THQ and Mattel join forces

THQ secures the rights to publish Mattel Interactive titles.

THQ announced today that it has secured the exclusive rights to publish Mattel Interactive software titles based on the Hot Wheels and Matchbox properties through 2005. The agreement spans all platforms including ones from Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft. The agreement includes all previous software releases by Mattel Interactive under the previously stated brands.

"Teaming up with Mattel Wheels is a key part of our overall business strategy for several reasons,'' stated Brian Farrell, president and CEO, THQ. "The Hot Wheels and Matchbox properties are two of Mattel's strongest boy brands and provide a wealth of great content for games. These franchises will not only expand our clear leadership position in the kids category, but it will also solidify our presence in the PC business.''

Under the agreement, THQ will publish Hot Wheels Hybrid Racing for the PlayStation and Matchbox Emergency Patrol for the Game Boy Color in 2001. In addition, THQ will publish four Hot Wheels and Matchbox titles for the PC.

"THQ's leadership position in the interactive entertainment business, and the kids category in particular, makes them the ideal interactive partner for our biggest boys properties,'' stated Matt Bousquette, president, boys/entertainment, Mattel. "Their proven development expertise will ensure that the Hot Wheels and Matchbox brands translate into fun, authentic gameplay experiences on the hottest game systems."
