Taking The Longest Journey Home

If the Dreamfall Chapters crowdfunding campaign is a runaway success, April Ryan will once again take center stage in The Longest Journey Home.

What does two million dollars mean to you? Multiple dream homes? Lifetime financial security? A small stake in an NBA team? For Ragnar Tørnquist and Red Thread Games, it means the chance to delve deeper into The Longest Journey universe and finally finish April Ryan’s story, the one began in The Longest Journey.

The Longest Journey Home is the name of the game that would finish April’s story, but its existence depends, at this stage, on Red Thread reaching the stretch goal of two million dollars in its Kickstarter funding of Dreamfall Chapters. It is, perhaps, a long shot. But maybe the promise of another game is enough to inspire even more support, especially given how The Longest Journey Home would return to its roots: it is planned as a 2D point-and-click adventure akin to the original game, rather than as a 3D adventure in the manner of Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters. It would feature hand-painted backdrops, 3D character models, and, of course, a story penned by series creator Ragnar Tørnquist.

No Caption Provided

I caught up with Tørnquist, and started our conversation by asking a very simple question: Why? Couldn’t a single game bring April Ryan’s and Zoë Castillo’s stories to their necessary conclusions? Why not make Dreamfall Chapters some kind of superadventure that allows Red Thread Games to explore both narrative threads in a single project?

“The simple answer is that these are two separate and completely [different] stories, with a very different vibe and tone to them, and very different themes,” says Tørnquist. “The Dreamer Cycle--Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters--is primarily about Zoë, and it's a full 3D, direct control adventure. The TLJ games are just about April Ryan, and they are classic 2D point-and-click adventures. It was important for us to maintain that distinction and feel to the two cycles.”

“Of course, with Dreamfall Chapters we are adding proper point-and-click functionality, so the borders are blurring a bit, but with The Longest Journey Home, we really wanted to conclude April's story with a return to the detailed, high-resolution painted 2D backgrounds, pure point-and-click interface, and classic adventure gameplay.”

A 2D interface doesn’t just mean classic gameplay for nostalgic fans, though: it allows The Longest Journey Home to have a different, slower pace than it may otherwise have. It also works well on mobile phones and tablets, and Tørnquist is certain that the game will find a home on such devices in addition to the PC.

The Longest Journey Home will pick up right where The Longest Journey left off, filling in the 10-year gap unaccounted for in Dreamfall. But it will also extend beyond Dreamfall Chapters and conclude April’s adventure. And that comes as good news to the players that have been so invested in her fate over the last dozen years. April’s a special character, in part because she’s sometimes so--ordinary. As Tørnquist says, “She didn't feel like your typical game heroine: she felt like an actual person, like someone you might know. Someone you'd want to know. She had flaws, she was insecure, she struggled with her newfound powers and her destiny. She had doubts, she was close to giving up, but didn't. She had […] humanity. She had a soul.”

April is also a female protagonist in a medium not exactly known for complex portrayals of women. The role of women in games is a frequent topic of conversation among game players and developers alike--yet Tørnquist never set out to make a popular heroine. April just happened to be the right person, in the right story, in the right game.

"Players don't not play a game because the star is the 'wrong' gender. I don't believe that for a second."

Says Tørnquist, “There wasn't really a conscious decision to have an awesome female star in The Longest Journey. We wanted a character who felt real, and true to our story. She had to have the life she had. She had to be who she turned out to be. The fact that she was also a girl -- I guess that was mostly chance, and also because I enjoy writing female characters. And, yes, maybe a part of it was that I felt there weren't enough female protagonists in games back then. But it was never really a conscious decision to break new ground, a cynical ploy for attention, or anything like that. I wrote her, she felt real, she had a soul, and players loved her. It was that simple, I guess.”

As for developers that profess how difficult it is to write female characters, well, Tørnquist has a few words. “Writing female characters is the same as writing any character--male, alien, giant asexual amoeba. Characters are characters regardless; they have to be real, they have to be interesting, they have to be someone players can love or hate, empathise with or be intrigued by. Maybe all of those.”

“I have never, ever felt that games are less commercial or less appealing because they had female protagonists,” he continues. “Or male ones. Or giant asexual amoeba (there's a market for that, trust me). And don't let anyone tell you differently. Players respond to interesting characters. Players don't NOT play a game because the star is the 'wrong' gender. I don't believe that for a second. If players dislike a lead character, it's because that character is uninteresting, badly written, badly designed--and not based on whether or not they have breasts or a penis.”

“In short: developers do not give players enough credit. And maybe even players don't give players enough credit.”

It all goes without saying that without reaching that stretch goal, Red Thread may or may not have the chance to make The Longest Journey Home. The Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter has been a clear success, but two million dollars? Are The Longest Journey enthusiasts that dedicated? Tørnquist can barely believe Red Thread has gotten as far as it has. “We are flabbergasted that there's even a sliver of a hope,” he says. "Flabbergasted enough to actually use a word like 'flabbergasted'. I was prepared to fight until the very end to reach $850,000--and we did that in a week. We crossed a MILLION dollars by the halfway point. That's amazing! And yeah, two million is a long shot, but we're doing everything we can to spread the word and to get more pledgers. Every step of the way towards The Longest Journey Home will serve to improve the depth, length and quality of Dreamfall Chapters. And if we reach the two million dollar mark, we can greenlight the pre-production on The Longest Journey Home, and get ready to make that game next. And nothing, nothing would make us happier.”

I concluded with the most important question of all: Any chance of a Burns Flipper spinoff? Tørnquist’s response: “Hells yeah.”

And you know, given the runaway success of the Dreamfall Chapters crowdfunding, I’m almost ready to believe it.

I loved the Longest Journey. Second one, not so much. I thought even the bloopers were brilliant, lol. But this does make you wonder where all that Secret World money went?? Just saying, not accusing. And we really need a Grim Fandango 2. Really.

@brxricano The Secret World money went to Funcom. Dreamfall Chapters and hopefully TLJH are being made by Red Thread Games, which is a new company created by former Funcom developers. But they're not getting any funding from Funcom, hence the need for a Kickstarter campaign.

@Illbegotten @brxricano Still, Funcom gave Red Thread the license to do this with no upfront money and even sent out shout outs towards the Kickstarter campaign (newsletter etc.) so Funcom is definitely interested in having Red Thread succeed.

@rainforest1155 RTG and Funcom seem to be a on very good terms, yes. Ragnar has also literally mentioned this a few times. That's a good thing for everybody.

@Retodon8 Of course, Funcom gets a share of the profits. That's what I intended to express with 'no upfront money', but I guess that wasn't clear. So obviously Funcom wants the game to do great as well.

Still, providing Red Thread with the license without any upfront money speaks for the good spirits between Ragnar Tornquist and Funcom.

@rainforest1155 I don't think they just "gave" RTG the license. I recall reading Funcom gets a share of whatever money Dreamfall Chapters makes in one of the earlier interviews or articles about Chapters, or maybe in the live stream. That could also still mean RTG had to pay for the license in some other way(s), but I don't know if either party will make these details public.

It's highly doubtful that they'll make the 2 million mark, BUT they could definitely put up another kickstarter specifically for The Longest Journey Home once they release Dreamfall Chapters, they should have no trouble making whatever they need for their next game.

@TheThoughtless1 Even beyond Kickstarter, they'll keep accepting money via PayPal during the development of Dreamfall Chapters. So there's still plenty of time to get to the 2 Million.

That said, it doesn't mean there won't be another Kickstarter. After all, they said that reaching the stretch goal means it would allow them to go into pre-production with TLJ Home. They'll likely need more money to finish that game (e.g. profits from the Dreamfall Chapters sales).

Kevin, I hope you are serious about this. I am behind you 100% on this one. TLJ was the best adventure game besides Siberia a close second, which was equal. I've told everyone I know about this and we all support it. Next step: Delivery. :)

I've played a lot of games since the mid 90's, but there never has been another game like TLJ... perhaps "Grim Fandango" is close as far as the depth of storyline and character development, but April Ryan is the best written and best vocally acted adventure character around, along with all the people and creatures in both her worlds, IMHO. I've replayed the game so many times over the years and every time I've discovered something new. As far as the chance of getting another game based solely on April and done with traditional point and click and painted 2D, well... have to admit to being wildly excited about the possibility.

That being said, I never felt quite the same way about Dreamfall. Not because of the storylines or the vocal acting, but I don't much care for cliffhangers, so that affected how I felt about the overall game. I've only replayed Dreamfall once or twice after my initial playthrough, but after following the entire ten hours of the "Twitch Play," decided to try again. While still terribly annoyed by the clumsiness of the controls, I found myself enjoying the story much more than I originally did and though I've already pledged more than I can afford, I went ahead and upped it another tier. (curse and bless credit cards) I'll be scrimping for a while until the balance is paid off, but I just gotta have more of the 'Balance.' :)

Thanks very much for the article and certainly hope it will bring in more attention from those who don't yet know the story or those just now finding out about the Kickstarter funding.

Thank you for bringing attention to this, Kevin. I'll never forget TLJ, and Dreamfall remains THE best story every written for a video game. The more of this, the better.

Though having said that, I am a little concerned. I thought they were getting an art fund from the Norwegian government again?

@MooncalfReviews it was a small fund, like 175.000 to make a prototype, which is the one you've seen in the trailer. In order to make a full fledged game and port it to many platforms they need people and money

@burns_flipper @MooncalfReviews I really feel like they need more than they've asked for, but as long as the team stays small and focused, we won't have anything to worry about.

@MooncalfReviews The money for Chapters is coming from several sources (including the government fund, but it's not a huge fund). What is there to be concerned about, though?

The best news! The Longest Journey Home just HAS to be made (and hopefully really really soon rather than after another 6 years or longer, it's just torture!). April is definitely one of the best and realistic characters I've ever encountered. Only I wish there would be even more games with April (and Zoe, because I do love her so much too), but obviously stories have to end some time.

Dreamfall Chapters is coming and there isn't any greater moment than NOW to pledge in the kickstarter. I did since day one (or almost). Come and share this thrill of making this game not only a reality, but proof that quality video games come from the community and not from the minds of big companies that only think of making the almighty buck!

Now if it comes in 2D, no thanks. I'm not buying it. The 3D world of the last gas was so superb, that I wouldn't want it ever in 2D.

@mrexetercity198 Not a very popular opinion, many people love Dreamfall, and I don't even recall anybody giving it a below average score, let alone calling it "awful". You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I have to disagree with the "They should have made TLJ Home first". (Assuming with "of" you meant "have".)

I remember playing through TLJ the first time, ending in an anti-climax yet with untold possibilities and adventures hinted at in the epilogue and I couldn't wait for the sequel. It took a long time, but when it came, I was again immersed in the twin worlds and in the spirit and ambiance of Tørnquist's universe. This time the ending was climactic, but unresolved, still happening and I wanted to know what happened more, I needed to know and the sequel could not come soon enough. Nor did it, of course, as it is just now on Kickstarter. :P However, when reading that they wanted to make the final game in the storyline, finally, I was thrilled - well, as thrilled as my depression would let me, but I felt an echo of the excitement and enjoyment\thrill I had had before as I thought about the twin worlds and I immediately pledged. Right now, I'm really hoping that it reaches at least the next stretch goals, and includes the House of All Worlds, as it was not only a focal point in the story, but also something bigger, more important, yet ephemeral so far, with the added "mystery" of the old woman. (Name and plot details not included to avoid spoilers for newcomers). I have even played through TLJ again and am now in the middle of DTLJ, to recapture that excitement and ambiance while I wait for the released game. My only regret is that I haven't won the lottery and thus am not able to pledge more - nor have I the skill or knowledge to help in the game. Thus, I can only hope that many others, like me, long to experience and immerse themselves in the story\-ies of the Balance!

very good article, and such a great perspective from Ragnar. anyone who has played TLJ knows how amazing seeing this game would be, in some ways the conclusion to April's story is even more important than Zoe's, but I want both (oh boy, I'm gonna be increasing my pledge, again, might have to do this one off the radar...)

Absolutely can't wait, and great article. 2 million is not that big of a long shot. With the surge that usually happens in the last few days, add-ons, and Paypal 1.5 million is almost a sure thing, and 2 mil could happen.

Bad move, IMO. Stretch goals are supposed to enrich the project in question. It looks to me Ragnar felt he had to draw attention because the funding growth stalled after a stellar beginning. But he did it in a bad way, because he made a stretch goal out of something that backers already thought was going to be in the game (April's plot resolution). I hope it doesn't hurt them too much, as I believe they were simply misguided, not dishonest.

I feel like being a huge fan, and as a huge fan I must try. Then we can make sure the 2 stories will come. As fans we always wanted to continue April's story and we were a bit stopped cold but it was hugely refreshing at the same time to play Zoës story as well, now there's double expectation and more TLJ coming, so why wouldn't a fan pledge for it ?

@makryu Not sure about stretch goal money being used to fund a different product. Like I said elsewhere, I'd be happy to pledge again in a new Kickstarter for TLJ Home specifically. That might actually be better, but I really can't say for sure.

As for "something that backers already thought was in the game", that's not quite true. Red Thread Games never suggested that would be the case, actually they specifically mentioned this would be a Dreamfall story, not the conclusion to April's story in a number in places. At least on the Kickstarter project pages this seems to have been common knowledge. Of course many of those people (including me) are putting quite some effort in staying up to date with every little bit of news others might miss.

"With Dreamfall Chapters, we will finally continue the darkly magical story that began in the critically acclaimed and award-winning adventures The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey."

"Play as three different characters, all on journeys across worlds, through life, and into their own hearts and souls"

Two quotes from the kickstarter page. I'm sorry, but there's no way that anyone who played the previous two games, isn't extremely naive, and reads these, doesn't naturally assume April will be a prominent, playable character in Dreamfall Chapters. They clearly contradicted themselves.

@makryu The only playable character they have announced so far is Zoe, and that one is obvious in the sequel to Dreamfall. The original Dreamfall let you play as April for a bit, plus she is the heroine in TLJ, so it's not unlikely she'll be playable for a bit in Chapters as well. She is still the Wave, or will be again. They have announced April's voice actress will be back, but they have also been really secretive about the role she will play. TLJ Home also taking place after Dreamfall means she has to be alive in some form at least, but even before that most people assumed she'd simply be voicing April again. That doesn't say anything about playable character or NPC though.

The past games, specifically Dreamfall indicate it's likely April will be playable, but only as a side character. Everything said by Red Thread Games during this Kickstarter suggested that was a possibility, but really only added doubt to that. I don't know about naivete, but none of the information points to this being an April game. It depends on what you mean "prominent" whether or not I agree with you. Was April a prominent character in Dreamfall?

@makryu I strongly doubt it was because they "felt they had to draw attention". I rather think they got really excited when they saw the numbers rising (seeing as they were prepared to fight until the end of the campaign to get the base goal) and then got more excited about making the last part of the story as well. I never doubted that Ragnar would finish April's story one day, but I was prepared to wait 6+ more years for it after Chapters was done. If it miraculously gets funded now I'll be extremely happy!

Can't wait. Both The Longest Journey and Dreamfall were awesome adventure games. In this Call of Duty era, a fantastic pure adventure game like TLJ will be just about as refreshing as it can get.
