Tactical military shooter Arma 3 will receive a "major" expansion in late 2015, developer Bohemia Interactive announced today as part of a lengthy blog post addressing where the game is headed in the future.

"Pencilled in for late 2015 (and with a lot of work ahead of us!) we're not quite ready to reveal too many precise details about the Arma 3 expansion," creative director Jay Crowe and project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land said. "We're at a stage of development where we want to take some risks, experiment, and innovate!"

"With that in mind, the exact scope of our work will, for now, stay dark and will remain so until we're a bit more confident about what we can truly deliver," the studio added.

This mystery Arma 3 expansion is still in pre-production, Bohemia says. It is likely to include a "range of new sandbox content," as well as a new terrain that is said to offer a "distinctive feeling and gameplay." No other details are available right now.

In addition to the new expansion, Bohemia's Arma 3 "Roadmap 2014/15" includes:

  • Extending the Steam Workshop implementation to support mods.
  • Releasing the Bootcamp update -- Free update will give newcomers a "varied" introduction to the game, while veteran players will find refinements of certain original features.
  • Adding more DLC -- These packages will focus on new sandbox assets, missions, and features. New features will be free, but actual game content will be paid.
  • First DLC is Arma 3 Helicopters - Scheduled for release in second half of 2014. Adds new transport helicopters and new game mechanics.
  • Next DLC is Arma 3 Marksmen -- Adds new weapons and overhauls certain shooting mechanics.

You can read the full Arma 3 "Roadmap 2014/15" blog post at Bohemia's website.

"...we want to take some risks, experiment, and innovate,"

So completely sell out on the fundamentals then? I'm just kidding :).

and that's what I'm referencing- you're right- JUST to unload is simple enough- but, if you want to just get certain crew off- not the pilot and co pilot, you have to go substantially further. Makes little sense to design scenario for drop on hot LZ where they fly in and everybody hops out and starts sauntering around. Sure, it's a whine, but a lot of missions would be easier to make with a simplified feature, so it's a suggestion-- that and and editor command for rapelling would be nice

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am assuming this is in response to mine, but I get what you mean now, I misunderstood you thinking that you were talking about simple transport. I agree with you on that entirely, I felt that some of these things like what you were saying could just be done with just a simple dropdown in the waypoint menu listing what positions were to disembark and what units occupy a position, it would be pretty simple yea.

2015??? that just seems a ways off for an expansion, but ok-- by the by, could they make the map editor simplified when you want to fly in, off load troops or pick up, then fly out just a one click command ( versus the fifteen you have to do now??)

<< LINK REMOVED >> How is that hard? To offload a unit all you have to do is set a waypoint to embark for the unit and then set a waypoint for the transport to unload somewhere. The editor in ARMA is one of the simplest mission editors there is and nearly every ARMA player knows how to use it in the basic forms, now scripting and the like is where it gets complicated.

I will admit that ARMA 3 is definitely getting better and still a lot of fun despite its lack of content, but some of these expansions like the helicopters, the F-35, and the Osprey(both were confirmed a long time ago and have screenshots of them) have been made a long time ago. It is almost pointless for them to create more vehicle expansions at this moment unless they were considering a modern expansion(which I would absolutely grovel at their feet for).

The best thing about this game is with the right know-how you can make your own native expansions not just mods

As cool as this is, I can't help but hear 'We have some great stuff planned, you'll just have to wait at least a year and a half to get it!' Not only that, but with such a long wait I can just see some form of delay hitting them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If history(Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead) is any indication, they are creating an entire new map. A map that just as big as Altis, if not bigger. Hell yeah it's going to take a long time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I dislike the idea of them adding more stuff, just that I wish companies would stop announcing things so far in advance because then it means ages of waiting for the consumer.
