The Detective Pikachu Movie Starring Ryan Reynolds Now Has A Release Date

The Detective Pikachu movie, in which Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds voices the ultra-famous creature, now has a release date. The live-action film is coming out on May 10, 2019, film company Legendary (Warcraft, Jurassic World) announced today, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to Reynolds, the Detective Pikachu movie stars The Get Down's Justice Smith and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is directing the film, which is set to begin production in London this January.

It was previously reported that in addition to Reynolds, the film's producers were looking at Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, and Mark Wahlberg to take on the role of Pikachu. Based on the Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu, the movie is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

Pokemon fans who can't wait are in luck, though. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were recently released. Reynolds returns to the big screen in Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018.
