The Lost Vikings have a "good chance" of coming to Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm

The stars of Blizzard's puzzle/platformer from the '90s may be making their way to the upcoming action RTS Heroes of the Storm.

Today at Blizzcon 2013, Blizzard said that their action RTS Heroes of the Storm would have heroes and villains extending through the company’s entire back catalog. And Blizzard revealed that they're willing to reach back pretty far; one of the older properties they might be using is The Lost Vikings.

Blizzard game designer Dustin Browder said in an interview with GameSpot, “There’s a good chance for Lost Vikings. That’s one of the characters we’ve been really interested in doing. It’s a way we can do three characters and you’re controlling them and swapping back and forth. I think we’ve got some ideas that we might be able to make work, but we’re going to have to test it first to really see.”

The Lost Vikings starred in a series of side-scrolling puzzle/platforming games from the ‘90s across a variety of platforms, including SNES, PlayStation, Amiga, and Sega Mega Drive.

I too liked the Lost Vikings, however I wouldn't like to have them as playable characters. They only have 1 skill per Viking and rest they would have to invent. If that would be the case they would just lose their "lore" or whatever, they wouldn't feel the same at all.

Having 3 characters in 1 hero would make much more sense, being able to swap with say R skill to switch offensive, mobile and defensive stances. That would however just add some extra work for Blizzard to make custom skins, which wouldn't prove to be cost effective.

The only game Blizzard has ever made that I actually care about (Never got into Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, WoW). I'd love to see a proper new installment in the series someday.

I loved that game -- it was truly fun, challenging, and funny. I'd totally buy a sequel.

Oh, well, I suck at micro in DOTA games (due to different hotkey scheme vs something like Starcraft), so I guess I won't be playing my nostalgia characters. :(

But, glad to see them in the game.

Its' DotA , A tower defense game I think paying the same theme characters over and over again with one objective to kill the fountain would get old real fast.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Super Smash Bros, never got old. Nor has any MOBA game. Also there are many differences between Heroes of the Storm and other MOBAs like LOL and DOTA 2.

I remember that game fondly on my Amiga. It was around the same time I played Fury of the Furries. Another similar and fantastic game.

I wouldn't deny that Blizz can actually make an eye-candy out of those cinematic trailers. The problem is many of them completely make no common sense at all. Just take the Heart of the Swarm intro for an example. Who in the right mind would land a lone Viking to solo off an Ultralisk currently on rampage? And this one? Dropping a nuke onto a foe just a couple of feet away from you? These guys are seriously orbit high when they are doing these vids.

And back to the Heroes of the Storm thing. Blizz better make it free to play or else I can see that this one is going down even faster than you can say 'Titanic!'.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Trailers are meant to be high-octane, adrenaline-filled, over-the-top, action-packed showcases of the game that in no way represents the gameplay (especially in Blizzard's case.). Think of Blizzard as the "Apple" of games, they make some catchy attractive trailer, then give you a sub-par game. *cough* Diablo III *cough* ALL the wow expansions (well mabie not The Burning Crusade.) *cough* Starcraft II is actually good.

To be honest, I'd have been more surprised if they weren't going to be in the game. Blizzard only has so many properties, and a crossover MOBA is a great way to dust off some of the more obscure ones.

@Jaxith I get the feeling Blizzard are gonna have as hard a time filling the roster for this as Sony did for their All-Stars game.
And Sony have released as fair bit more than 3 expansions, 1 game and 1 third of game (2 thirds if Starcraft 2.2 is actually out) in the last 10 years.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> One can easily quadruple that if one was well versed in with the Warcraft story. This is a MOBA, all characters are worth using as long as they play different enough. DOTA has amassed around 100 characters and most of them are based on existing Warcraft personalities.

Either way, you've actually supported my claim rather than against just by naming all those in your post, as that number rivals the whole roster of Playstation All-Stars.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No, it wasn't. Your point was that Blizzard would have a hard time finding characters to fill their game like Sony's All Stars. But Blizzard will have an easy time filling rosters because a single franchise of theirs holds more characters than any of Sony's IPs put together.

If I were them I'd be thinking of ways to bring the lost vikings back in their own game instead.

Maybe as a 3D SP or co-op game with a bit more enemies and modified abilities but still with the puzzle solving.

Maybe as a pure sequel with singleplayer or co-op in 2D

or maybe just a HD remake of the wonderful first game.

They could even ignore the vikings themselves and make another IP out of the same concept because it was a wonderful concept with the 3 playable characters who had to work together with their vastly different personal abilities to solve problems of the platform kind.

For those who don't know:

The first had a shield that could be used to block projectiles or be used as a platform or used as a hanglider.

The second had the ability to jump and run and break (some) walls with his head.

The third had a sword for enemies and a bow (also for enemies) that could activate hard to reach buttons and other objects.

In combination it made for some interesting puzzles and platforming.

I thought Blizzard would only include rehash characters and textures from WC3 and SC2. According to the gameplay video.
