With Amy Hennig leaving Naughty Dog--and her role as director of the new Uncharted for PS4--earlier this year, The Last of Us co-directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann have stepped in to lead the PS4 debut of Uncharted.

Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells revealed the move in an interview with Game Informer. Asked about Straley and Druckmann helping during Uncharted's transition following Hennig's departure, Wells said, "It's not so much a transition period, actually. We've asked them to lead the project. They are excited as veterans of the Uncharted franchise to take the responsibility and they're doing great."

The two both worked on the first two Uncharted games; Wells notes that Straley was the art director on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and game director on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, while Druckmann helped write both games and worked as lead designer on Among Thieves. Perhaps as a result of that experience, the transition from Hennig has gone smoothly.

"It was not a difficult transition at all," Wells said. "Everybody just sort of accepted that as the new order of things and soldiered on. I mean we've been making enormous progress. If anything, things are accelerating instead of slowing down."

"We definitely have another project on the scale of Uncharted in very early pre-production stages." -- Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells

Fellow co-president Christophe Balestra admitted that with different people in the leadership roles, there will be some changes. "A little bit," he said when asked about there being a new spirit and priorities brought to the game. "They have to fall in love with the game they're making, right? They'll make the changes that they think are right. They're going to have to adjust what they've got and make it what they think is right for this game. There are some changes, obviously, that they will be making."

Wells and Balestra downplayed the series of departures Naughty Dog has seen this year in addition to Hennig, with Wells calling the moves "not significant at all." He also said Naughty Dog has never worked "on the 'auteur philosophy'" and reiterated that the games it makes are truly a team effort.

They also suggested that Straley and Druckmann being busy with Uncharted doesn't affect the studio's ability to continue working on another franchise, such as The Last of Us. "We definitely have another project on the scale of Uncharted in very early pre-production stages. We have the sizable team that it takes to get something like that off of the ground, but it's got a long runway in front of it," Wells said.

In addition to Uncharted for PS4, Naughty Dog has been working on a PS4 release of The Last of Us known as The Last of Us Remastered. It's also said it has two "brand-new experiences" in the work, one of which might be Uncharted.

It's rumored that gameplay from the new Uncharted will be on show at E3 next week. And while neither of the co-presidents offered an exact timetable for seeing more, Wells did offer a tease, saying, "We sure hope you're surprised by how amazing it looks! It's going to be an exciting story, and I think people are going to really buy into this one in a way that I think is consistent with the rest of the stories. It's a standalone adventure like all of them are; we don't expect people to have played the past games to enjoy the current one. But you're going to get to experience Drake and his crew in a new way."

Game isn't even close to being completed. I see a 2016 release date ahead.

@Williams0907 I don't know about that since they most likely have been working on the

game since Uncharted 3's release in 2011, I'd say late 2015 around Christmas.

Makes sense. It'll be very interesting to see what changes they make. Since the first trilogy is done, they can and probably should mix things up, especially since they're on new hardware and the timing is right. Looking forward to this game a lot. Might have to make sure I own a PS4 by that time.

'Very early pre-production'

Lol, holiday 2016 or 17. But hey, let's use a trailer for it 3, 4, possibly 5 years in advance.

Did half of those that commented not read the article? It clearly says that both guys worked on the first 2 Uncharted games, so why would the game change? Just because you read the headline doesn't mean you've read the story.

All I hope is that they don't mess up the light-hearted spirit the Uncharted games have. I love the Last of Us, but I also love Uncharted, and they have their different feel, one being very light-hearted and the other very tense and heavy in atmosphere. I hope they can keep them separate.

they should give the uncharted series a break. i was pretty much sick of it after the 2nd game. i didnt play 3 or the ps vita uncharted. i didnt think uncharted 2 was all that good besides the graphics and the little improved combat . the story wasnt very good and the characters seems to lost their charm. i found myself wanting to skip every cut scene in uncharted 2. and the way they had drake almost dieing even 2 minutes got old real fast. games like these need to be once or twice a gen imo . i will probably rent it when i get a ps4 in a few years and maybe get uncharted 3 if i can find it for 10 bucks or so. but right now i am just sick of the series

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah well that's your opinion while many logical thinking people want this series to go on because all 3 installments on PS3 were insanely well done and showed great improvement from the last, so this one should be no exception. Go back to your CoD modern borefare.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Let them try and do better, the series is loved by many so i don't see anything wrong trying to make a better Uncharted... Besides, it's not like they were spitting a new one every year like AC or CoD...

Wonder why everyone is making the departures into such a big deal. Naughty Dog has never taken the auteur approach in designing its games. As such, it's highly unlikely that the games that are currently in development are going to take a hit due to this.

How many people left Naughty Dog over the last 6-8 months? None of them were laid off or anything. They just left on their own, which still puzzles me. I hope the new games turn out well.

I guess they had to, cause of the recent loss of their employees, you have to admit that hurt, and that's probably why their being downplayed, you don't want to look weak, so their downplaying it

Sounds good to me... I'm glad they're not crying over spilled milk. Gotta tighten up the boot straps and move on... Not to mention Last of Us was one of the best games I've played in a very long time.

Prepare that every secondary character will die in Uncharted 4: Sally, Chloe, Elena, etc. And Drake will become a low life drunkard :D The reviews will be ravishing though. Will call the game the best dramah evah.

"Not significant at all"?

Damn that's cold. The departures really cast a cloud over the utopia that I thought Naughty Dog was. Druckmann and Straley moving in to the Uncharted leads definitely seems shady.

Why Uncharted people don't bring the Treasure hunter to Iran! the most Ancient country with lots of History and myth! and they stick to these chines, Japaneses Islands, east Asia the whole series not middle east!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Iran not Syria and Yemen, lots of history is there that they can use like Darius's the third treasure that hide it so that Alexander couldn't find it, it's the biggest treasure of ancient people Achaemenian Empire and still many people are looking for it! it was just an example of the Potential in it, like Assassin's Creed Xerxes Game.

So if they're just assigning a lead role for that game now, I suppose it's a safe bet we won't see a game till late 2015 or 2016 or so...?

I have to admit, this doesn't sound good for the Uncharted series. I love the series and most everything Naughty Dog has done. But all these changes are a bit concerning. Especially given the success of TLoU. (Good game). Are they going to try and make the Uncharted series more than what it is? Something more than a fun Indiana Jones esque shooter. I hope not. Bu t we'll see down the road. But no company or series is fool proof. Remember Rare?
