Taking The Longest Journey Home

If the Dreamfall Chapters crowdfunding campaign is a runaway success, April Ryan will once again take center stage in The Longest Journey Home.

What does two million dollars mean to you? Multiple dream homes? Lifetime financial security? A small stake in an NBA team? For Ragnar Tørnquist and Red Thread Games, it means the chance to delve deeper into The Longest Journey universe and finally finish April Ryan’s story, the one began in The Longest Journey.

The Longest Journey Home is the name of the game that would finish April’s story, but its existence depends, at this stage, on Red Thread reaching the stretch goal of two million dollars in its Kickstarter funding of Dreamfall Chapters. It is, perhaps, a long shot. But maybe the promise of another game is enough to inspire even more support, especially given how The Longest Journey Home would return to its roots: it is planned as a 2D point-and-click adventure akin to the original game, rather than as a 3D adventure in the manner of Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters. It would feature hand-painted backdrops, 3D character models, and, of course, a story penned by series creator Ragnar Tørnquist.

I caught up with Tørnquist, and started our conversation by asking a very simple question: Why? Couldn’t a single game bring April Ryan’s and Zoë Castillo’s stories to their necessary conclusions? Why not make Dreamfall Chapters some kind of superadventure that allows Red Thread Games to explore both narrative threads in a single project?

“The simple answer is that these are two separate and completely [different] stories, with a very different vibe and tone to them, and very different themes,” says Tørnquist. “The Dreamer Cycle--Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters--is primarily about Zoë, and it's a full 3D, direct control adventure. The TLJ games are just about April Ryan, and they are classic 2D point-and-click adventures. It was important for us to maintain that distinction and feel to the two cycles.”

“Of course, with Dreamfall Chapters we are adding proper point-and-click functionality, so the borders are blurring a bit, but with The Longest Journey Home, we really wanted to conclude April's story with a return to the detailed, high-resolution painted 2D backgrounds, pure point-and-click interface, and classic adventure gameplay.”

A 2D interface doesn’t just mean classic gameplay for nostalgic fans, though: it allows The Longest Journey Home to have a different, slower pace than it may otherwise have. It also works well on mobile phones and tablets, and Tørnquist is certain that the game will find a home on such devices in addition to the PC.

The Longest Journey Home will pick up right where The Longest Journey left off, filling in the 10-year gap unaccounted for in Dreamfall. But it will also extend beyond Dreamfall Chapters and conclude April’s adventure. And that comes as good news to the players that have been so invested in her fate over the last dozen years. April’s a special character, in part because she’s sometimes so--ordinary. As Tørnquist says, “She didn't feel like your typical game heroine: she felt like an actual person, like someone you might know. Someone you'd want to know. She had flaws, she was insecure, she struggled with her newfound powers and her destiny. She had doubts, she was close to giving up, but didn't. She had […] humanity. She had a soul.”

April is also a female protagonist in a medium not exactly known for complex portrayals of women. The role of women in games is a frequent topic of conversation among game players and developers alike--yet Tørnquist never set out to make a popular heroine. April just happened to be the right person, in the right story, in the right game.

"Players don't not play a game because the star is the 'wrong' gender. I don't believe that for a second."

Says Tørnquist, “There wasn't really a conscious decision to have an awesome female star in The Longest Journey. We wanted a character who felt real, and true to our story. She had to have the life she had. She had to be who she turned out to be. The fact that she was also a girl -- I guess that was mostly chance, and also because I enjoy writing female characters. And, yes, maybe a part of it was that I felt there weren't enough female protagonists in games back then. But it was never really a conscious decision to break new ground, a cynical ploy for attention, or anything like that. I wrote her, she felt real, she had a soul, and players loved her. It was that simple, I guess.”

As for developers that profess how difficult it is to write female characters, well, Tørnquist has a few words. “Writing female characters is the same as writing any character--male, alien, giant asexual amoeba. Characters are characters regardless; they have to be real, they have to be interesting, they have to be someone players can love or hate, empathise with or be intrigued by. Maybe all of those.”

“I have never, ever felt that games are less commercial or less appealing because they had female protagonists,” he continues. “Or male ones. Or giant asexual amoeba (there's a market for that, trust me). And don't let anyone tell you differently. Players respond to interesting characters. Players don't NOT play a game because the star is the 'wrong' gender. I don't believe that for a second. If players dislike a lead character, it's because that character is uninteresting, badly written, badly designed--and not based on whether or not they have breasts or a penis.”

“In short: developers do not give players enough credit. And maybe even players don't give players enough credit.”

It all goes without saying that without reaching that stretch goal, Red Thread may or may not have the chance to make The Longest Journey Home. The Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter has been a clear success, but two million dollars? Are The Longest Journey enthusiasts that dedicated? Tørnquist can barely believe Red Thread has gotten as far as it has. “We are flabbergasted that there's even a sliver of a hope,” he says. "Flabbergasted enough to actually use a word like 'flabbergasted'. I was prepared to fight until the very end to reach $850,000--and we did that in a week. We crossed a MILLION dollars by the halfway point. That's amazing! And yeah, two million is a long shot, but we're doing everything we can to spread the word and to get more pledgers. Every step of the way towards The Longest Journey Home will serve to improve the depth, length and quality of Dreamfall Chapters. And if we reach the two million dollar mark, we can greenlight the pre-production on The Longest Journey Home, and get ready to make that game next. And nothing, nothing would make us happier.”

I concluded with the most important question of all: Any chance of a Burns Flipper spinoff? Tørnquist’s response: “Hells yeah.”

And you know, given the runaway success of the Dreamfall Chapters crowdfunding, I’m almost ready to believe it.

This guy is great. He has some awesome things to say about the female protagonists, and I think what he has to say is very, very true. I don't believe we (players) dislike female protagonists, I just think we're more skeptical that they're not going to be as well written or interesting as typical male protagonists - because we've seen, through experience, female protagonists aren't just... always.... there.

Go Dreamfall!

So let me get this straight: we are talking about 2 games? Dreamfall Chapters (3D adventure game) AND Dreamfall the longest journey home (2D point and click adventure game) ???

@raikiry The Longest Journey sequel certainly does sound like a 2D continuation. Seeing as the gap between the pledge that people can decide what exactly they want and to greenlight TLJ Home is 250,000$, I'm guessing that it'll cost them in that :

Licensing for the game
A pay for every employee to start on the game and work on getting a bit more funds
Voice actor fees
Any costs related to publicising it

Currently I pledged for the 750$ level and I just can't wait to see how far this ''JOURNEY'' will take everyone involved (including myself of course!).

@Soldatoflife Looking at your KS profile was proof enough actually! Kudos to you for backing at such a level. Wish I had the income to justify backing the project to that level, really wish I could because TLJ is one of the computer games that has moved me the most!

I apologize for my rude first reply to you!

Hmmmmm.......I have no clue how to prove you of such a thing...though I could try to find my name in the thousands of people that have pledged already. The best I can do is send you my profile on kickstarter, but it doesn't say how much I put.

Add to the main kickstarter website : /profile/maximegirard

So far I put 750$ + 25$ shipping outside of US fees + 10$ for the extra digital copy of TLJ that I feel like getting, even if I already purchased it for myself physically (ordered from the funcom website a while back) and I'm considering to get two t-shirts.

Sooo.....yeah ^^

If you really wanna see proof, we can somehow arrange that I share a printscreen when I arrive home after work. Around midnight maybe....

Just remind me in a few hours :P

@1337d00d303 No, they already confirmed they want to make TLJ Home, didn't they. When they get that much money, they have enough to make Chapters as good as they could possible imagine, so they can actually start investing in and working on Home afterwards. It doesn't mean they can fully fund Home though. Read the GameSpot article linked in the comments near yours for details.

Tornquist a 3d game needed a 850,000 pledge, and by introducing a 2d point and click game, you are asking 2 million$.

How much does a 2d point ant click game cost? it seems not right

@pakhair I think you may be misunderstanding something. The Kickstarter is for Dreamfall Chapters only. If they reach 2 million, they'll start pre-production on TLJ Home after Chapters is done as a new and separate game. TLJ Home will not be funded with this Kickstarter. They'll probably use money from the sales of Chapters and other sources (perhaps another Kickstarter in the future) to actually make TLJ Home afterwards.

I'm not a game dev but how can 2 million be nearly enough for a game of this scope and ambition? What does it mean - decent salaries for 30 people for a year? Or am I too naive and a 70k a year is way too much in this industry? And that's just salaries. What about rent, equipment, utilities etc.

Does anyone have any insight into these things?

2D games are so much better, because they don't age. You can play the same game 5 or 10 years later and it still is gorgeous, unlike 3D games.

Now I can't wait for both Dreamfall Chapters and TLJH !

The best stories in adventure games will be continued, hurrah !

@cabfe I completely agree. I've just recently played Sanitarium, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island 3 and Darkseed again and loved them! It felt like revisiting childhood memories.

I also tried playing Grim Fandango and Silent Hill (2 of my fave games of the past), but was so disappointed how ugly they look and how awkward they are to play.

@Bordonaro 3D has ruined many game series.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night for instance is infinitely better than any 3D version that has been published to date.

point and click adventures are lovely and they don't work nearly as well in 3D.

I'd take the secret of monkey island 2 or machinarium over any 3D myst game

@Bordonaro It's an artistic decision. April Ryan is a painter, and the games featuring her as the protagonist are 2D with painted backgrounds. It's what defines them.

Besides that, I would be willing to bet there would actually be less pledges if TLJH was another 3D game like Dreamfall Chapters, since anyone interested in that has already pledged. This way, everyone gets at least one game in the style they prefer. So everybody wins.

@Bordonaro I think you vastly understimate how many people loved the original games and are looking forward to this.

And it's not 2D vs. 3D in itself that determines if it's a good and enjoyable game. There're good and bad 3D games just as well as there're good and bad 2D games.

And if you read about the kickstarter figures, exactly WHAT part is not "getting off the ground" here ? The only thing not getting off the ground is whatever point you're trying to make.

@Kayweg Actually it does, specially when its implying first person with point and click.
Many would say it would probably be more enjoyable to freely move around then to click.......click........click........click.....
They may have liked it back then but that was 13 years ago, They can either please a handfull of nostalgia filled players who may or may not still even have interest in point and click or appeal to even more people AND the nostalgia blinded players with free movement they could do so much more around and be a stronger adventure. Theres only like, what.....15k backers?? give or take a few thousand that are even remotally interested compared to a few hundred thousand who would have been interested but arent because point and click is past its age

@Bordonaro As a player, I don't really care about sales numbers... Just on how enjoyable the game is... Gotta say the "best" games tend not to have huge sales numbers, "best" being how much I personally enjoyed the games.

... and as for "nostalgia blinded" it tends to be nostalgic people who give all games a chance and are not blinded half as much as those who wont try something because it's not the same as everything else they play.

@Bordonaro All the TLJ games let you move around freely... depending on what exactly you mean with "freely". None of the games have been, or will be first person (unless a new one gets announced in the future). These are adventure games, so there will be a lot of clicking. Actually I suspect the Diablo games have more clicking. :)

We have first/third person 3D games now, but 2D platformers are still being made, and they are still popular. As an example the sidescrolling Bionic Commando did quite a bit better than the third person one. After TV was invented we still have radio, and even books. Look at the facts before ending your comments with a "lol".

@Bordonaro Oh, and just to avoid any confusion, i'm obviously referring to "The Longest Journey home", because Dreamfall Chapters IS a 3d adventure game...so you couldn't have meant that. And you may still get your wish, as the 2 million mark hasn't been reached. So the game (TLJH) may not even come about.

@Bordonaro Luckily there still is room for niche audiences in this world. And whichever way you want to toss the numbers, apparently their kickstarter campaign is going above expectations.

I suspect if one of the big publishers were to make this game it would have been a mass appeal title in shape of an action game. Probably aimed at the console market, with loads of fancy cutscenes, QTEs, and a rubbish PC port.

And you don't have to be a "nostalgia filled player" to be sick and tired of THAT stuff by now.

In almost every branch of business you could mention, there are companies catering for the mass market and companies specializing on various other groups of customers.

It's called diversity.

And oddly enough they manage to thrive.

I can understand and respect that you would have liked to see a different sort of game.

But you pass judgement on a minority group of gamers who's taste you disagree with, and on top of that you have the cheek to try and tell them what they like and what they don't.

The 2D adventure genre never ceased to exist and it is still brimming with creativity and active players.

I say "Machinarium" and rest my case.

@Bordonaro Who said anything about first person? It doesn't sound like you have not played or even seen anything of the original TLJ. It's a traditional point and click adventure (like Monkey Island) where you direct April Ryan's character through a world of 2D backgrounds. It has nothing to do with first person or how the Myst games played.

I'd suggest that you take a look at YouTube for some gameplay videos.

I would so fund a Burns Flipper Kickstarter! I also can not wait for TLJH, I most certainly am one who would love to play that more than Dreamfall, but I'm patient. I know I will love Dreamfall Chapters in the meantime because Ragnar's storytelling is top notch.

His comment about not playing because the gender of the main character though does depend on the actors I think. Playing Mass Effect, I can't play as the male Shepard. His voice acting just didn't do it for me. And though their stories are very alike, I find the female Shepard's line so much more moving.
