The season finale contained yet another Easter egg, and it was purposefully hidden from view.

The Season 1 finale of HBO's The Last of Us contained multiple Easter eggs, one of which was never actually shown on screen but the person behind it has now revealed the details. This story contains spoilers for The Last of Us.

Actress Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the video games, starred on the Season 1 finale as Ellie's mother, Anna. She appeared in a flashback sequence showing Ellie's traumatic birth and Anna's death, and now Johnson has revealed that the scene was hiding something.

In The Last of Us game, Ellie discovers a note from her mother in which she tells young Ellie that life is worth living and that she should find her purpose and fight for it. Johnson said she wrote out that note by hand and kept it in her pocket as she filmed her scenes as Anna.

"I wrote that letter out and just kept it in my pocket as kind of a reminder to myself of where this character came from and sort of the history of that," she told Deadline.

Johnson also spoke about passing the baton, so to speak, to Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the TV series. Johnson said it has been "such a joy" to watch Ramsey act because "she's so good."

"I feel like there's been so many scenes that have been elevated because of her capabilities and her talent." Johnson added that Ramsey's talent will help even more in Season 2 when things get "even darker and heavier."

As for other Easter eggs in the Season 1 finale, we learned that Laura Bailey--who plays Abby in The Last of Us Part II--was one of the physicians in the hospital room where Ellie was about to be operated on (and killed!) before Joel (Pedro Pascal) stormed in and murdered the surgeon.

Additionally, the giraffe scene includes the same baseball field Easter egg that a developer put into the game as a tribute to his wife.

The Last of Us will return for a second season, which will follow the events of The Last of Us Part II. Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann says a third season is coming as well, so fans have a lot more to look forward to.
