Thor 5: Chris Hemsworth Doesn't Want To Overstay His Welcome As Thor, Discusses Future

Chris Hemsworth has commented on his future as Thor in the MCU, saying he doesn't know what's next for the character for a potential Thor 5. And although he would come back if that's what fans want to see, he wants to make sure any additional appearance is creatively justified.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hemsworth said he is "always" having conversations about what's next for Thor, but nothing official has been locked down as of yet.

What Hemsworth does know is that he has enjoyed being able to "reinvent" his Thor a few times already and would jump at the chance to do it again with the right script.

"I don't want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character," he said. "If an audience wants to see it, and if there's something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I've loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don't have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable."

With his commentary around reinventing Thor, Hemsworth is likely referring to the shift from Thor: The Dark World to Thor: Ragnarok. As part of this shift, Thor became a more humorous character thanks in part to director Taika Waititi's influence.

Before this, Hemsworth spoke about how he probably had "too much fun" making Thor: Love and Thunder, so much so that looking back on the movie now makes him "cringe."

Hemsworth has appeared in four solo Thor movies, which is the most for any MCU character, and this is in addition to his appearances as Thor in the Avengers movies.

Hemsworth nearly didn't even play Thor, as he bungled his audition. As he tells it, Hemsworth's brother, Liam Hemsworth, was nearly cast in the role.

In 2021, Chris Hemsworth said he was observing that there might be "waning enthusiasm" from fans about him coming back to play Thor again. He's not the only Marvel star who has talked about potentially hanging it up. Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, recently said he was thinking about walking away and letting someone else play Spider-Man.
