MicroProse gives Top Gun another chance.

When released, not many were impressed with Top Gun: Fire at Will, an action-oriented flight simulation, partially based on the popular movie Top Gun, published by Spectrum Holobyte (now MicroProse Ltd.).

Surprisingly enough, MicroProse has decided to make a sequel of sorts to be developed by Zipper Interactive (who is also designing Mechwarrior 3 for MicroProse).

Top Gun: Hornet's Nest will feature the F/A-18 Hornet (rather than the F-14 Tomcat), will still be action-oriented, and will still place you as Maverick (also known as Tom Cruise in the movie), battling in over 30 scenarios in three campaigns, with a mix of air- and ground-attack missions. Eight players will be able to battle on a LAN or on the Internet.

According to Tom Nichols, senior director of product marketing at MicroProse, Top Gun: Fire at Will, sold over 375,000 copies. "We hope the exciting combination of leading-edge technology, one of the best dogfighting films ever made, and an easy-to-play game design will, once again, result in a game that will appeal to the masses," said Nichols in a statement.

"Our goal in developing Top Gun: Hornet's Nest is to provide the player with incredibly intense action and realism while offering a user-friendly design," said Jim Bosler, president and executive producer at Zipper Interactive. "We want players to jump right into the heat of battle from the start, immediately taking out the enemy."
