TurboGrafx-16 Mini Pre-Orders Now Available, Full Game Lineup Detailed

Fifty games, more or less.

Konami has announced more release details for its upcoming retro TurboGrafx-16 Mini, including a release date and the full game library. The mini-console will include 50 games, though some are both English- and Japanese-language versions of the same title. The TurboGrafx-16 Mini releases on March 19, 2020.

The mini-console will be available for purchase from Amazon, and pre-orders are now open as a Prime subscriber exclusive for Amazon Prime Day. The name and design of the mini-console will be different based on territory based on its roots in the region--TurboGrafx-16 Mini in America, PC Engine Core Mini (after the Core Grafx) in Europe, and PC Engine Mini in Japan. The price is set at $100 / €89.99 RRP.

Pre-order TurboGrafx-16 Mini at Amazon

The full game line-up includes 24 TurboGrafx-16 games, and 26 PC Engine games. Each region will get roughly the same library, so English-speaking customers will get the collection of Japanese-language games too. The one exception is to the Japanese PC Engine Mini, which will Tokimeki Memorial instead of Salamander.

The libraries themselves have some crossover. Both libraries have the Neutopia games, Ys games, and Military Madness. But there are also some curious spots where the two don't overlap. It has the Japanese version of Bonk, and then the English version of its sequel, Bonk's Revenge. The two have different variations of Bomberman. Snatcher, one of the earliest games from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, was only ever released in Japan, so this only includes that version.

Bonk's Revenge, but not Bonk's Adventure? That's like SMB 2 without SMB!

@ticktockman1979: The 3DO had some good games, but those games were generally available on the PC or PS1 or sometimes the Sega CD.

@gsbliss: I know. It was one of the best Turbo games. It was the first game I bought when I got a Turbo Express back it 91. It was never released on the NA Wii virtual console (as far as I know). Such a great game to be overlooked.

They also overlooked Devils Crush!

@TribbleOutcast: Also, the weird sequel is good too. In fairness though, it's pretty cool they included Rondo of Blood.

of all the mini consoles this one has me most interested. I was hoping for all those games from PC Engine Games and TG-16 Games were all in one packages though.

Definitely some good games, but I don’t want non-localized games (I’ll gladly take good Japanese only games...I just want the, localized if these aren’t), and I don’t want multiple copies of the same game.

If it had 50 actual games I’d say that’s pretty good, but...

Also, interestingly, this seems to include CE and SuperCD games, and possibly Supergraphix games? These definitely aren’t all base Turbographix games, which is cool.

As always I wish it included more games and could run actual games!

If I still had any money I’d buy it for sure,

Where the heck is Bonk 3? And with so few games there’s a bunch here I’d dump for other ones. Ninja Spirit wasn’t worth much IMO.

I first played Dungeon Explorer and I loved it on the Wii VC. I saw with great disappointment that Dungeon Explorer II was only released in Japan for the Wii VC (no Europe, no US). I want to play so bad that game. Imagine my disappointment yet again for not having this title in that one while the have the first game twice!

@CyberEarth: Yes, there was definitely a Double Dragon II: The Revenge (PC engine). That would also have been a good game to add to this collection. I actually play this game with my PC Engine emulator for my Computer and is a really decent game.

Here is a Playthrough of the game in youtube

Aww darn. No PC Engine version of River City Ransom. Well, the SFX on that version are pretty lackluster compared to the NES version anyway.

I'm good. I might have some happy memories of TG-16, but I've played Dungeon Explorer damn near to death, and... that's about the only one on the list of TG-16 games I've played. The rest (Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, Bonk's Adventure, Splatterhouse, Vigilante) are absent.

Pass.

@edargnwod: dunno if it has to do with the absense of Strider but so far as i know it required an "arcade card" to run the Super CD...

@sladakrobot: Lords of Thunder was the Sequel to Gates of Thunder and that also required the Super CD System Card to run.

Pretty disappointing they left out Legendary Axe, Bonk's Adventure and Devil's Crush. Keith Courage in Alpha Zones should have also been included. While not the best game, it was packed with the console at release and looked fantastic for it's time.

mixing na with jp roms on the western variation of the console is lazy and confusing. leave it up to konami to fail you yet again. couldn't even include bonk 1? what? why? it is a hudson property (which they own) and would not cost them a single penny in licensing. at the least they could have made this special by translating the tg-16 port of snatcher for the first time in english. i would consider picking one up for that game alone. i have read that the tg-16 port is the best version of the game, but it was never translated -- not even a fan translation exists for this port which is very sad. for christ sakes, konami! how hard would it be to translate a 25 year old game?

@Xristophoros: Many of the Japanese versions were better, but I wish they released some of the games many of us imported into the US because they never released them here.

Bonk 1 is there, but it’s the Japanese version.

You could be right and they’re just throwing an emulator on a box and bundling ROMs they found online.

Hopefully they use the PCEngine emulator as that would make the experience top notch and eventually allow for potential hacking and changing of the ROMs.

@sladakrobot: Since the Super Grafx was basically just a tweaked PC Engine, and there would never be enough nostalgia for it to justify its own mini console, Konami probably just figured no one would mind their throwing it — and the SG Ghouls n Ghosts, too — onto the TG mini.
