True Detective Renewed For Season 5 With Issa López Returning

True Detective has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO with Issa López, the creator of Night Country, returning as showrunner under her new overall deal with HBO. With Season 4, López took creative control of the franchise over from creator Nic Pizzolatto, who was behind the first three seasons.

HBO stated that Night Country is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million viewers. This season's story focused on detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigating the disappearance of eight men working at a remote Arctic research station in Alaska.

"Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO's creative spirit," said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming via press release. "She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali's impeccable performances, she's made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family."

López was called up to take over the mystery anthology series after Pizzolatto's overall deal with HBO expired. Pizzolatto opted to move to Disney and even landed on Marvel's Blade for a script overhaul. However, he left shortly after. HBO retains ownership of the series with Pizzolatto remaining on board as an executive producer'
