The Last Of Us 2's Neil Druckmann Had Message For His Team About "Haters"

Neil Druckmann sent an email to his team after the positive review scores came in, and he ended it with "f**k the haters."

After the review scores for The Last of Us Part II came in--and they were very good--writer-director Neil Druckmann sent an email to his team to thank them for their hard work. Druckmann has now shared some insight on what he said in the email, including his response to the haters.

Speaking to actor Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the game, Druckmann said he originally wanted to send thank-you texts to every developer, one by one. However, the team's sheer size made that impossible. Instead, he decided to send a message on a larger scale. He ended up using email rather than text.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

Druckmann said he was writing a text to art director John Sweeney, with whom he clashed often throughout development, and he began to cry. His reason for crying still isn't clear to him.

"When the reviews hit, he was one of the first people I thought of to text personally. I'm starting to write this text to him, 'Dude, I know we didn't always see eye to eye...' As I'm writing this text, I'm starting to cry, and I couldn't even understand why I'm crying. I realize I can't text everybody on the team--there's just too many people on the team. I just have to write the whole team an email, and I'm not very good at that stuff."

Druckmann said he doesn't remember exactly what he wrote to his team, but it touched on how he was getting too much personal praise when people should understand that making The Last of Us 2 was a team effort. He also told his team that he's never been prouder of any game he's worked on.

He also had a message for the haters. As it turns out, he isn't a big fan of them!

"I don't remember exactly what I wrote, but I'm writing about my fears like I'm getting too much praise and it's not being seen enough as a team project--but this is a Naughty Dog game, in every sense of the word," Druckmann said. "I forget how I ended it, but it was something to the effect of, 'Review scores are cool, but seeing your guys' pride is what I live for.'"

"The reviews were awesome, and it's great to hear people love the game and how much it resonates with them, but nothing comes close to hearing you, or Laura, or John, or any member of the team that has sent me an email since the game has come out to say this is the best game I've ever worked on. F**k the haters. Nothing makes me prouder that I've worked on in my life than this game."

Also in the interview, Druckmann spoke about how he does not focus too much on sales. He only hopes his games can make enough money to convince Sony to allow Naughty Dog to keep doing what it does.

"Our job is not to maximize profits or sales," he said. "The game is selling well, and I don't care. Just to talk about sales for a second, I just want to sell enough so we can do it again. So Sony will keep trusting us and giving us the creative freedom to do whatever we need to do. And anything beyond that is just gravy."

For what it's worth, The Last of Us Part II is a gigantic sales success. The game sold more than 4 million copies in its first three days, setting new PlayStation records.

Naughty Dog is now working on The Last of Us Part II's new multiplayer/online mode, while the company is also thinking about what might come next like The Last of Us III or something else.

It felt almost exhausting to play the game amid the storm while avoid spoilers. I often had to stop myself and think: "THIS is what they hate? Really?".

I feel like they missed out by doubling down on wanting to justify their conviction that the product is irredeemable following a few creative decisions that they disagreed with. In the end it made people emotional and that was what it strived to achieve. Of course it did not follow my hearts desire but that is what can make these stories special, else we get more of the forgettable, bland endings of games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider. At the very least this game is talked about and will be remembered.

The story may not appeal to you, and that is fine, but your emotional response is misguided to the creator rather than to (at least first try to) relate those feelings to the characters in the world.

@vagabond2k: Yeah I didn't like Shadow of the Tomb Raider either. I'd play TLOU2 12 times before I play that game again once. The story was just dull and uninteresting, especially compared to the first 2. And I'm a sucker for treasure hunting games with lots of mythology. Even if I hate the decisions of TLOU2 (which I don't) it just had so much heart, emotion, and passion in the performances and the worldbuilding is absolutely unmatched (for a non-RPG).

@vagabond2k: yup i missed out..

The way Sony & Duckman treated gamers & youtubers was off the rails ugly..

That is something alot of people cn't forgive/overlook..

Even people talking about the game got flagged..

*I was hoping the spoilers weren't true cause i woulda bought it.

I could care less about the LGBT stuff and most don't care.

They care about the bad writing & deliberate trolling of Joel fans..

*The worst has to be the mentality of if you dislike it you are this/that.

or you give death threats... I was hoping for more from the characters from the 1st game with a new story & improved gameplay from the awesome 1st game..

@vagabond2k: This game will be remembered, which is a positive imo. It's good for the general audience to remember how manipulative misery porn can be. We had a egregious example of misery porn in the joker movie, blatant oscar bait, the story makes no sense whatsoever, etc.. but the marketing was so effective, Phoenix was already considered the best actor even before the actual movie was released, lol Use a well know character, copy and adapt Scorsese for a massified audience, manipulate this audience and there it is... a nice and effective oscar bait. Last of Us is nothing more than the oscar bait mentality, but adapted to the videogame media. The first one worked because naughty dog plagiarized children of men, so... similar to joker who plagiarized taxi driver, they used a proven formula to sell their misery porn. And notice how children of men was relegated at release, nobody cared about it because it tried to be more action oriented. Really long takes, amazing cinematography, Cuarón doing his thing (another pretentious prick, but he at least have valid reasons to be like that), etc.. it smartly criticize social structures (the whole immigrantion mess) without being too manipulative and self indulgent. But the media and the public didn't cared that much. Now, pick the same exact story (literally, the cure plot line is identical, main character lost his son and become jaded, etc.. plagiarism as it finest).. but, here's the catch, inject some misery porn into it. Done, it becomes "high art". Now, notice how last of us 2 didn't had children of men to plagiarize anymore, so what is the result? A pathetic "revenge is bad" plot who features nonsensical characters protected by plot armor and contrivances. Both the cure and the world building were lost in the process, because there's no source to plagiarize anymore. The misery porn is so on the nose, that even people who are not accustomed with it, they notice it. So, it's not a sin to use misery in your product, do it, why not? But do it in a natural way. There's a lot of misery in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for example, but never in a self indulgent way. Misery used to enhance the storytelling, not to manipulate it.

@gleencross: It must suck to be so cynical about everything. You probably don't like "misery porn" because you seem pretty miserable. I wouldn't wanna play TLOU2 if I was depressed either. I'd seek help.

Great comment. I finished the game recently and finally spent some time reading comments on Youtube. Many people seemed to have quickly dismissed the whole game after only playing through to the major event in the first three hours.

I wish they could understand the moral ambiguity of what the game was trying to achieve.

Sounds like he was just trying to congratulate his staff and tell them how proud he was of them. I don't understand why this upsets so many people.

Yeah, he said "F the haters" to them so his crew could relax and be happy about the work they did without worrying about the chatter on the internet. He's not saying "F anyone who doesn't like the game". There's definitely a lot of haters out there as evidenced by this very comment section, and most didn't play the game anyway so I don't know why those people are up in arms over this.

Here is what I don't get; how did the director NOT understand that there would be blow back from the tone and choice of his game? Somehow there is the expectation that you are supposed to be praised no matter what? Part of the problem are sites like Gamespot and IGN. They have become echo chambers of what they deem "good" games and if you don't like those "good" games you are now some sort of "ism" or "ist". Last of Us Part 2 was a great game on a technological level but garbage on a story telling/pacing/internal logic level.

As an external observer (I haven't played any of TLOU games), I think Neil Druckmann shot himself in the foot pretty hard. I hadn't heard of him personally before, but with so many articles coming out over the last few months, all I can paint of him now is that he is very passionate about what he does but can absolutely not take criticism and calls to strike down youtubers for voicing their opinions, then takes random aim at his fanbase with a ''f***'' the haters and seem to want to further continue down that path.

So yea, I didn't even play this game and I don't think I will support his future projects, so I can understand how some fans feel. Sometimes if you can't contain your emotions maybe you should just stay off twitter.

Guys starting to come off like Cliff Bleszinski and you really don't want that image.

Besides, a large portion of players had very valid reasons for disliking the game, I myself thought it was mediocore and largely propped up by its gameplay, design and sound. A good developer would be listening to the criticism to perhaps try to find ways to fix it rather then simply complain about the haters.

And yes I know his comment is aimed at a very small subset of haters but the guy has frequently been acting as if he has hit perfection when many in the fanbase would disagree and its a shame that valid criticism is often being overshadowed by the small minority.

You are freaking out on everyone and absolutely pissed that they're not fantards of a game, even those who liked the game, but not as much as you. You want to know what all this pushback you say you are doing is going to do for you besides piss everyone off? Here, I'll tell you:

@southsouthsac: From what I can tell, some people saying it's pushing an agenda to ever tell any story that isn't about white dudes. I was prepared to eyeroll at stuff it ever got heavy-handed, and by the end I was like, what on earth are people so upset about. Lots of people in this world with interesting stories, and we've been ignoring a lot of them for a really long time.

@megagood2345: Generally, I don't think a lot of the most vocal "agenda pushing" haters actually know what they're upset about, because they're never going to play the game to find out. They've just got bits on information and then fill in all the blanks with whatever they want to get outraged over so they can get outraged. I'm pretty sure the outrage is the actual goal here.

@mogan: There is so much character development and story that is told in the gameplay and not in cutscenes, which people will definitely miss if they just watch cutscenes on youtube. I doubt that haters are willing to dedicate 30 hours to a game just so they can rip on it. Besides, it might change their opinion and they don't want that. I fully hated Abby after Ellie's Day 3 and by the end of Abby's Day 3, I lightweight wanted to kill Ellie (sorta) in the theater. I felt where Abby was coming from, especially since she basically had no idea who or why all her friends were being killed. As a player, we know everything about these 2 characters, but they don't actually know anything about each other which is why they're so hellbent on revenge and kept escalating the situations. I love talking about the game with people who are willing to be open-minded but it's tough on the internet.

Neil made his own version of "The Last Jedi", complete with media pandering and customer beratement, painting the entire critical fanbase as evil misogynists. Surprise, surprise...the fan base is deeply fractured and he may have all but killed the franchise.

I have no particular feelings on this project, not having a PS4 nor caring for zombie/survival games in general. What I do see that pisses me off is rampant criminal abuse of the DMCA. (and yes, it is a felony to do what they did nomatter your feelings on youtubers).

F naughty dog.

@Theinfmustroll: big·ot/ˈbiɡət/noun

  1. a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.

First, everyone knows that an explosion of hating on the game was long planned because the girl was revealed to be a lesbian.

Second, being a bigot doesn't necessarily mean it has anything to do with any of the "-isms". "Haters" are people who behave hatefully all over the place because they are intolerant of people holding other opinions...like people who mercilessly and personally attack developers all over social media and the intertubes because they are intolerant of the developers' opinions that they put out a good product or that their products are enhanced by diversity and inclusivity. Those haters are bigots...and that's who he was referring to...not to people who can just accept that they didn't like the new installment of the game and then move on with life without feeling the need to behave like an ass all over the place in hopes of convincing as many people as possible to hate the game with them, etc. Developers SHOULDN'T care about those people. They're toxic and deserve nothing but scorn.

ETA: And I love how the post immediately following yours proves ME right.

@esqueejy: What a load of rubbish. Left Behind was when ND first introduced Ellie as a lesbian and it scored higher than the base game. Poof, there goes that bigotry theory. People like you and Druckman can't simply admit that your precious game, while good, has some flaws. It has to be perfect in everyone's eyes or they have an agenda. BS. You talk about how bigots are anyone who are intolerant of others opinions while calling people bigots for merely having opinions. Your lack of self awareness is astounding.

@Theinfmustroll: I don't think everyone who criticizes Naughty Dog or the game is a bigot (parts of the game are pretty tedious), but the ones foaming at the mouth that some underrepresented voices getting airtime, yeah, they're bigots. I'm not being intolerant of them, I'm holding them accountable.

Our brains work in a predictable, forgivable way. Something makes us uncomfortable, our brains get to work coming up with a reason that will make it sound logical and defensible, which we post on message boards. In reality, it's just we see something as "the other" and don't like it. And we say something's "pushing an agenda" without realizing that all games push an agenda. If we don't notice it, it's because it's pushing our own agenda, or reinforcing the status quo. We've been the "default" for so long that we resist not being the default.

Think Abby's too buff? Did we also rage against Femshep and almost all other female characters for being too waify? Probably not. Did we apply a similar demand for "realism" to all other aspects of the game? Probably not. Why did we pick this out to hammer on?

Tired of new voices getting more time on the microphone? Have we done an honest count of representation in video games and realized that the numbers don't justify that? Probably not.

Just wake up tomorrow and decide it's great that new stories and struggles are being told in an art form we love, instead of resenting it. And whenever we feel a little out of sorts because we're seeing people on screen who are not like us, remember that other groups have experienced the same thing, constantly, for decades.

@Theinfmustroll: Understand it perfectly. Guess which one of us is an attorney. Guess, you clown. Guess.

Sending cease and desist letters or making a claim that turns out to be without merit is not "illegal." WTF is wrong with you people that everything you don't like has to be twisted into something "illegal"? Let me help you: just because something sounds right to your layperson's mind, doesn't mean that it must be what the law says.

I'm not shilling anything. Your penchant for going straight to some form of tinfoil hatted conspiracy is almost as bad as the habit of trying to turn everything into something "illegal" just because you didn't like it.

Even were someone to prove that what they did to them in their particular case was an abuse of process, that's a tort action, not something that is "illegal."

Shame that the no life hater types had to make it harder to legit criticize the game. Like how there is no multiplayer. Like how new game plus offers little compared to other games that have more replay value. Like how some parts feel drawn out and unskippable.

Still a great feat in gaming though. Good Job Naughty dog!

@goldenageplayer: i miss factions, but the game is so huge i can't fault anyone for not including it. i am sad about it, and i'm not sure i'll buy a standalone factions. it always felt weird to me to buy an online-only game.

new game plus is supposedly harder than the same difficulty on new game, that's what the game says when you select it. i haven't tried it yet, starting survivor+ this weekend (oh wait, that's tonight!). i imagine the added difficulty will get compensated by the player and weapon upgrades.

i know they do not plan on releasing dlc for this, but i do hope they'll add grounded mode.

@goldenageplayer: As someone who really enjoyed the game, I've seen maybe two or three reviews from streamers that objectively reviewed the game in an analytical sense and stuck to the points and made good arguments for why they didn't like it. I can respect that. However, there's a VAST majority of people that use really dumb arguments where you can tell they didn't even play the game and they drown out people with legitimate complaints. I'm starting to assume all people who don't like the game are riding this hate bandwagon but I know it's not true.

You can always tell the haters when they talk about Neil "Cuckmann" more than the game itself, SJWs, how gay the game is, how buff Abby is, etc.

@goldenageplayer: "Shame that the no life hater types had to make it harder to legit criticize the game."

Yup... It´s hard to see good criticism when most haters don´t really care about logic... Some people have really good arguments (not that I agree with them) for not liking the game.
