That Girl Is Poison

GameSpot's Carolyn Petit reflects on the portrayal of gaming's most prominent transgender figure.

Street Fighter X Tekken has been out for a week now. It's a significant game for a number of reasons, but for me personally, no reason is more significant than its inclusion of Poison as a playable character.

I can't discuss why this matters to me without getting personal, so let's get personal: I'm transgender. Speaking for myself, I can say that growing up was very painful. The contrast between who I knew I really was and who everyone else expected me to be was frequently excruciating. But video games were a valuable means of temporary escape, a way to enter a world where I could leave this painful fact of my life behind and connect with something directly. They gave me a place where I could face and overcome challenges that reminded me I could also overcome the challenge of getting through another day in the real world.

No Caption Provided
Who could have predicted that Poison would go on to create such a stir?

On very rare occasions, video games managed to find a way to remind me of my real-world anguish. I remember feeling a bit hurt when I read the manual for Super Mario Bros. 2, which described Birdo as a boy who believed he was a girl and wanted to be referred to as Birdetta. Clearly, Birdo's feelings were presented as a joke, and I wondered, then, if I were a joke. But more often, games inspired me. I felt a kind of pride in the revelation that Samus Aran, intrepid explorer and intergalactic bounty hunter, was female. Just like me.

The fact that anyone at Capcom ever thought it was acceptable to treat Poison's identity as something to be mocked and denied stings.

In the years since I first read about Birdo, I've encountered very few transgender characters in games. However, one video game character has served as a kind of lightning rod for discussion of transgender issues: Poison. Now that Poison has taken on her biggest, most attention-getting role yet, there's plenty of talk out there about her convoluted history, but I'm not interested in rehashing the details here. I'm interested in exploring why her identity matters to me.

When I first encountered Final Fight in an arcade in about 1990, I was immediately enamored with it. Metro City's slums and subways were wonderfully grungy, and wrestler-turned-mayor Mike Haggar was a fantastic hero who in my mind rivaled any character played by Schwarzenegger on the big screen. Playing as Haggar, I would pile-drive the female Mad Gear thug Poison with all the enthusiasm with which I pummeled all her male counterparts. After all, I'd already fought against Linda in Double Dragon, and I didn't go easy on her, either. The way I see it, if you're going to kidnap someone and then use physical force against those intent on rescuing the person you've kidnapped, you deserve to get clocked. Also, if you're a video game character, you can't feel actual pain.

But apparently someone somewhere took issue with the idea of clobbering sprites that resembled women. So for the SNES version of Final Fight, Poison and her fellow Mad Gear girl Roxy were replaced with male thugs Sid and Billy. Poison was far from out of the picture, though.

No Caption Provided
Now Poison is holding her own in Street Fighter X Tekken.

If you read the current Wikipedia page about Poison, it suggests that she was turned into a transgender character to address concerns from Americans about hitting women, as if hitting a woman who is transgender is far more acceptable than hitting a woman who is not. This problematically reinforces the notion that transgender women aren't really women at all.

A new video on YouTube about Poison indicates that she was originally designed as a transgender woman, which would be fine with me, except that here in the US, Capcom has often treated this aspect of her identity as an appropriate subject for ridicule. Initial win screens for characters that defeated Poison earlier in the development of Street Fighter X Tekken showed them saying things like, "Your looks can really be deceiving! I should be careful not to fall into your trap," and "You're not very ladylike at all. I felt like I was fighting against a guy…" In other words, these characters were denying Poison her identity, and this can be extremely painful for transgender people.

Capcom denied Poison her female identity in other ways, too. At one point, the game's official site said of Poison, "She may look like a finely curved woman, but looks can be deceiving." The win quotes and the website text have been changed, but the fact that anyone at Capcom ever thought it was acceptable to treat Poison's identity as something to be mocked and denied stings. She clearly identifies as female and lives her life as female; for a video game character as for a real person, this should be all anyone needs to know. She is female in every way that should matter to anyone.

No Caption Provided
Poison knows who she is. If you have a problem with it, that's your problem.

We mock what we don't understand, what scares us, or what makes us uneasy. Most of us only need to think back to our days in middle school to see proof of this; it's the kids who are different that are the targets of bullying and mocking. It's saddening to see this same juvenile attitude reflected in Capcom USA's approach to Poison, and it's all the more striking when you consider that this deep-seated anxiety and the accompanying cruelty it breeds isn't mirrored in Japan. If Poison's treatment is any indication, we have a particular level of discomfort with transgender people here in the United States.

She clearly identifies as female and lives her life as female; for a video game character as for a real person, this should be all anyone needs to know.

Problematic as the apparent origins for her transgender status are, I'm glad that Poison exists. In general, I want more transgender characters in games. But sometimes I think that Capcom's handling of Poison only encourages people to mock her--to see her identity, and the identity of transgender people in general, as less than fully legitimate. Even the seemingly well-intentioned documentary about Poison on YouTube is not without its problems; it frames the dichotomy of Poison as one between her being "transgender" and "100% female," as if those two things were mutually exclusive. As someone who has always felt that I am 100 percent female in mind and spirit, and who felt that pretending to be a boy was the lie, this makes me wonder: What percent female, exactly, are transgender women like me?

So if nothing else, Poison helps to illuminate the fact that we still have a long way to go in our understanding and acceptance of transgender individuals. In an ideal world, in my opinion, Poison's debatably transgender identity would be just one detail of her character, no more of an issue than Ryu's race or Guile's hair color. But we're not there yet, not by a long shot. My hope is that in the future, Capcom treats her with the dignity she deserves. But in the meantime, Poison seems secure enough in her own sense of identity to not give a damn what Capcom thinks, or to be fazed by the comments of players who may make fun of her.

And to that I say, "You go, girl."

@ratin-the-glass Lost of good material in those comments. Except for homosexuality. There is a whole chapter in Genesis about that in Sodom and Gomorrah. @kid23455 Na, my point is that its disgusting.

What exactly is transgendered? Does that mean she has a penis Or she is simply a lesbian? I mean I am truly thrown here.

@Smokescreened84 I just explained that... that isn't how the scientific method works. That isn't proof, it's opinion/belief. Proof must be verifiable, able to be tested, and able to be shown to be accurate.

@Smokescreened84 What you read and heard over the few years are false, I'm afraid. They're either made by Islamophobic sources/media or extremist Islamic fundamentalists. I, personally, HIGHLY disagree with homosexuality and trans. Would I be friends with some? Not really because I personally am not comfortable and I do not want to promote them. All I say is that I wanna stay away from them and have little to no contact. Be who u wanna be but it is God who will judge.

@aajep I'm with you there. I do however believe that we have a Creator. I don't attach religion to it. To me religion is one of those things that you would say "humanity gave to themselves" in order to control behavior.

@awheaten So it's a "you can't like what I don't like argument"? Well if that's the case, I want to burn all holy books ever. You can't enjoy religion because I don't. You also can't enjoy movies either, because I hate them too. Also, you can't enjoy any video game that is a first person shooter because I hate those.

My view has always been that you shouldnt bring religion to the table when you are discussing either a game where the two main characters can shoot fireballs from their hands or a game where you can have premarital sex with aliens, oh and can use telekenesis. Both of these game series present characters who are arguably guilty of witchcraft as forces of good, in one of them you can practise bestiality.

I dont understand why people keep complaining about Gamespot journo's Talking about Sexual Issues, saying things like 'ugh why do they have to write about homosexuality, they are just getting on the bandwagon'. Firstly, you dont have to read the article! in the article description it says "GameSpot's Carolyn Petit reflects on the portrayal of gaming's most prominent transgender figure" If you dont want to read about transgender or homosexuality in games dont read it! If Carolyn Petit is indeed a transgender woman then i think it was very brave of her to talk about it and the prescence (Or lack of) transgender characters in video games.

@LastRambo341 - I've seen them, but I still have my doubts after everything I've seen and read over the years. The proof I want is not from links, but from you. Prove to me, just you, yourself, without any links, on how you interpret those words and how you regard anyone with difference that has commented here, on the person who made this article and how you regard the people where you live. Prove to me that you see them with your heart, not just with a holy text.

@Smokescreened84 They interpret it differently. And again, we're not supposed to "murder" them, heck, even the Prophet didn't murder them. The only time they would get punished is if due to sodomy. If you didn't see the links, then I'm afraid your points have been beaten down. Its the people who do the murder, not religion. Believe what you want. I'll give you one more chance to look at the links and you will be shocked

@SinStarship - It doesn't say how we have personalities though, does it? How we can all be so different from one another when it comes to personalities and how we perceive the world around and ourselves. That aspect of life is the greatest mystery.

@LastRambo341 - I read something a few weeks, a protest petition thing, that remarked on the Muslim community hunting down homosexuals and killing them, here in the UK the Muslim community is known for hunting down and murdering anyone who is homosexual and/or trans-gender. Now I didn't believe that it was the majority, but what you told me in your religion's holy text about people like me being unnatural makes me wonder just exactly how the Muslim people interpret those words. Do they see them as an excuse to murder? I hope not, but after what I saw I find myself having doubts. I can't accept your links as proof, not after that I've seen and read. And not after what you told me. I am not unnatural, nor is anyone who else who is trans-gender or homosexual or bi-sexual, we are just fellow human beings who are different from you and no holy book has the right, nor does anyone have the right, to say that we do not have the right to exist. I will always be fascinated by your culture and beliefs, but I can't condone murder. Just as I can't condone the same thing in western culture, it's disgusting to be so hateful towards those who mean you no harm.

@Smokescreened84 Humans are only literally, flesh, blood, bone and neural impulses. Nothing is physically more than the sum of it's parts. It's what people do and have ability to do that exceeds this.

@Smokescreened84 I have literally heard the exact same argument, almost word for word, by religious individuals arguing for their beliefs. How people perceive what is in front of them varies wildly from person to person, influenced by their own life experiences, opinions, etc. That is the very reason the scientific method exists - to reach conclusions based on verifiable evidence that can be tested and shown to be accurate, rather than basing it upon belief. Trying to argue a belief with a belief is like two people arguing in different languages. It wont go anywhere. You have to have proof to make the claim you are making, otherwise it can't be presented as fact.

@Awheaten You are talking about god. I have yet to meet an atheist that is against homosexuality. No, indifference doesn't count. I doubt there's many people out there that don't like homosexuality for any reason other than their god told them not to.

"You can't disprove science with god, but you can't disprove god with science YET." @kid23455 But, I don't have to do that because I believe God exist. Not only that but I believe that God made science so that we can understand some of His wonders. When I learn about science, I see God in that because of the mistery and logic in nature. @All for those who say, why are we talking about religon. To me, everything is on the table for a subject like this. This article is a healthy debate on people who choose to live a certain way. Why they do it? And is it the right thing to do? Or is it natural?

@sircyrus - There is no greater proof than what is right in front of you, if you are willing to see that proof instead of trying to shape it by the demands of those who are not the same as the proof before them. @LastRambo341 - Those links are not proof. Your religion clearly states that people like me - anyone with difference - is unnatural, which in humans minds means putting those people to death for being different. That kind of take on religion is very flawed and very wrong, and until humans are capable of accepting one another instead of killing one another then religion will never be used in a peaceful manner.

@Smokescreened84 Again, just because you believe something does not make it true. You are presenting opinion as fact. Science has never proven that someone is born homosexual or transgender. Hell, when a baby is born they don't even know what gender , letalone which one they are. It has nothing to do with fear or refusals to understand. It has to do with what can be scientifically proven.

@Smokescreemed84 Not all homosexual/heterosexual people are 'hard wired' ( a pretty derogatory phrase in this context) to be gay lesbian or bi sexual fro birth. While genetics and different levels of various hormones (like oestrogen and testosterone) are indeed factors in some cases. What I'm about to say now may get me some bad press but here it goes. Other cases are down to a deep psychological changes within a persons mind set. The event that triggered this can be have greatly varying aspects like time and intensity. There are also those who are just curious or simply enjoy it. In terms of your reference to animals. yes indeed they do things by instinct and innate behaviour, however violence is seen in all aspects of nature. Family groups of baboon's for instance will fight other groups, for space and resources. Not much different from humans, only scaled down and without beliefs and reasons spawned as a bi-product of humanity and advanced sentience.

@LastRambo341 - Homosexuality was around in the Roman empire, the height of Greece's existence before the Romans and well before even then, it's always been around. In the Roman empire and the Greece culture homosexuals were highly prized and accepted as people of great sexual interest and of great friendships, they held a high status and place. If enlightened by religion means to be put to death for being different, then it's a good thing I'm not enlightened since I would prefer to live the years I have left than to be murdered in the name of ignorance. @sircyrus - They are born that way, just as I was born bi-sexual and trans-gender. Those who are born heterosexual would never understand, nor are most ever willing to for fear of actually learning something and seeing that their fear and ignorance is wrong.

@Smokescreened84 "But it never answers the old questions of the species as to why we're here," And nothing will ever answer that question except that God does exist. It may not be the way you want him to exist. But, He does. Unfortunately, He used men who are far faultier than you and I to bring us the Gospel. But, it happened. Sure it did. Why do you think we are here? It is it truly random? Can life exist anywhere? For me, there are too many whole in the thought that 'There is no God'. People only say that because unfortunately evil exist as well, so they say, 'There is no God'.

Even if they feel miserable about it. And please just leave dear ol' God out of this discussion. Is not his fault you guys can't get along. Probably right now he might be playing Atari basketball with Satan, while drinking beer and watching Jesus make a wooden table for Mary. Life is short enough, so enjoy the rest of the day!

Your body is your soul's house to reside in. If you don't like the way that house looks or feels, then by all means remodel it to your liking so that you may can live inside it comfortably. After all that's why our Creator gave us surgeons.

@awheaten people like you are the reason kids stop believing in their faith. No one wants to turn into a weird religious blowhard like you who trolls on gaming sites comparing things like killing and stealing to homosexuality. Maybe one of your kids will turn out to be gay or transgender, what will you think then? Hell, that kind of poetic justice might just even restore my faith(probably not)

@Smokescreened84 The claim that people are homosexual from birth has never been substantiated by science. Instead, all indications point to the cause being a variety of factors, including genetics, hormones, environment, life experiences, etc. Just because you believe they are born that way does not make it fact. @LastRambo341 & @awheaten The same goes for your religious beliefs. They have never been substantiated. For your beliefs to have any relevance in society (rather than just to you) they have to first be proven to be correct. That means proving that a deity exists, then proving that only deity exists, then proving that deity is the one from your holy book, then proving that your holy book hasn't been changed from it's original writings and is in fact an accurate record of that deity's guidance.

@Smokescreened84 1) I know many people that chose to be. I guarantee you that environment and raising do make a huge difference. Can you give me proof of any homosexuals before the people of Soddom and Gomorrah? 2) Pretend? Ya ok, deny it all you want. Just because you weren't enlightened and went through it, doesn't mean all would

@awheaten So in god's eyes if I decide to have "sex" with another guy it's just as bad if I went into my local Wal-Mart and opened fire? I'd rather rot in hell than worship a god like that. BTW I knew you were a Christian the second I looked at your avatar.
