Top 10 Best-Selling Games Of 2017 Revealed In The US

Here's which games sold the best during December 2017 and the full year.

The NPD Group today released its much-anticipated reports covering December 2017 and the full-year 2017 for video game sales--hardware and software-- in the United States. Starting with game sales, Call of Duty: WWII was the best-selling game of the year. NBA 2K18, Destiny 2 (PC sales not included), Madden NFL 18, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (digital sales not included) rounded out the top five. You can see the full Top 10 list below.

For December 2017 alone, Call of Duty: WWII led the way as the best-selling title of the month, followed by Star Wars: Battlefront II, Super Mario Odyssey, NBA 2K18, and Mario Kart 8 in that order. Notably, PUBG also made it into the chart, landing at No. 7. December 2017 marked the eighth year running that a Call of Duty game was No. 1 in December.

For December alone, total spending covering games, hardware, and accessories rose 10 percent to $3.3 billion. For the full year, total spending across all sectors reached $14.6 billion, representing an 11 percent increase compared to the year prior.

Game sales specifically in December amounted to $1.3 billion, up 1 percent, while full-year spending on games rose 4 percent to $6.7 billion. In terms of the total number of packaged video games sold at retail this year, this figure rose from 271 packaged releases in 2016 to 314 in 2017; this represents a 16 percent increase.

The genre that showed the greatest growth of all major genres in 2017 was Racing, which saw sales of its titles jump by 68 percent compared to 2016. The Shooter category, however, drove the most revenue, which makes sense with Call of Duty and Battlefront II on top of the charts.

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch sold the most units in December, but the PlayStation 4 sold the most for all of 2017. In December, spending on hardware rose 27 percent to $1.3 billion, and for the full year, total spend on hardware jumped by an impressive 28 percent, to $4.7 billion.

The NPD Group noted that the PS4 and Xbox One, combined, are on a "record-setting [sales] pace." This is notable given that, before they launched, some questioned if traditional video game consoles were still viable. Clearly, they are.

"Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent," the NPD Group said.

And as Nintendo announced already, the Nintendo Switch sold more consoles in the US over its first 10 months than any platform from any other company in history. December was a strong month for the 3DS, too, reaching the highest since December 2014.

Finally, the Accessories category saw flat sales for December 2017 of $735 million compared to the same month a year ago. For the full year, Accessories sales rose 2 percent to $3.2 billion. For December 2017 and the full year, Sony's black DualShock 4 controller was the top-selling accessory.

@fomalhaut2: I bought BattleFront II, because at the end of the day, what choice was there if you wanted a new Star Wars game? Sure, I could have bought the 13 year old version on Steam, but reading the Steam forums, that game has issues right now too ...and it's not aged that well. Battlefront II has MAJOR problems. The progression system is horrid, the balance is screwed, I'm pretty sure they've cancelled the future content, and I had to roll my GPU drivers back to an outdated version just to keep the game from crashing. But it's not like I'm swimming in choices for quality Star Wars games.

@fomalhaut2: It's because the internet is a giant echo chamber that makes angry people think their opinions are far more widespread than they actually are.

Happy for the Nintendo Switch on an amazing first year for its availabilty. PS4 still pulling stong, of course, and X-Box One is still somehow pulling profits. I am glad to see the video game industry still has such a wide fanbase that keep the video game community and the future of our hobby going strong in the year 2018!! I can only hope that Sony does better and releases some bigger, more impactful games in 2018 than 2017!!

The list confirms how many people missed out on good games in 2017.

Glad to see Nintendo has 3 games in the Top 10 of the year. Also, happy to see GTA V is doing so well after 4+ years from release. I don't think many games have done that? Maybe WoW because it's on going? Not sure...

So games that received massive negative press/backlash from gamers, i.e. CoD: WWII (with its infamous Normandy lootboxes), NBA 2K18 (with its infamous player progression microtransactions), Destiny 2 (with it's infamous pay2win and one use cosmetic lootboxes) and Star Wars Battlefront 2 (with its infamous pay2win lootbox player progression system) still all make the top 10. Frankly, given that people apparently just love being gouged and exploited by publishers, I'm surprised Shadow of War isn't on this list also. So the big take-home message for EA/Activision/Blizzard is that they can do anything they like and people will still buy it regardless. We can all expect more of the same (or worse) this year then. Nice.

@mdinger: What I take from this is that the majority of people just don't know until they play the game. They go to a store and pick up what seems to be a cool game. They watch advertisements and that's it. Also a lot of parents buying their kids a game for Christmas but they themselves don't play games so they are not aware of it until it comes up on the news.

I haven't bought any of these games as I don't support the practices these guys are doing.
The positive thing around these year issues at least is that it got mainstream media and politicians attention.

But we also know that video games are a popular target for whatever evil there is in the world.
Perhaps the pressure at least will make publishers less likely to use casino like tactics in game. That is if they don't want to risk market regulation.

There is another thing to consider. Usually public backlash is not felt in the current game sales but rather in the next sequel.

That is what happened with Assassins Creed Unity where the sequel Syndicate didn't sell as well as most other AC games.

What I do think is that microtransactions is now a hot topic. And although game sales don't reflect that yet, developers may find themselves in hot water if they continue to implement aggressive casino like monetization systems into games.

@mdinger: I think the take home point for angry gamers on the internet is, 'Maybe things aren't actually as terrible as you keep saying they are.' : p

@mdinger: Because the most vocal backlash/negative comments on the internet comes from the people that bought the games, so yes, the sales will be up there in the chart

@mdinger: Yes those Games got a bit of backlash however, it is usually the negative commenters that have the loudest and most prominent voice .. a lot of people that enjoyed those Games just went and played them and ignored what was being said online! I like Battlefront 2 .. I haven't purchased a single lootbox and to be fair I didn't really post loads of positivity about the game .. because I was just playing it! And I don't think anyone can be surprised that Call of Duty WW2 did well .. I haven't played COD in years but its clear to see that it has a massive following! Loving PUBG .. doing great for a Game Preview title!

I think that should be Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Somewhat misleading and pointless list. Pretty much, no digital sales included, which removes an entire platform to begin with.

@UltimateBastard: The only categories where they excluded digital sales are 3DS and Switch, and for the PC just for Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Destiny 2.

@livedreamplay: I know reading is hard, but you are mistaken. Is the fact that PUBG isn't even in the top 10 best selling games of 17 not give it away, considering it could very well be number 1.

@UltimateBastard: If you're a moron, at least don't try to offend others. PUBG was early access almost the entire year, it wasn't fully released until late December, that's why it's not on the list.

@livedreamplay: please read the data again. Pubg is listed in top selling games in December as #7 I believe, because of Xbox sales (digital sales obviously) but is also in early access, and still in early access on that system. And that was only one of many games I was talking about, there are a ton more here if you can read. And I'm not the moron mate, you are, as I said, reading is hard?. Please review the data properly, I can not be arsed explaining it to you in my next post, which I'm undoubtly going to have to.

@UltimateBastard: It literally specifies all the items that don't have digital sales included, yet you tell me that "reading is hard"? You're taking stupidity to a whole new level lmao.

It's good that you won't bother answering, you'll probably just make an even bigger fool of yourself...

@livedreamplay: mate, you see all those ^ symbols beside the names of games. Those are excluded pc digital sales, and they consist of a hell of a lot more than just battlefront and destiny. You also see that list of best selling games of 2017, notice that pubg isn't on it, yet you say that's because it was early access, yet it's still in early access on Xbox but is included in both Xbox sales and December sales. You dont find that odd?

So I say again, I know it's hard for someone like yourself with limited intelligence to work this shit out, but we'll get there.

@UltimateBastard: Lmao I told you to not respond cause you're going to make an even bigger fool of yourself...

The ^ games are the only ones that don't have digital sales, respectively the * games don't have PC digital sales. The rest are all there. I gave star wars and destiny as examples because those were the ones in the yearly sales, not in the December sales. And PUBG is obviously not there because of early access, they probably just summed up the sales from the two weeks of December on the One.

Now that you've made an even bigger fool of yourself, what's next?

@livedreamplay: PUBG, not in the 2017 best selling games, that is all!

Actually that isn't all, obviously there is no talking to a brain dead moron who can't interpret simple data, now you're saying shit like "probably", you know ehat assupmtion is? The mother of all **** ups.

But as I said before, reading is hard?

I told you to stop making yourself look even dumber. I'm amused by your incapabilities, don't get me wrong, but that's enough pathetic for one day....
