Three Years Later, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Still Seeing 12 Million Players Per Month

That's more than double the combined player base of Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline.

Nearly three years after its release in November 2012, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops II continues to remain incredibly popular. Activision has announced that, for the past three months, the game averaged 12 million monthly active users. According to Activision, that's an "unprecedented level for a game that is three years old and only available on old-generation consoles."

No Caption Provided

By comparison, Electronic Arts recently announced that the combined player base for Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline over the past three months was 6 million players, just half of Black Ops II's.

With more than 100,000 votes, Black Ops II is the most-requested title overall for Xbox One backwards compatibility on the Xbox Feedback site. However, Microsoft hasn't yet announced if the game will indeed be added to the lineup. The initial list of supported titles is coming on November 9.

Looking ahead to Black Ops III, which arrives on November 6, Activision said "momentum ahead of launch has been strong," citing the continued engagement with Black Ops II as one example.

In other recent Black Ops III news, Treyarch has announced mod tools for the PC edition and explained why the last-generation versions do not have a single-player campaign.

I miss Black Ops 2! I still play it, but it was really the first COD i truly got into. I played the previous but mostly for campaign and the occasional multiplayer match.

So many good memories and meeting some cool friendS

This just surprises me. For me, BOII was the worst of the series.

@Shantmaster_K: Just the opposite for me. I have a fave for each developer in the cycle. BO2 is the best from 3arch, and MW2 is the best from IW. COD4 is the standard that got us all hooked.

Then you look at CS:GO having 500k players on daily.... Trying to compare other games to COD is silly. I don't think they run the numbers correctly being on PC Steam shows 2-4k players daily while Consoles it's 20k or so, so 12 million? yeah no.

I still play BO2 but prefer COD MW3 - I found the last few B4 and AW to be just steaming piles. They need to slow the game down, it is too much like Unreal, Halo, and spec ops, and counter strike. ME and my friends that get together every week since the first halo LAN parties, greatly prefer the more strategic and realistic Modern Warfare games. We like 2 and 3 the best. Used to be the less you died was the most important thing, now they reward 16k and 15d, just as much as someone 15k and 1d.

It has become all twitch based with very little need for team work, strategy, and creativity. Spawn, kill, die, spawn, kill, die. That is what made the Modern Warfare such a breath of fresh air from the jumping jack Halo, wall sliding Gears, and unreal/counter strike. Covering each other, setting down traps, holding areas, covering alleyways. When a claymore mine is the weakest thing you can choose, and jetpacks are more popular then you know things have went to hell. The game rewards rage quitters and across the map random grenade tosses.

I think this is what is making them stale and selling less each year. I would love to see activision, treyarch, etc get another Modern Warfare out there.

@cejay0813: Goddamnit, it is crap. Battlefield 4 and Hardline are way superior to any Call of Duty game in online multiplayer.

I liked the first few Call of Duty's, but cmon guys there are better multiplayer games, Battlefield being one of them.

@Fastnova00007: Lol you gave zero reasons why you think it's crap. I understand that in your opinion the BF games are better and to each his own but I think the two games set out to do two different things. When I want more fast pace and varied action I go with COD. When I prefer to play at a slower pace I go with BF (although Hardline is absolutely no different from any COD game out there, imo, so it's funny you mentioned it).

Also its the most requested 360 game people want in the backwards compatible program on Xbox One. Activision won't let that happen though. That would hurt the sales of the crap Black Ops 3 that releases today! I'll be playing Warzone on Halo 5 instead.

Whole lotta dudebros out there. (But in all seriousness, BO2 is the second best CoD under 4, which is unplayable thanks to modders and the like nowadays.)

I would LOVE for the call of duty franchise to get a complete remaster and overhall for current gen in one big collectors edition. That would be an epic playthrough. The earlier titles were great especially 2 & 3.

It's probably because it was the last decent CoD on 360/PS3. I know many of my friends went back to playing it less than a month after Ghosts came out and I doubt they bought AW.

While I support healthy competition, it's kinda nice to see Activision still whooping EA in the shooter department after seeing how they almost completely destroyed the Battlefield franchise because they wanted to "take CoD's spot"

Part of the reason people are still playing BO2 is because it doesn't involve special abilities. I have played COD:MW through COD:AW online. But, I haven't played AW nearly as much as any of those previous titles (hours compared to days) because of the abilities. It is a good game and I have fun with it, but I just don't really care for the abilities.

@harshfence: So because you don't like a particular feature most others don't as well? That's quite the scientific approach you have there.

@mikemurphy80: You are right. I should have started my statement with "I believe" to indicate it is my opinion. Most of my friends that play COD feel the same way. But, that is not to say that the majority of people agree with me. There was no implication of that in my statement. Since I know others that feel the same way that I do, my statement that "part of the reason" people still play BO2 is accurate.

But, like I said, I think it is a good game and I play it from time to time. It is just not my preference.

@mikemurphy80: From talking to lots of people who play CoD, i'd say he's pretty accurate. Most players i've talked to just like the regular old CoD gameplay. You'd be amazed how many people say AW is "too much like Halo". It's hilarious.

Another big thing is BO2 was the last one to have the proper zombies mode. Tons of people play just that mode.

@dominoodle: People moan about CoD being the same thing year after year and when they try and mix it up a bit people still moan. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. (Admittedly it's probably different groups of people doing the moaning in each scenario).

Everybody says how they want a COD set in the past again. Question is will they like a slow paced game again. After playing these frenetic games.

It's NOT up to Microsoft whether or not it's added to backwards compatibility -- it's up to Activision.

...and there's ZERO incentive for them to do so. They live & die on sales of annual franchises, so they'd love nothing more than to see that 12M monthly players be forced to upgrade.

Game's pretty RIP on Steam alongside all the other COD games, or full-priced multiplayer-focused FPS in general (e.g. Evolve) for that matter.

These AAAs can't compete against free titles and vastly cheaper multiplayer indies.
