The Division Review in Progress Update

Long division.

[Update] After four days and more than 50 hours of play, I’ve finally “beaten” The Division--although I’m by no means finished with it yet. Those 50 hours were spent exploring the world, completing story missions, and grinding through side content in order to keep up with the campaign’s rigorous leveling demands. But I’m still anxious to dive back into the Dark Zone, to track down all the open world content I skipped, and to start crafting my own high-end gear. That’s right, even with the campaign behind me, I’m still anxious for more.

The game has a few obvious shortcomings--including its rote enemy AI and occasionally clunky shooting mechanics--but the more I played, the less I cared about The Division’s various imperfections. Instead, I simply grew more invested in the world, the story, and most of all, the loot. For those reasons and more, I’m happy to report my positive impressions earlier on only grew stronger the more I played.

With that end game content still in front of me, however, I’m not quite ready to issue a verdict. That’s why we’ve decided to update you today and post our full written review and accompanying video review later this weekend. In the meantime, you can watch the game’s opening missions and end game options thanks to our vigilant video team. See you on Sunday.

The original story is below.

Depending on your timezone, you may already have a retail copy of Tom Clancy's The Division installing on your machine of choice. The game officially launches on March 8, and just like you, we're only now getting our hands on the final product. Though GameSpot often receives review code ahead of a game's scheduled launch date, Ubisoft opted to give reviewers access the same day as everyone else in this particular instance. As a result, our official scored review will not go live until we've had an opportunity to complete the campaign, conquer the Dark Zone, and explore everything else the game has to offer--including its live, populated servers.

From the limited amount I've played so far, I can tell you the core experience hasn't changed much since the game's recent betas, though I was finally able to play to the previously omitted opening section. Rather than waking up mid-crisis in a chopper bound for Manhattan, you start in the considerably calmer borough of Brooklyn just moments after your Agent is activated. Following an introductory cutscene, you customize your character's physical features in a car window before heading off to the local command center for a formal briefing--or at least, as formal your beleaguered crew can muster.

No Caption Provided

This section smartly aligns your perspective with that of your character: both of you are just now joining the effort to curb the rampant violence engulfing a virus-stricken New York City, so it makes sense you'd get some light training and exposition. Though it's clear The Division will be driven far more by loot than by character progression, this early narrative framing provides enough context that the action at least makes sense--even if there's arguably a logical disconnect between The Division's themes of peacekeeping in a survival situation and the constant gunfights of the moment-to-moment gameplay. Still, by the time you've cleaned up Brooklyn, you'll have gathered the equipment and experience you need to dive into the real conflict in Manhattan.

Enemies still absorb a great deal of damage, but with the right gear, they don't necessarily feel like total bullet sponges. Putting down any enemy remains a challenge, but you no longer have to expend an entire clip to take down one guy, assuming you've been diligently upgrading your load out. A much bigger issue--at least early on--is enemy variety. The first few hours recycle the same garden variety looters over and over, most of whom employ the same tired tactics every time. In certain instances, I actually noticed enemies run past me as if on a preset paths. Mission variety also seems to be a potential issue, as the first three side missions in Brooklyn all reuse simplistic objectives seen in the betas: go to a location, tag an object, defend the object from incoming enemies. Thankfully, I've yet to see either the Rikers or Cleaners in action, and there's plenty of campaign still ahead of me. With any luck, these as yet unseen elements will inject the variety The Division needs.

With dozens of hours and unlocks ahead of me, it's still far too early to assign a score, but my initial impressions are positive. You can check back later this week for the full review, but in the meantime, you can enjoy our livestream of the first six hours to get a better sense of what post-outbreak New York has in store.

The only way to like this game is to think of it as completely unrealistic.

I don't know, I love RPGs but feels weird on a shooter vs humans the implementation of lvls.

The same low lvl bad guy wearing a hoodie can go down in one shot if he is your lvl, ortake 1000 shots to go down if he is a few lvls above you.

Feels weird.

@julianboxe: agreed, the first thing I noticed from the video about is having to shoot someone in the head mutiple times with a sub-machine gun before they'll die. That's just stupid. Unless they're wearing a ballistic helmet or something everyone should die immediately from a single headshot.

@sladakrobot: The difference is tone and theme. In Borderlands you are in an animated world filled with rediculous humor and fourth wall breaks, you are not expected to take the world or even the mechanics all that seriously. The Division is a Tom Clancy title, something that used to be associated tactical realism with the tone more in line with the real world. For me at least there is a large dissonance between the tone of the game and its mechanics, the bullet sponge effect does not meld well with the way the world is being presented to you. For some that may not be a problem but for me and many others its very jarring and it leaves the combat feeling unsatisfying.

I like the game(played beta open and closed), for me it's a console saver.....meaning i was thinking of selling my console.....all the games that have been released so far suck, or get boring very quickly.

That been said...i have two issues....why the hell can i not crouch where ever i wish?.....Why does a friend need to be at the same level has myself when we go into the DZ??.....Yet i get my ass kicked from players many times higher than me???....

Great looking game....smooth play....apart from cover/crouch maneuver...easy join other friends and gamer's...

Have they limited themselves by creating a online only game???

It has crashed 3 times,,,,,and had a sound issue where we had to reboot to get rid of it...

i saw the latest reviews on GS, inconsistency is the only word that can describe GS ... i am not a Destiny/shooter/MOBA gamer or whatever kids are playing this day but this game deserve more than 7/10 ... a good surprise from Ubi despite some online issues ... the story is behind you as character, you don't say a word whole game :-) you're not a Fallout hero or Nathan Drake or Joel ... you're just one soldier, unknown one ... i like this approach ...for sure on Gamespot will not be reviewed more than 7 ...FC Primal got 8 in GS style

I got it earlier, and like the beta (the one everyone got a chance to play), I'm really, really enjoying a lot, and that's great, because I'm not someone that wants to interact with the portion where you interact with other players. The shortcomings that I can see, which I already feel I can look past, is the monotonously designed side content in terms of helping people, which are fun still, but are the same other than the surroundings around you as far as I can tell. I'm also curious about where the story goes, and if it's as good or better than G.R.A.W.

Advanced Warfighter didn't have a great story itself, but it was serviceable enough that I loved the game regardless. I love the detailed, realistic setting (though I wonder if I would feel any different if I had actually lived in New York). I think even the collectibles do a really good job filling it with backstory, so they're actually worth getting, and there's a lot of them. I also love the soundtrack, and the gameplay is great too. There's just a few things that you have to look past or just not mind, like the fact it's unrealistic human enemies take more than a few shots to go down depending on their level.

I guess so far, and from the get-go, my biggest issue is just the fact it is always online. I don't think it is all that necessary.

This game is super awesome. I didn´t like the beta and I don´t like Destiny.

Instead of hating for no reason, you should give it another look.

This game is an absolute blast with friends, I haven't had so much fun with a multiplayer game in years. It might be different playing with people you don't know or alone, but this game was really made to play with friends and it's just fantastic in my personal opinion.

Heh, this game is actually really good. There are some bugs, let's hope patches get rid of it (Map bug, where map doesn't move/black screen of death on log on with some people, dozens of Error Code: Mike, etc)... still, this game to me is a solid 9/10, easily... and only morons compare this to Destiny btw.

@cgobeil: Fallout 4, compared to 3, was indeed a big frustration... All the side quests in Fallout 4 except 1 side mission, were incredibly short and boring.

I am having a lot of fun playing the game, both single player and with pals! Got to get into the DZ more often. The DZ with friends is definitely a necessity! I find the negative small compared to the overall experience. There is no shortage of content either. Being from the original 8 bit era, I am always a fan of modern graphics and this game looks great! Even on my old 720p plasma! Have fun!!!!!!!!

@pnova: Note that Division actually has a very in-depth story at is present in the game at launch. With a major plot twist that makes sense. As well as many moment where the game just pulls you into the world because of the environments details. Destiny lacked this. Division literally improved on many of the major flaws of Destiny, and game it more of an RPG feel with a shooter combat system. Instead of a Shooter with a few RPG elements.

@pnovabest way i can describe it is that the players make the experience instead of the devs. the developers have found a way to set a great environment with pockets of little stories around every street. the main story is good, simple, but the stories the environment give seem endless and unexpected.

the weapons feel f-ing good as well.

the more you play the more you will understand what I'm saying. If you don't own it you will never understand.

watching someone live stream isn't the same as playing.

this game is a gem.

To all doubters, let me put it this way: even without the MMO bits about it, this is a very solid third person shooter. The gameplay mechanics are very solid and fluid, and allow for great strategic gameplay. The AI makes it plausible to want to flank groups of enemies and use your skills to their greatest advantage. Yes, the missions can get repetitive. You go to a mission and your objectives basically boil down to fighting hordes of enemies and a boss. But again, the gameplay is so solid that I at least do not care. Now throw in MMO elements, such as gear and the Dark Zone pvp area, and you have an even better game. This, like Destiny in many ways, is a lot closer than most any other MMO has come to being the kind of MMO I want. Even the story is above average for an MMO. Even if you don't buy into the whole MMO aspect of it, if you like solid third person shooters, then this game should please you.

You don't need to wait for a review.

You already know what it is.

Does some overpaid stoner employed by a media leech need to give you validation for your purchase?

If you haven't purchased the game yet, look at it. Watch the trailers and do some research if you're on the fence. You'll know.

The last 50+ games I bought I didn't wait for a review. I did some research and knew I'd like it. And I did.

Some of you need to know your own tastes and what you like. Stop being so dependent on others subjective reasoning.

It just doesn't live up to the hype it got. It is an average game at best. If it was made purely from a single player perspective with drop in/out coop then I could see this game being a lot better. The Dark Zone is actually a decent idea but how it actually works is pretty stupid. Encouraging people to steal loot is dumb.

@thomasn7: they don't encourage you to kill people and steal their contaminated stuff, they just give you the option to do it, and make it more intense, i don't think a lot of people are understanding how the dark zone works, but going rogue is very risky, because everyone can see you if you kill someone, and people will try to kill you, and if you die as rogue you lose a lot of dark zone exp, your keys, the items you stole, dark zone funds, etc.
