The Last Of Us 2's Neil Druckmann Had Message For His Team About "Haters"

Neil Druckmann sent an email to his team after the positive review scores came in, and he ended it with "f**k the haters."

After the review scores for The Last of Us Part II came in--and they were very good--writer-director Neil Druckmann sent an email to his team to thank them for their hard work. Druckmann has now shared some insight on what he said in the email, including his response to the haters.

Speaking to actor Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the game, Druckmann said he originally wanted to send thank-you texts to every developer, one by one. However, the team's sheer size made that impossible. Instead, he decided to send a message on a larger scale. He ended up using email rather than text.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

Druckmann said he was writing a text to art director John Sweeney, with whom he clashed often throughout development, and he began to cry. His reason for crying still isn't clear to him.

"When the reviews hit, he was one of the first people I thought of to text personally. I'm starting to write this text to him, 'Dude, I know we didn't always see eye to eye...' As I'm writing this text, I'm starting to cry, and I couldn't even understand why I'm crying. I realize I can't text everybody on the team--there's just too many people on the team. I just have to write the whole team an email, and I'm not very good at that stuff."

Druckmann said he doesn't remember exactly what he wrote to his team, but it touched on how he was getting too much personal praise when people should understand that making The Last of Us 2 was a team effort. He also told his team that he's never been prouder of any game he's worked on.

He also had a message for the haters. As it turns out, he isn't a big fan of them!

"I don't remember exactly what I wrote, but I'm writing about my fears like I'm getting too much praise and it's not being seen enough as a team project--but this is a Naughty Dog game, in every sense of the word," Druckmann said. "I forget how I ended it, but it was something to the effect of, 'Review scores are cool, but seeing your guys' pride is what I live for.'"

"The reviews were awesome, and it's great to hear people love the game and how much it resonates with them, but nothing comes close to hearing you, or Laura, or John, or any member of the team that has sent me an email since the game has come out to say this is the best game I've ever worked on. F**k the haters. Nothing makes me prouder that I've worked on in my life than this game."

Also in the interview, Druckmann spoke about how he does not focus too much on sales. He only hopes his games can make enough money to convince Sony to allow Naughty Dog to keep doing what it does.

"Our job is not to maximize profits or sales," he said. "The game is selling well, and I don't care. Just to talk about sales for a second, I just want to sell enough so we can do it again. So Sony will keep trusting us and giving us the creative freedom to do whatever we need to do. And anything beyond that is just gravy."

For what it's worth, The Last of Us Part II is a gigantic sales success. The game sold more than 4 million copies in its first three days, setting new PlayStation records.

Naughty Dog is now working on The Last of Us Part II's new multiplayer/online mode, while the company is also thinking about what might come next like The Last of Us III or something else.

So I paid for the game to support ND, and cause i didn't like lou2, (cause i am a fan from ND have all uncharted games played at least 3 times each, i have defended them all these years on the web) just cause I didn't like the story (cause I enjoyed gameplay from Abby cause Ellie got nothing), so that makes me a hater and the guy who i gave my money say: fU$k haters?

@kuchiki-ness: No, he in no way defined "hater" in that manner. You're flipping it upside down and inside out. He said "hater" to convey the meaning everyone undertands it to have...those who behaved in a hateful manner about not liking the game.

Did you behave in a hateful manner about not liking the game? No? Then he wasn't referring to you.

English. Get some.

@kuchiki-ness: If you already didn't like the game before it released, but looked up reviewers that also didn't like it so you can agree with them and get some talking points, and then talked about how bad the game is without ever playing it, you're a hater. If you decide to play it just so you can see how stupid it is, you're also a hater, because you're looking at it through the eyes of someone who really doesn't want to like it.

If you went into the game with a positive mind or an open mind and it turns out you just didn't like it, you're not a hater. You tried the game and your formed your own opinion and that's okay. It sucks that it didn't live up to your expectations, but you're allowed to criticize something you didn't like without being a hater.

@Ultima_Dragoon: thanks for the explanation... I went to a positive mind, I purchased day one, even start fighting to defend ND when I saw they give the game an 8 score here i wanted a 10 (check my messages) in the early no spoilers review before launch. Didn't saw/read any leaks, I was fresh starting game with my heart on it and first two hours I said, well this is for the story development and I was waiting the whole time what will change my mind during gameplay, and I finally end up hating it, I hated it. thank god that doesn't make me a hater, but I do hate it.

@esqueejy: You keep saying that people are misunderstanding what Druckman meant by haters and defining it incorrectly from what he meant. You then go on to tell us what you believe he meant. You are doing the same thing you are yelling at everyone else for doing.

@bdrtfm: No, I'm not saying they misunderstood it. I'm saying they're deliberately misinterpreting him. It's not a passive mistake they're making. There's no reasonable or rational way to interpret what he said as meaning "eff everyone who simply didn't like the game." Words themselves have meaning. Context further defines the intended meaning. You have to have a kindergartener's level of reading comprehension to think his word choice of "haters" was intended to be an insult to people who can manage to stay polite about their criticism and weren't out there behaving like the jerks and a-holes the word "hater" is universally used to refer to. Misinterpreting it on purpose like that is just a way of further feeding and perpetuating false grievance and the anger it generates.

How basic people hate on successful individuals who have something interesting to offer, just read the comments below HAHA

Good for the studio for releasing this incredible game!

I hope they’ll come up with something even more experimental next time!

Too bad some average couch potatoes couldn’t digest a less formulaic story, boohoo!

If I never have to hear or see Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us Part II, or anyone involved talk about the game or the controversy again for all of time, that would be totally fine.

It's been talked to death at this point and regardless of how one feel's about the game, Druckmann just looks like a sad man trying to protect his fragile ego and pet project. He's going to end up in a bathrobe, surrounded by liquor bottles, in some ramshackle home just talking to himself about "the haters".

@sabredj: I'm pretty sure the only real "controversy" here was how awfully some people behaved about not liking the game. It's a way of generating A controversy and then trying to rebrand that controversy as having been about the thing they were mad about, hating on and which had them behaving like turds. It's not. The ONLY controversy here is some peoples' abhorrent behavior.

Good, F Druckmann.

I am DONE with Naughty Dog. I already HATE Uncharted and always did. I loved the first Last of Us. Hell I didn't even want a sequel to be honest. It was perfect right where it ended. But of course money talks , so here comes the sequel. God is it a mess. I hate the game more than Uncharted for god sakes. I want to slit my wrists open, that is how shitty it is.

If that is the way the studio wants to be, I am done with them.

This is one of those moments that makes you come to recognize that games are not art. That's an argument you hear all the time, that they are, but they're generally not, they're products.

They often contain art but art generally doesn't come into value until the artist is dead, and what determines is value seems totally arbitrary often times, like, who actually unironically enjoys a Jackson Pollock.

Anyway, they're totally free to make artistic choices in their games and try to make it art, but when the community at large doesn't like it and it doesn't make enough money for the big wigs who bankrolled it, well, I guess enjoy looking for a new job when your message to anyone who disagrees with you is "**** the haters."

Oh, who am I kidding, we all know he's got a job waiting for him at Ubisoft if push comes to shove.

@Xylymphydyte: No, it's because comment boards are a skewed sample filter. The most likely people to flock to an article to post comments and like other comments are the angry, irrational butthurt people who have a bone to pick...and people like me, who love to get them enraged by poking them and pointing out how irrational and annoying they are. Why is this negative selection the case? Beacuse people have learned that they can surround themselves in an echo-chamber bubble of reverberating butthurt, where everyone is b-tching about the same thing and falsely deluding each other and themselves that there's massive cosmic consensus on the subject, that everyone agrees with them and they're part of the majority that thinks that way. It's just not even remotely true that the being the loudest, the flockiest, the post brigading-est, the ones who shout everyone else down, etc., is evidence you're the majority. Most people just roll their eyes at the people behaving that way. I just find it fun to throw it in your faces.

Know who is NOT flocking to articles like this one to squawk negativity and seek reassurance that their irrational butthurts are justified? Happy well-adjusted people who liked the game, and they are legion. They're also busy just playing the game and enjoying themselves. But we get it...you don't want them to and ti really bugs you all that the vast majority of people don't agree with you. I mean, you were loudest and made the most mess on the intertubes, so hwo could they not come around to your way of thinking, right?

@esqueejy: You're throwing all your butthurt on everyone you disagree with, seems to fit the bill. You've also convinced yourself you know what the 'truth' is in the situation, like it matters or that corporate marketing is going to tell you what that truth is.

I know I'm not convincing anyone of anything, I just find sporting fun in it.

@Xylymphydyte: Why shouldn't I? Some of us are sick and tired of it being done to us in the first place by the angry self-entitled a-holes who ruin almost every comment board on the internet with their vitriol and attempts to ruin everyone else's enjoyment of anything they've decided to have a problem with. How's it feel coming back at you for once?

@esqueejy: Exactly what is being done to you? Every comment you've made is to give people shit for their opinion. Every single one. Except for the people also giving people shit for their opinion. That you have no problem with. You trash everyone who has a different opinion than you and tell us only you know what Druckman said, meant and felt while saying the things he said. Unless your his mom and talked to him about it at length, you've have no better idea of what he meant than anyone else here.

@Xylymphydyte: But it has made enough money..... so his job is not in jeopardy. Pretty delusional post lol. Film's are products and so are paintings and most music. Being a product or the creator being dead are not qualifiers for what is art. Nice that you have heard of Pollock tho, deep cut.....

The story he wanted to make wasn’t worth it. I enjoyed the game and story personally but the hate for it is too strong and I feel bad for the developers who spent years of their lives making this game only to have it dismissed because of the story.

One thing I've learned from this game, Druckman can't take criticism at all. The main seller of the game was the story and the story had serious issues. Telling people who were disappointed with the game that they don't matter is a really stupid way to treat those who spent $60-$100 or more on a game. All he gives a damn about is that game journalists gave it good reviews so screw everyone else. Those journalists didn't even have to pay for the game. Those that did deserve better than to be brushed off as "Haters". When I talk to people about the game it seems to be about 50/50 as far as how many gamers loved it vs. how many gamers were disappointed. When less than 50% of people who've played a story driven game that had no side quests actually finished the story, there's a problem, high journalist reviews or not. According to the games tracker, that's how many people actually finished the story - 47.2%. The people at Naughty Dog have been telling Druckman he's their golden boy for so long, he can't fathom the thought that he made some really stupid choices in a video game.

Good thing he didn't do that. Haters means people who were behaving in a hateful manner. If you didn't behave that way, but just simply didn't like or were disappointed in the game, he wasn't talking about you. English 101.

@esqueejy: How about you keep your own personal interpretation of what he said and I keep mine K, Amazing Kreskin? People don't take offense to something someone said just for shits and giggles. I and many others felt offended by what he said. You are simply going to have to learn to deal with that because no amount of whining is going to change it.

@esqueejy: You want scientific data? According to TLOU2's game tracker only 47.2% of people who played the game finished the story. Less than half. For a game that is 99% about the story, that's a problem. But I guess those people who couldn't be bothered to finish the game are haters right? They're all just bigots.....

@The_PlagueLord: Dude, you have insulted everyone here who has an issue with the game. Get the F over yourself. And when I say talk to people, I'm talking about the hundreds of people who come into my electronics sales and service shop each week, many of whom like to chat about the games I sell them. But yeah, just pretend you know anything about me and how many friends I have because I didn't like a game as much as you. You didn't even write your own comment about the article, just went straight to attacking people who have a different opinion than you about a freaking video game.
