The Witcher 2: Then and Now

The Witcher 2 is fantastically easy on the eyes. See how far the graphics have come since the original.

No Caption Provided

The Witcher has come a long way. Originally released in 2007, the game was powered by BioWare's Aurora engine, the same used in the popular role-playing game Neverwinter Nights. For the sequel, CD Projekt Red opted to build the game with an engine of its own design, Red, and the results are spectacular. For a genre that rarely pushes graphics, The Witcher 2 features numerous options that really crank up the visual fidelity: ambient occlusion, dynamic lighting, depth of field effects, and a little something that’s unique to The Witcher 2, Ubersampling. Ubersampling basically takes antialiasing, the effect that removes jagged edges, to a whole new level.

Geralt

Characters and faces appear much more believable in the sequel. The original game didn't look bad at the time, but The Witcher 2 has quite a bit more technology behind it. Looking at the main character's appearance in The Witcher 2, we noted that his clothing reacts to lighting in a detailed manner, and you can see numerous shadows across it. The buttons shine brightly, and the leather takes on a glossed look when illuminated. By comparison, in the original, his clothing looked just as dull when under full sunlight. His hair also flows much more easily in the sequel, and the movement is far from the wooden animation of the original.

The Witcher The Witcher 2

Indoor Environments

Indoor scenes look similar when still, and that's largely due to the sunlight coming from windows, but in motion, the game behaves very differently. Lighting barely affected environments in the original, and the number of lighting errors you might find was tremendous in certain parts of the game. Looking around a castle, you see point lights emanating from areas that are in different rooms entirely. The Witcher 2 also gets a large boost in the variety and quality of its textures.

Outdoor Environments

When we wander outside, the sequel really shines. CD Projekt did a spectacular job giving the landscape a lifelike feel. The original feels almost dead by comparison. Lighting and various postprocessing effects have a great deal to do with this change. When the game is in motion, depth of field and blur effects definitely give the game a much more polished look.

The Witcher 2 Settings

The Witcher 2 is a demanding game if you crank everything up. Only the most modern and powerful of rigs can run Ultra spec without hiccups. But most users can get close simply by disabling the Ubersampling setting. Ubersampling ups the visuals by applying very high-quality antialiasing to everything on the screen, but the performance hit is tremendous, pulling even a GeForce GTX 480 SLI setup down into the mud at times. Flipping between the various settings, you might want to try to get the game to run on high settings. Dropping down to medium causes you to lose lots of eye candy--light shafts, shadow quality, motion blur, and distant rendering. One thing is for sure, even at the lowest settings, the game never looks bad. The more demanding settings simply make it look better.

Low Medium High Ultra w/o Ubersampling Ultra

Low Medium High Ultra w/o Ubersampling Ultra

Low Medium High Ultra w/o Ubersampling Ultra

Low Medium High Ultra w/o Ubersampling Ultra

Low Medium High Ultra w/o Ubersampling Ultra

With The Witcher 2 receiving such rave reviews, we wouldn't be surprised if a sequel were planned. We can't wait to see how CD Projekt ups the ante on the visuals in a few years' time.

Freaking love this game. Im running a hell of a gaming rig w 2 560ti's in sli. So running this game totally maxed out is awesome. The graphics keep getting better and better every new location. Thank you Atari for letting the designers build this game pc exclusive, so they can utilize the more powerful hardware rather than a multiplatform game that looks like fuzzy $hit so It can run on 360,pc,ps3.

@siamo yeah, im just waiting for consoles to have the ability to handle games like this and bf3 at full graphic quality, instead of having to lower things down. since my computer is a pile of sheep junk on a stick, i have to stick with console gaming, and that really sucks cause on PC, you get mods, awesome visuals, and a keyboard. I LUV KEYBOARDS! :)

@Aryanith I actually used the Isometric camera so the feel was quite different for me at first. Anyway, I love both games - the best RPGs I've ever played. In the article above they really try hard to praise the new graphics in The Witcher 2 but i think they're being too hard on the graphics from the first game - it was looking damn good back in 2007.

the game definitely looks amazing..i'm not even sure that dx 10-11 could improve too much. my only woe is that i loved the over-the-shoulder view centered slightly on the left, it took me more into the game..and also the hud was more badass and stylish..but it's just me whining, this game rocks!

@charlieboomboom Judging by your name i'm guessing... you just crapped your pants? That's what you have to say afterwords? I'm just trying to figure out what would make someone say some BS like that. BTW Those screens are exactly how the game looks when you buy it. Yes it looks that good.

And this game is DX9, not using DX11 at all. Proof that hard work improves quality without the need for latest technologies.

CD Projekt really did a great job on this game... a few problems with the release version (like no invert mouse option... had to google to find a way to invert it using the user.ini) but in comparison to other rpgs its really good... the first time i configured it i didnt know what that uber sampling option was so i did what i always do, set all to max :) bummer it was at 10-15 fps, then i looked uber sampling up, disabled it and now it runs smooth 30-40 fps with everything but US enabeled on a Pentium Core2Duo E8400@ 3GHz, 4 GB DDR2-800 RAM and a BFG GeForce GTX 280 OC2 @ 694 MHz... the thing that amazed me was an interview where they said, that they actually thought about where to put trees, where a tree could really grow that large and all that... and the dwarven city is another great detail how the buildings were part of the mountain... definately worth playing!

I still can't get over the fact that Witcher 1 had dogs... but Witcher 2 doesn't. Sure you can hear them but there aren't any of them roaming the streets. There I was thinking I could probably get some easy dog tallow from those mutts but no, there weren't any.

people who dont see much difference is because the person A)complete noob at making comparisons between the 2 texture wise. B)Click next page and see if you dont see any difference. This game blows graphically crysis 2 out the water and its a rpg which is sad since rpgs arent supposed to be graphics focused but this game is and is also gameplay focused which makes it a heavy contender for GOTY

What's the point? I don't see a major difference, maybe because I chose my games based on the amount of fun I can have with them. If I want realistic graphics, I look out the window... ;)

@ TheSterls I'm not here to argue that The Witcher EE (I didn't play the first version) is one of today's best looking games... But it did look pretty good for an RPG at the time and of course it offers higher resolutions, AA, and FPS than most console games. (Just the nature of PC games.)

This and Battlefield 3 this year.. PC getting some love. To bad Crysis 2 couldn't do the same... not that I didn't like the game but it was a step back. Just a side note-I have been hearing a lot of complaing about the combat concerning the Witcher 2.. that its to hard blah blah.. If you upgrade your Quen Sign your good to go. Any newb could beat the game with that spell. Its my game of the year so far.. First game in a long time where I can't wait to turn on my PC to play it. Console fanboys are missing out.. hahahahahahaha lol jk.. I have consoles too.

Looks like whoever wrote this is using an nVidia card and possibly with SLI enabled. The coronas being seen through walls with The Witcher 1 is a known problem and can easily be fixed with a profile tweak. With the new 275.27 drivers you can set SLI for "The Witcher" profile to AFR2. With previous drivers, you can simply remove the SLI compatability bits in the profile through nVidia Inspector. nVidia should have fixed it themselves by now, but they haven't.

Yeah, Witcher 2 is one serious lovely-looking game (although switching on the uber-sampling at Ultra settings turns my PC to treacle). But its beauty would mean nothing if it wasn't a seriously good game as well. Which luckily it is.

@jasonzilla11 It'll be scaled down. If you do a PC/Console comparison of pretty much any game coming out these days you'll notice things like foliage and other relatively insignificant elements of the game world are scaled back to compensate.
