Tomb Raider Movie Tells Origin Story, Described as "Modern Action" Film

New details have come to light about the upcoming Tomb Raider movie. Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) tells IGN that the film, similar to the 2013 game from Crystal Dynamics, will be an origin story.

Uthaug lauded the 2013 game and said his movie will try to do something similar, presenting Croft as a "real human being."

"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," he said. "I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."

Uthaug also said he has been a fan of the Tomb Raider franchise since the beginning. "I've always been a fan of strong female characters," he went on to say. "And I think I've had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that's something I thought was interesting."

Also in the interview, Uthaug said he hopes the Tomb Raider movie will feel like a "modern action movie."

Specific story points are being kept under wraps for now. Transformers 5 writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet is signed on to write the screenplay. The project is a collaboration between four companies--GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix.

The previous two Tomb Raider films--2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life--starred Angelina Jolie as the iconic British archaeologist. The first movie remains the highest grossing video game adaptation ever in the US, but the disappointing box office for The Cradle of Life, combined with Jolie's reluctance to revisit the character, meant that a third film never materialized.
