Ubisoft: Gamers want Assassin's Creed every year

Montreal boss Yannis Mallat says as long as quality remains, gamers will come back every year for more.

Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat does not think gamers are turned off by the idea of a new Assassin's Creed game every year.

No Caption Provided

"No," Yannis Mallat told Eurogamer this week. "The players will tell us. Right now there are more and more coming into the franchise, so I don't see that day."

Mallat explained that as long as each new entry is a quality product, gamers will continue to come back every year for more.

"It's our breakthrough. When you have quality content, the frequency of coming out with the game is not an issue at all. On the contrary, people expect more and more of that content," Mallat added. "So it's natural to be able to provide that content. The gamers are happy and it's our job to make them happy."

Ubisoft has released a new core Assassin's Creed game every year since 2009. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag launches October 29 and a follow-up is already in the works.

just because we buy it, doesn't mean we want it every year. the less the wait, the less it feels special

Utter crap. Gamers only buy it becuase no companies are using innovation anymore. I hope the PS4 and 720 bring some new ideas and IPs. More then one sequel now a days is just lazy and crap.

I'm gonna get crap for this, but as long as people keep buying, hell yeah I would keep making them. There is no real argument against that. As far as I'm concerned, the quality hasn't dropped off anyway. AC Revelations wasn't so great, but every other one was top notch. Don't like it, show it by not buying.

lol. They (gamers) will let us know when too much is too much huh? Ask the music genre turned out by cranking them out like that. By the time they knew what hit them the whole industry around it had disappeared.

Considering they have 7 different branches of Ubisoft from all around the world collaborating on this game, it's obvious how they are able to deliver a game every year. People misunderstand (with this title at least) that just because its a new game in consecutive years, doesn't mean a few people in the company just quickly knocked it out without care. When you have 7 Ubisoft sub-companies working on something together, of course they will be capable of releasing a quality came every year. It's all about resources people... Even with CoD, they alternate between publishers so it looks like a game is coming out every year but in reality its every 2 years per publisher. It just carries the same name under the parent company which is Activision.

I only bought the AC numbered sequels. Never touched any of the spinoffs. As for AC IV, I don't think I'll be buying it this year. Naval battles are cool and all but I didn't really enjoy them. Set the game in feudal Japan and it'll be a day one purchase for me.

Wrong Ubi WRONG!!!!. Gamers dont care if its every year. We just want a good QUALITY game. We dont want companies milking the game for money like God of War creators are doing now. Seriously they couldve made a brand new Pirate game away from the AC franchise, why soil and wreck the franchise but talking it away from its roots and focusing on naval warfare? I hated that part in AC3, make a seperate pirate franchise for other gamers if they like it but stop milking the AC series and wrap it up soon

They did this when Splinter Cell started right? But one every year? I'm starting to think that "gamer fatigue" isn't something that C. Yerli made up to justify Crysis 3 reception.

Causation vs Correlation.

People buy them every year because you release them every year. There's nothing suggesting the number of sales would either increase or decease if you, say, made one game every two years. Or just made numbered sequels every 3 years instead of filling the time with side games. Assassins Creed 3 was something of a joke title, considering there had already been 4 console titles before its release and god knows how many handheld titles.

No, no we don't. Ubisoft wants us to buy 1 every year, but I'd be very happy with 1 every 2 years

Well, they can do what they want, but I'm starting to get tired of the franchise, while other franchise like MGS I could never get tired of. If that because of the speed of releases? I don't think so. I'd buy a MGS each year, lol. (as long as quality stays the same)

They're right you know. It's called the dollar vote, people keep buying the new Assassin's Creed so there's no reason to not release them yearly.

Consumer actions (dollars) speak louder than words.

No, a hundred times no, that's a disrespectful assumption to make saying gamers will come back for more every year, in the end all you're going to do is kill your own franchise, release a great game, let anticipation build, let people really start to want....no desire your game, otherwise you're just going to have a stale Franchise....and Milk the cow till it's got nothing left to give.

I was fine with AC every year until the massive quality drop in Revelations. Still bough AC3 last year, hoping the series would take a turn... but yeah, I'm not buying AC4. Fool me twice, Ubisoft, shame on me.

A lot of gamers are okay with playing the same recycled formula with no real innovation, but others really want to see something new and interesting with each release. Also, I have to draw attention to Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero, whose quality didn't necessarily go down with yearly releases but the over saturation of them caused their demise. I personally prefer Take Two's approach, that multiple entries in a series released too frequently will leave gamers growing tired of them sooner or later. Even at this point, AC's story line feels like it should have logically ended but is still going so that more games can be made. I personally won't be supporting the series any longer, haven't since brotherhood.

I don't mind if it comes out every year. Love the series and the story is always interesting. But I agree with most others here. Quality > Quantity

No gamers feckin' won't.

12 year old fan boys want it every year, real gamers want new installments as often as possible while the developers still use enough time to properly make the game.

AC3 did many things right but failed to deliver anything new or any interesting characters. If AC4 is also deprived of the elements that makes a game come to life than I'm done with day-1 purchases.

As long as each entry in the series is well made, I don't see what the problem is. I must admit that I haven't played any of the games in the franchise, but the critical response is great and the games sell really well. When gamers get sick of the franchise, they will stop buying the games and Ubisoft will have to change things up or put their money into other projects.

I really liked AC3. However, it'd be nice to see another game on the level of AC2 in terms of polish (both technical and in mission design), story, voice-acting, etc. As long as the annual deadline looms, that might not happen.

I personally didnt came across a such game series which yearly improved enough every year to convince me.
After AC 1 and 2,number 4 looks allright to me. If they dont bomb the game with worthless DLC's,that is.

Well I actually quite agree with that. I used to say something like that a little before AC3 was announced... As long as the quality is sky high and as long as they keep coming out with also other great triple A games I will continue to buy this series.
I hope they will adress the DRM and season pass problems though (read: get rid of them).

What gamers are they talking to? I would rather have a quality product with obvious differences, not like COD. This is a dumb idea.

I kinda enjoyed Assassins Creed III. It had the best gameplay I think, but the story line just kinda bored me. I felt like I was killing much more important people in the previous games and when I had my main targets in III it was just like "well these guys want to do bad things but technically they can't actually do any of the bad things they really want to cuz they don't have any pieces of eden". In the other games it just seemed like the enemies were competant compared to some dude who slept with an indian once and his ragtag bunch of uninteresting lackies.

killing big game animals, boat missions, and running in trees was nice tho.

*Shakes head in disgust* I hate this commuity. 3 years Ive been a member. 3 years Ive read nonsensicle trolling, hipster spat, misguided opinions, overzealous aggression, and simply hypocritic statements... but none like this. As a community Gamespot is dead. With no middle ground to balance the posts ALL YOU PEOPLE DO IS COMPLAIN! You all sicken me. If its popular "it sucks". If it sells well "it sucks". If you support it youre a "sheep". If you enjoy a game that doesnt last at least 50 hours youre an "idiot with too much money. If you defend a game you like youre a "trolling fanboy". Are there no depth to which you sink, guys? All I have to say to this post is ,so what if people like it and it sells well? Who cares? Theyre fun and people play them. No one ranted about these games until AC3 was first announced. Why is this any different? It looks fine and AC3 was good fun too with some minor flaws. I dont wanna hear s*** about me being a "fanboy" either. Yall are just taking this WAY out of hand.

This is totally not true Ubisoft, what the gamers want and what the gamers need is totally different. If you release Assassin Creed every year you can guarantee that you will struggle for idea's and the IP popularity will just dive. If it can be achieved correctly then so be it, but as we have seen with Activision's CoD that although it is popular, it is not really offering anything new. Be careful Ubisoft, I wouldn't wanna cause a fight here.

I've seen numerous times EA state things like "the future of the industry is...", and "people want....", they the opposite is true.

I think Ubisoft are taking business advice from EA: Try to convince the public they want the crappy service they are being given, or will be given in the future.

No I don't, really. If anything the much needed improvements in 3's gameplay were overshadowed by the amount of games that were pumped out. I just couldn't get into it, about 10 hours in I just gave up because it couldn't suck me in. Then they announce a FULL NUMBERED sequel? You're kidding me right? You can have this series, it seemed interesting with the first two games being some of my favorites but now you've clearly shown you want nothing from this series but a yearly revenue generator. You can have it.

I don't like the way the industry is going, they think that they know what's best for us. Eidos told us that we needed multiplayer in Tomb Raider, EA told us that we need Battlefield 4, micro transactions in every game, always on internet connection to name a few, Cevat Yerli says that Crysis 3 is a masterpiece and that in the future, Single Player games need to 'go away'. Well guess what, we know what we want in a game and it's not the bullshit you keep feeding us.

it's complicated. I really loved the previous games and didn't like the last one. As for me, I'd better wait a little bit longer and get a great game with an exciting story and stuff. But this trailer... The pirates and sharks - I don't know if I want to play it. Of course, I'm going to buy the game in the end to see how good or bad it is and ubisoft is getting my money in any case.

AC never had quality, except in the first one. People have gotten bored because the games are actually boring, and that's why people want them to take a break with it so they can improve it.
