Ubisoft Says Players More Open to DLC Now -- Are You?

“DLC is pretty much accepted."

No Caption Provided

Ubisoft VP of digital publishing Chris Early has said that players don’t resist DLC and other digital content for games as much as they used to.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Early noted that barely any players complained about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s “Time saver” DLC packs, which unlock resources and hidden locations in the game you can also earn through normal play.

"There was no resistance," Early said. "Maybe there were 12 guys somewhere who said something, but whatever. As a whole, there wasn't a problem."

Whereas in the past players would complain that such features should be added to the game as cheat codes, Early believes that Ubisoft is seeing less of a negative reaction these days because the publisher does a better job of communicating with the player community. He said that Ubisoft also tries to make DLC that adds to the overall experience instead of asking players to pay for content that should be in the game to begin with, so they don’t feel forced to pay for anything.

"I think there are some models that are accepted now,” Early said. “DLC is pretty much accepted. Season pass is pretty much accepted. Now it's interesting when you start to think of Season Pass as a Service Pass. For our Season Pass holders, I know we hold events for them specifically, so it's little bit more than just DLC content. So there's an evolution going on there."

Are you less skeptical of DLC than you used to be? Let us know in the comments below.

I didn't have that much of a problem with DLC until I recently bought Gears of War 3 again on XBL. DLC is REQUIRED to play every game mode but ONE, which isn't even very popular! That's such BS! Come on Epic games, don't pull that s**t on me! I don't want to buy your stupid season pass just to play your damn game online. So frustrating. I miss the time where DLC was expansion packs instead of stupid individual $10 map packs and crap.

Put the material into the game, we are paying a lot now for short games, I am not for DLCs period. I see, milk the gamers for every dime and give them nothing in return. Greedy!.

I still think DLC is one of the worst things to happen to video games. Not because I am opposed to add-on content, and not even because of the amount of money charged for DLC, but because it causes some developers to act as though they do not have to finish a game to release it. They just figure any missing content or unfixed bugs can be dealt with later through DLC.

No, Definetelly no!
Players should start a #NoDLCCampaign

Look at the gaming industry now with these DLCs.

Metro Last Light - Ranger Mode DLC - The way its meant to be played, but only with a DLC.

New Alien game will have another mode, only with DLC.

Destiny is not even out yet but they have a lot of DLCs planned.
Games are being released unfinished and with planned DLCs! This has to stop, i don't buy DLCs ever!

In the past DLCs were real expansions of the game, they were released like 6-12 months after the game release. Look at the old ones, think about Half Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2, they are real expansions for the game, that is a worth DLC, but no, not these ones.

If players don't stop this now in the future we will see games like:
50% Of the game. Want to play it 100%? Get a DLC.

Want a to play on Medium or Hard? Buy a DLC, only easy mode is included.

THIS NEEDS TO STOP!

personally i am NOT ok with most DLC content. As many others have stated paying money for something that should be included in the game in the first place is ridiculous. Many DLC's that i've actually gotten (only when heavily discounted) have been additions that seem like the developers have left out of the original game either on purpose (to make more money) or because they release the game before it was finished.

In my opinion a DLC is worth paying for when it adds substantial content which develops the game story even further. And paying 1/3 of a games cost for a DLC that doesn't even last 1/10th of the games length is just stupid. As i stated earlier i will buy DLC content but only if it adds substantial content AND is cheap.

The thing I have found is, some DLC's (missions/quests) sometimes have no fallout/commented in in the game after. I feel this is poor playing. Some DLC is good, some is just a cash cow. Some DLC's, ie; That affect latter editions like ME2 had a great impact on ME3.Should never be that tied in. They should enhance, not force.

I am, as long as the game is launched in a "complete" state. And releasing a DLC in less then one month after the game's release date sounds greedy and shady as phuk to me. I liked DLCs when they were more like real game expansions, not a weapon or a bandanna.

I still haven't bought Mass Effect 3 because I don't want to support the despicable DLC model that all three games have had. Story critical portions of the game as DLC that never gets included in a "Complete Edition"!

I'm waiting for a "Game of the Year Edition" of Bioshock Infinite too. I really want to play it but not gonna bother until I know I'm getting the full experience. (I know that those DLC's are more like the old fashioned expansions but hey).

This is why I buy Game of the Year or Classic editions of the games that interest me, and NEVER bother with new releases anymore. Already discounted, patched, and includes all the DLC/expansions.

Like others have pointed out, I don't have too much of a problem with DLC if it is for bonuses like extra costumes, getting gear early, etc.; which don't really affect the core game at all. If on the other hand the developers force me to buy DLC in order to complete the game like I experienced with Tiger Woods 13 in order to complete the Masters series, I'll simply drop the game/franchise outright.

That may have a lot to do with the reason why UBI is claiming they aren't seeing the resistance any longer. It may be due to the fact that many of us are beyond sick of EA's business model and just don't want to deal with it.

I don't have a problem with companies offering "time savers" or starter gear as DLC. I won't pay for it, but if someone else is willing to that's fine. What I'm not crazy about is being pushed into paying $15 for a single quest line that should either be included in the initial release or bundled with other content as an expansion pack.

Dev's are still figuring out DLC it seems. DLC that is nothing more than some weapons/armor or just maps and costs $15…..needs to stop.

DLC like Lair of the Shadow Broker or the last one for Skyrim (Solsteim isles or something? can't remember name) are shining examples of DLC done right. DLC should operate like episodic/mini expansions, not as an opportunity to squeeze money out of your fans.

DLC isn't inherently good or bad. Just like with the original games themselves, quality varies, and for DLC to work timing and implementation are crucial.

This year, The Last of Us had a fantastic piece of DLC. A year after Infinite came out, too long in my opinion, it had two pieces released; one was okay, the other was great. But part two did some retconing that didn't sit well with some. I liked it, but I know it kind ruined a few peoples attachment to the story.

The best DLC ever, in my opinion, is the Artorias of the Abyss DLC for Dark Souls. It expanded extensively on the lore and world of the original, had amazing levels and content (especially bosses), and became many peoples favourite areas of the game. The are other examples, but DLC can certainly be an important addition to the game it is supporting.

I am pretty sure a lot of people in North Korea are open to bending over and take one on the butt if that means they get to eat. Perhaps Ubisoft should relocate their senior management to Pyongyang.

Sounds like wishful thinking on his part. I'm sick to death of DLC and pre-order bonuses and all of the crap they insist on doing with every release in order to make sure that you don't get the most out of your game unless you buy it for every system and pre-order it from every outlet. It's a racket.

That's why I love CD Projekt Red. They tend to release the DLC for free, as was the case with The Witcher 2. They not only included the pre-order stuff in later patches, but also new additions to the game that a company like EA or Ubisoft would have charged $14.99 for. That's why I buy CD Projekt titles on day one, and why I wait until heavily discounted complete editions for most other games, because those games are designed to deprive me of content in any other form.

"Accepted" isn't the same thing as "welcomed". There's less push-back now because people are sick of complaining about a policy that the publishers have indicated they're never going to change. It's actually pretty appalling how they've beaten gamers into weary resignation and are calling it consent.

Also it trivialises the issue to talk about DLC as if it's all the same. Where DLC is a substantial, reasonably-priced expansion, developed after a full and complete game, that's brilliant. Where it's vapid microtransactions, day-one DLC, or other instances of cash-grabbing masquerading as content, it makes me pretty goddamn angry to see such greed impose itself on my entertainment.

I know game development is expensive, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do DLC. The first makes you money, makes your fans happy, and extends your artistic vision: look at the Artorias expansion for Dark Souls. The second pisses everyone off: look at how EA, Activision and Ubisoft try to milk you at *every* opportunity in *every* one of their AAA games.

No I don,t like them. I paid for a DLC caracter in MK9 and for Mega Man10. I have Fallout 3 and Borderlands 2 game of the year edition because I wouldn't buy the DLC otherwise and this is pretty much it for me.

I love Nintendo for this, there is so much stuff to find that unlock something instead of a trophy or to add something we need to pay for it ...

@quaker04 Pretty much. Like the spicy Grils once sang: two become one. It's horseshit, we can all agree we don't like DLCs. Yeah, I bought some, but it was like buying a drop from an ocean of DLCs. EA games sometimes seem like they are giving us free-to-play games so we buy in game content later, only we pay for the games, so, yeah, horseshit! We mostly don't like DLCs, I believe. Speaking of EA, I heard PC version of Garden Warfare, from PopCap, will get free DLCs, FREE! Is that true?

No i'm not either, studios trying to nickle and dime me for their product meanwhile the quality of the experience is diminished year after year. Sure we get gains in graphical sophistication and technology but developers and publishers are so busy chasing eye popping experiences that they've forgotten to make games fun. the most fun game I think I've ever played is Dota 2 and its free.

after that games like tetris and pokemon come to mind.

I think game studios should ask themselves is my game fun enough to be free to play? if it is its probably a good game. and they can charge me money for it instead of nickle and diming me with a pay to win version if it isn't fun enough that I'd want to endure f2p nickle and diming then its probably just not that good of a game.

Its a tragedy of the commons where the core gaming demographics wants are being lost in the noise of those who are more casually interested in the games and the studios are chasing that signal to their own detriment in a lot of cases.

This kind of short term thinking will tend to get you into trouble. look at Nintendo they turned their backs on their hardcore audience because they thought they'd charmed the prom queen but now that joe public have moved on nintendo is caught holding a warehouse full of consoles intended for a market that is "over them" backpedaling as quickly as possible to try and produce games that are more appealing to their old audience true gamers (people who buy more than 2 games a year)

Videogames depreciate in value so much over time. Too expensive now? Wait till later. My xbox 360 and Wii U is more than enough right now. I have a huge backlog I haven't had time to play. Depending on who has the best games 5 years from now, I'll get an Xbox One or a PS4. And I'll get it, and the games for dirty cheap. Same thing for DLC.

Either don't buy it, or buy it 3~6+ months down the road...when it is heavily discounted.
