Titanfall dev doesn't know--and doesn't care--if the game is making a profit

"I don't know if it's making a profit...I don't really care," producer Drew McCoy says, adding that success to him is working on a game that he enjoys playing.

Titanfall producer Drew McCoy does not know--and does not care--if his new game is making a profit because he's already happy that he got to make a game that he enjoys. That's what success means to him, McCoy told GameSpot during an interview at PAX East last weekend.

"I don't know if it's making a profit, I don't know if it's meeting sales expectations. I don't really care," McCoy said. "I care that I worked on a game that I can sit down and enjoy playing. The fact that people enjoy it and it has made enough that we [get to] continue supporting it as a studio, that's to me a success. We make games because we love them and we want other people to play them with us."

GameSpot sources indicate that Titanfall has indeed sold quite well, and strong sales have led publisher Electronic Arts to secure the rights for Titanfall 2.

We also quizzed McCoy about whether or not he thinks Titanfall has disrupted the status quo in the FPS market--namely, juggernaut franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield. He wasn't in a position to say if Titanfall had indeed affected those major franchises, instead saying that he hopes the game has shown other developers that they should branch out and try new things instead of following a formula.

"We make games because we love them and we want other people to play them with us" -- Titanfall producer Drew McCoy

"I don't know if we've disrupted it. People are still going to make the cinematic 5-6 hour single-player, they're going to make the multiplayer, and maybe co-op that sandwiches in between," McCoy said. "They're still going to throw 600 people at it, and do production values for production values' sake. But what I hope it's done is opened up designers to trying new things."

"There's been some really colossal failures...there's been games that looked at what's popular and go 'oh, if we have this, people will buy our game.' And then it just completely fails, because they missed the reason as to why that game was good and they didn't try anything new," he added. "So I hope what Titanfall does, as a gamer and as someone who wants to see the industry get better and make cooler stuff, is try new things and not just try and copy what's good."

Titanfall launched March 11 for Xbox One and PC, and came to Xbox 360 just last week. We'll find out how well it sold--and how effective it was at selling Xbox Ones--tomorrow evening when the NPD Group releases sales information for the month of March. Stay tuned.

While i got bored with Titanfall in the first month and do not like it hardly at all now, I greatly respect the Dev's attitude. Bravo.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There's a philosophy behind this, that designers from other industry employ. "don't make a product that you think others will enjoy. intead make a product that YOU enjoy. Then others will automatically enjoy it, if you made it well."

He didn't say he doesn't care if it's making a profit. He said he doesn't care if it's meeting projections. Those are completely different things. Even in the article, they quote him as saying: "it has made enough that we [get to] continue supporting it as a studio, that's to me a success." That's him addressing profit. He does care if it's profiting. What kind of amateur hour reporting is this?

Maybe yeah he doesn't care to some degree, but I would argue it is basically impossible not to care at all. Money rules the world, that's the way it is. Money is what keeps you alive. At the end of the day his job is to crank out something great that will make said money. If you are in a business to produce something that makes the big bucks and don't deliver resulting in your studio being in the hole guess who is at stake to take a hit or even lose a job? That's his well being, and bread and butter. Him screaming "I don't care" just actually sounds like him trying to rally some sort of support in hopes of seeming different. Maybe "new age" a "man of the people/gamers" whatever dude. If that's the case let your work speak for you, don't do so for your work through and through.

Wow, what a statement to make as a developer! Ask 38 Studios Curt Schilling if that worked for him, his employees, and family's along with the whole state of Rhode Island! Truly laughable!

Of course this suggests that he doesn't want to answer the question because it's not making a profit!

And they don't want to make a SP side to the game to actually make it maybe worth the $60 price tag and attract more sales!

That's a neat thought and all...until the paychecks stop rolling in. That's generally when people start to care whether their work produces a profit. It's just the reality we live in.

Well, I expect the sales figures to be decent for the game, since there was a massive advertising budget spent on it by Microsoft - I mean, they threw everything at this game at launch, comparable to Gears of War.

Any game that receives that kind of marketing might is bound to succeed, regardless if the game is actually any good.

That's why I loved this game. It was an ok game to play, but it was obvious that it wasn't made for the profit. I honestly think the only reason it was hyped up passed it's potential was because Microsoft needed it to get people to buy an Xbox One.

I'd care if it was making a profit. It's his job. I'd care a great ****ing deal. Just because you're passionate about game development doesn't mean you aren't allowed to care about money.

<< LINK REMOVED >> mehhh not really. Once you focus too much on sales then developers just play it safe and clone everything thats been done before. Thats why so many developers wish to stay private.

But im sure he is just BSing. This game doesnt exactly scream original.

Got to level 50, reset my stats, bored now... Why is it fun to reset my game? Also wheres the challenge, theres zero teamwork, everyone gets points just for playing, theres NO stats on wins and losses, no one cares, its mindless shooting. Why not rank up with wins and rank down with losses....

It's a lot of marketing bullshit, that and titanfall has very little actual inovation. Everything looks revolutionary when you see how CoD and BF don't chance at all year after year, but all in all, it's CoD with mechs and parkour from Brink.

The dev doesn't care if the game he helped create is profitable? That comment seems a bit disingenuous. Titanfall has obviously been profitable. To what degree, we likely won't know for some time -if ever.

I highly doubt this 50-Million($)-Behemoth(production costs alone) was profitable for Microsoft so far.

Given the fact, they have probably cleared another 50 Million to market it, a game like this has to sell around 5 Million copies, in order to be truly profitable - or draw ALOT hardware sales or interest for spending money on additional content.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I doubt Titanfall is very profitable. It's being bundled in with Xbox One and it's all but dead on PC. Add in the fact that MS paid EA a ton to make it exclusive and you're probably looking at a loss. The 360 port may help the situation but that remains to be seen.

MS was hoping that Titanfall would help sell Xbox Ones and were hoping on breaking even with the game, but it hasn't done that. PS4 continues to outsell the Xbox One.

I believe that he knows the game's doing very well, and its making a profit, that's why he doesn't care :P Developers will not make a game they themselves wouldn't enjoy. Keeping a studio afloat means actually checking if you're making a profit with what you do.......

I can absolutely guarantee you one thing for sure - he will care about profits if he finds out the game didn't make a profit. If he wants "innovation" to disrupt the FPS market, the game had better be profitable - or developers are going to look and say "see, innovation doesn't sell."

He's a developer, not a publisher, so of course he doesn't give two shits about profits. He cares about doing his job, which is creating awesome games. Programmers, engineers, scientists, doctors, etc. don't do their jobs to make a profit, they do it because they love it. Businessmen care about profits.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Citizen Kane actually bombed at the theaters when it was released. It wasn't until many years later that it was seen for the masterpiece it actually is. Titanfall, on the other hand, has been viewed as a great game since long before it even launched. It's also sold very well from the start. It was the top selling game of March after all.

That's fair enough. When your job is to make good games and everyone says that your game is good, I don't think I would care about it making a profit either. The next time someone wants a good game made, you'll be on their list, and they'll be prepared to pay you good money regardless of how many copies it sold.

-EDIT- That thing about him only measuring it by how much he personally likes it is BS though, he shouldn't have said that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Unfortunately a game can be good and still not sell. If a developer has any hope of getting the funding to create another game their previous one at least needed to be profitable. There are some exceptions to this of course but not many. I would believe it if he said that profit wasn't what he was most concerned with but to say he doesn't care if it's profitable seems more than a bit disingenuous imo. Regardless, Titanfall has obviously been profitable so he can get away with saying things like that to a certain degree.
