PopTop Software and Gathering of Developers have released new information about the character types that will be featured in their upcoming strategy game, Tropico. The game will give players control of a small island in the Caribbean, and they must manage the various military, economic, political, and social aspects of the island in order to build it into a thriving nation.

Tropico will include more than 500 island inhabitants and more than 45 character types, including farmers, factory workers, doctors, bankers, soldiers, and priests. The variety of character types makes it difficult to keep the citizens happy because each type has different wishes. For instance, farmers just want adequate food and housing, while the more wealthy citizens of the island want a prosperous business climate, security from crime, and entertainment. Members of the military want prestige and strong national security, and the clergy wants more spirituality.

In addition, there are different consequences of displeasing each group. Unhappy members of the social elite can hurt productivity and the player's rating with the United States, while unhappy members of the military and peasant classes may stage an armed revolt. As an added element to consider, there are tensions between the various social classes. Peasant classes resent the rich, and the military is suspicious of the peasants.

Each character has a unique personality that determines its attitudes and actions. This personality is made up of several factors, including educational level, age, gender, intelligence, and nationality. A character's educational level will affect what jobs he or she can hold, which in turn affects his or her income. Age will affect the likelihood of citizens to revolt, and gender will determine the tendency of a citizen to go drinking at bars or take time off from work to raise a family. More intelligent citizens will tend to be more successful and more likely to have a better education. Nationality will help determine a citizen's political slant.
