After three seasons--and a few guest appearances in other Star Wars TV shows--the next chapter of The Mandalorian will unfold on the big screen. Disney has officially announced that a Mandalorian feature film adaptation is headed to movie theaters in the future, with production kicking off later this year.

Jon Favreau will direct the film and it is officially titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. Favreau will also be a producer on the movie alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," Favreau said in a statement on the official Star Wars website. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Kennedy added that Favreau and Filoni are a "perfect fit" for this big-screen adaptation, as the two Star Wars creatives helped usher in the new age of the franchise with multiple TV series throughout the 2010s. Favreau was also instrumental in the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed the first Iron Man film that helped kickstart that shared universe of stories and sequels.

The Mandalorian and Grogu join a stacked slate of upcoming Star Wars projects. Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeed Obaid-Chinoy is directing a Star Wars film featuring Daisy Ridley back in the role of Rey Skywalker, Filoni is directing a movie set in a post-Return of the Jedi galaxy, Logan director James Mangold is developing a project focused on the dawn of the Jedi Knights, and Thor director Taika Waititi continues to work on his mystery Star Wars film.
