Telltale's Walking Dead Might End Early, But At Least One Dev Still Wants You To Play Episode 2

"[T]he episode is also just goddamn good, and the best feeling we could have right now is to know it's being played."

Last week, news broke that Telltale Games, the developer of The Walking Dead and several other episodic adventure games based on popular licenses, was undergoing a "majority studio closure," laying off all but 25 of its employees and leaving the fate of its current projects up in the air. It was an unexpected announcement, particularly given that it came just before the release of The Walking Dead: The Final Season's second episode, but at least one former developer would still like players to enjoy it.

In a post on Reddit, Michael Kirkbride, the former season lead designer on The Walking Dead: The Final Season, shared his thoughts on the situation and encouraged players to play through the upcoming episode. "In a couple of days the second episode of WD4 drops and I just wanted to make sure to let you know it's something pretty special. AJ, Clem, Vi, Louis, and all the rest move forward in interesting and unexpected directions, so I hope everyone plays it despite how absof***ingborked the rest of this situation is," Kirkbride wrote.

Now Playing: The Walking Dead: The Final Season - Episode 2 Trailer

"And I'd like to clarify that none of us that poured everything we had into this episode (and what would've been the follow ups) had any idea this would happen. We were just excited to give you all the best ending to Clementine's journey that we could. Maybe a bit of understanding on that end will encourage you to at least give the episode a play, even if it'll be uniquely placed in the tragic history of Telltale's efforts.

"We know it's weird, we know it sucks, we know it's sad in ways that's almost impossible to articulate, and we know it's awful that we can't tell you what would've happened after, but the episode is also just goddamn good, and the best feeling we could have right now is to know it's being played."

Telltale had four episodes planned for The Walking Dead: The Final Season, along with a number of other projects in the works, such as a second season of The Wolf Among Us and a game based on the Stranger Things series. With the vast majority of the studio laid off, however, it's unclear just what the fate of these projects will be. Telltale has only said that it will "issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks," although in a letter to fans, Clementine's voice actress says no more episodes of The Walking Dead will be released.

What is he gonna say "We completely rushed it and it sucks?"

I mean, that's far more likely to be true, but they'd never tell you that.

This situation right here is why episodic content does not have any sustainability. I always waited until the season was done and I'm incredibly happy I did. But Telltales shutting down like this is going to, I hope, make people see that the episodic-train should be dead now. And maybe future companies will only focus on the "Here's the whole finished game" (Or at least as much as the age of DLC can call "finished")

It really is too bad, but what can you do? Hopefully all the staff are able to find work elsewhere as being put in that situation without any foreknowledge of what to come just sucks (I'm sure some knew, but it sounds like a fair amount didn't).

It's kind of messed up that the game is still being sold in online stores for full price and no mention that it's going to be cut short, which is sounding most likely now even though they haven't officially said anything. And I don't care how good the next episode is if there's nothing to look forward to after that. I hope I and everyone else who bought this game gets a refund because this is a literal case of releasing an unfinished game.

@SoNin360:

Yeah, you and everyone else who bought this game should go demand your money back from all those guys who've just lost their jobs, you definitley deserve the money more than they do, seeing as they've been selfishly laid off and not finished it.

@risingdawn: I think you forgot to add a /s at the end. People seem to be missing the sarcasm.

@risingdawn: Refunds would be coming from money the customers spent, not the unemployed workers.

It was a sarcastic remark, highlighting the immediate entitlement at the expense of compassion apparant in today's culture, as such critical analysis of the perceived content not only completely misses the point, it also confirms the underlying message.

@risingdawn: It was a poorly conceived remark. Everyone's responses to you didn't confirm your underlying message, but just how poorly conceived it was.

@risingdawn: You act as if the people who've been laid off will be more hurt by people getting refunds which isn't true at all. Yes, it sucks for everyone who lost their job. They've already been screwed over for their work and it's not like the refunds would be coming directly from their pockets. It would also suck if everyone who paid full price for TWD's final season doesn't get some sort of refund if the remaining episodes don't get released.

What's the point if it's an unfinished story? All it'll make me do is feel bad for the loss of the ending.

@mrdinghat: It's just like any TV show or other media cut short. It sucks and not having closure might prevent me at least from watching/playing it, but the rest of the story is still a fun ride.

Reminds me of the show Southland, fantastic show but I don't regret watching it despite there being so much more unfinished. Though it does make me feel bad as well for the lack of closure.

@thomaswmak: Oh, I can definitely understand that sentiment. Though my main issue with that is more to do with waiting for the next season (Which are now days closer to 2-3 years for some of the less run of the mill shows).
