unreasonable for them to report UK based gaming news?

That's not the point.

The point is that GTAV is already reported to be the fastest selling entertainment product worldwide.

We don't need to be told that it's the fastest selling game in the UK, since that was pretty much implied already.

I never mentioned America, so no, I'm not implying USA = the whole world. In fact, I get pissed off at other people for doing just that.

I mentioned worldwide and I meant worldwide. Nothing less!

And yet the headline states "becomes fastest selling game ever in UK".

Since we already know that (it's old news), the headline would have been better off mentioning that GTA has broken several records in the UK.

@Scorpion1813 @gilldominic Well this article provides clear information about just how well GTAV has done, including a proportion of the total market (in the UK).

Not only that, but it details the other best selling games in the UK also.

I'd say it provides some useful additional insight as well as UK specific information.

Since GameSpot has a major base in the UK, as I have already said, I think that it is fair that they report on UK related gaming news!

@Scorpion1813 @gilldominic You seem to imply America >= World, which is not the case.

Also being a UK made game, it is nice to hear it is also doing well in the UK.

On a side note, I wonder if the fastest selling game has anything to do with no piratebay version.... I mean PC version.

All hail the new overlord of sales: GTA V! Running from cops proved more successful than Black Ops.

Otherwise, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition still refuses to leave the chart and TLoU made a tremendous comeback, jumping 24 places up to third. Two other worthy success stories .
