Switch's Monster Hunter XX Reveal Boosts Nintendo's Rising Stock To 8-Year High

Investors sure are excited about Monster Hunter on Switch.

47 Comments

If you needed further proof of Monster Hunter's immense influence in Japan, the mere announcement that the series is coming to Nintendo Switch caused Nintendo to experience another jump in market value (via CNBC).

Following the news that Capcom would be bringing Monster Hunter XX to Switch, Nintendo's share price rose 5.48% to ¥33,510 ($301.27). Nintendo's stock had already been trending upward; earlier in the week, the company hit a seven-year high thanks in part to strong demand for Switch. This latest jump has now put the company's market value at its highest point since October 2008.

No Caption Provided

Monster Hunter XX is an expanded version of Monster Hunter Generations, featuring a host of additional monsters, weapon sets, quests, and other content. Monster Hunter XX released for 3DS back in March, but it has so far remained exclusive to Japan. Capcom hasn't announced whether it will be localizing the title for either console, but the publisher has released other recent installments like Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and the aforementioned Generations here in the West. Capcom is also bringing the 3DS role-playing off-shoot Monster Hunter Stories to the US later this year.

It's also unclear if 3DS players will be able to transfer their Monster Hunter XX save data over to the new Switch version, though it wouldn't be the first time Capcom offered that luxury to fans; players could freely transfer their saves between the 3DS and Wii U versions of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate using a special app available on the eShop.

Capcom will be revealing more details on the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX during the Monster Hunter Championship event on May 27.

I dont see anything unclear about that, they already said possible transfer between 3ds and switch save data in the trailer.

@zinten: which has to be using a 3rd party source, Switch and 3DS don't connect to each other, but can connect to the same server, which is likely how the save transfer is going to work.

I don't see any promise of an English version of this. So, at this point, I'm going to hope that Dauntless will fill that void left by Japanese only and mobile only versions of MH.

@Sepewrath: Even if it does, I don't think I'll bother getting a Switch just for this game. There's an untapped market on PC for this kind of game, and Dauntless is looking to fill that.

I thought about borrowing my brother's 3DS for one of the mobile MH's, but he just got Fire Emblem (so no chance of that anytime soon lol).

@zinten: I know. But right now the main thing that you'll be able to spend $ on is customization. As long as it's not p2w, I'll give it a shot.

I won't lie. When I read about MHXX coming to Switch this morning , I wanted to go buy one immediately. Had to take a deep breath and think more rationally. Still need more info on the game. This is a good start... but it's not enough. I need MORE information. MORE knowledge! My brain hungers for more information!

@AccursedGamer: I thought the same thing. I was cursing Nintendo when I saw this. The only reason I bought a Wii U was for MH3U...and I certainly got my money's worth there! I can't stand playing an MH game on hand-held; though I still buy them, because...what choice do I have?

Like you, I took a deep breath and realized that the amount of time that it would take to bring this game to the West is probably 18+ months. And, ultimately, the graphics are going to be sub-standard (IMHO). As fun as the gameplay is in EVERY single MH game I have played, I really wish Capcom would do this series justice (graphically) and move to a new engine...and provide a true next-gen MH experience.

@AccursedGamer: also this is a game originally made for 3ds. They will surely develop one from the ground up for the switch.

@ballashotcaller: Yeah, and how long will we have to wait for that?? 10 years?? If Capcom were seriously considering developing an MH game from the ground up, don't you think it would be best to look at a "real" console to release it on? How I long for the days of an MH title coming back to Playstation.

And then it will drop when MH5 is announced as a PS4 exclusive at E3 lmao. Still though, MH will be great on the switch due to the better controls.

@Prats1993:

I don't see why Capcom would do that. The PS4 isn't even selling that great in Japan. The Vita has more sales in Japan than the PS4 does.

I could see them putting it on PS4, but it is likely that they would make it PS4 and Switch. If they do make it exclusive I'm sure it would be the best looking Monster Hunter though!

Persona 5 is on PS3 as well :). Besides, what other console would get Persona 5? The Wii U? The main series has been exclusive to PlayStation since number 2.

Did you read the rest of my point? Also, I never said that games don't sell on the PS4. I just said that the number of PS4 systems sold in Japan is less than what Capcom is used to with the PSP, PS2, PS3, Wii, and 3DS. Monster Hunter seems to sell best as a portable title too (because it is most popular in Japan who love portable products). They've actually sold the worst on Playstation's home consoles, so why would Capcom limit themselves to JUST the PS4?

Could they release it on the PS4? Yeah! As an exclusive? I doubt it. It is a pretty baseless rumor, honestly.

Okay, could you please read my comments again?

Monster Hunter is most popular in Japan (by a lot). It is also most popular as a portable title (the PSP and 3DS editions have drastically outsold the console versions on average). The PS4 has sold around 4-5 million in Japan. The 3DS has sold around 21-22 million in Japan.

Unless Monster Hunter becomes much more popular in western markets (and on consoles) Capcom would be severely limiting possible sales by releasing it exclusively to the PS4.

Feel free to :). I don't see why you would want to wish something like this to be an exclusive though. I'd prefer more people get to experience a good title than less.

Japan (unsurprisingly) has really gotten the best view of Switch success, with this announcement and Dragon Quest heroes 1+2 as well as all the western line up, coupled with the Japanese love of handhelds it's small wonder the Switch is taking over.

The launch window has been alot kinder to our oriental cousins, here's hoping we eventually get the love over here too.

Speakers = ALL your media sources are better.

Switch = handful of new games, on your existing speakers.

Core components should not be under-valued!

@DarkblueNinja:

This particular game I don't think we will see on PS4. However, I wouldn't doubt that they could make Monster Hunter 5 for the PS4. I'd prefer a PS4 and Switch release for the next Monster Hunter, but either or would be fine by me.
