Sunset Overdrive Sequel Could Happen, If The Right Publisher Comes Along

The more games that let the 90s vomit all over them, the better.

Insomniac's wildly vulgar and flamboyantly artistic Sunset Overdrive could very well get a sequel in the future, but there's a catch: it will only happen if the studio can get adequate support.

Studio founder and CEO Tim Price said during a Twitch live stream that Sunset Overdrive 2 is something he sees fans want. And it could be a thing in the future, but only if there's a publisher willing to bring it to fruition.

No Caption Provided

"Sunset is something that I know a lot of our fans talk about wanting to see the sequel," Price said. "We need a partner for that. That's a big game; Sunset 2 would be a very large-scope game."

Although Microsoft was the publisher behind Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac retains ownership of the IP, allowing it to decide its future. Despite still needing significant publisher support, the sequel could go a number of different directions, including losing its Xbox One exclusivity if Microsoft backs out. And considering we haven't heard anything yet about a potential sequel and Price's hinting at needing a publisher, it seems like Microsoft isn't currently interested in a sequel.

No not a second one... they try to cash in on the zombie thing that was kinda big then and they got burn for it... Now the zombie thingy is all but dead..

another publisher would be silly to help fund a second and selling little over 1mil copies for this game IS a flop..

These guys are talented guys so you know the dev cost was mid range for this type of game, then u add marketing..... I'll go out on a limb here and say it it probably braked even or pull in a tiny profit

I'm a Xbox centric guy but own everything. And it's sad b

To say but I wish SO was a PS4 exclusive. The game would then get the props and review scores it deserved. Would have been a Smash hit. Way too much negativity around MS and bias ruined things.

Nintendo should publish the next sunset overdrive, make it a switch exclusive and appoint suda 51 as the director. Nintendo could always use more mature ip's and sudas style is a perfect fit for sunset overdrive 2.

Phil from MS don’t want sunset Overdrive anymore so guess 2nd game might come to playstation 4 or ninendo switch. Phil smart ass since he don’t like single player games. To me sunset Overdrive 2 could be single player game as well as multiplayer game.

While they're waiting around for this resolution, how's about they get a nice 4K X patch out the door of the first game and let those us of waiting for the best experience play it.

Considering the less than abundant lineup of games MS has, you'd think they'd be all over this. The first game was a blast. What's the problem MS?

First they should port the first game to other platforms to make the ip more popular. It still boggles me how the first game flopped so hard. Why do xbots hate good games???

@Sozialminister: It sold over a million copies, putting it in the same boat as PS4 exclusives like Nioh, Nier and Last Guardian. Does that mean Ponies hate good games too, or were those just bad games?

@sealionact: Sunset overdrive did not sell a million copies. A simple google search reveals it sold really poorly. The only reason a lot of people played it later was because it was free with games with gold on the Xbox.

@crusadernights: 1.16 Million to be exact. Simple google search, as you mentioned.

Physical sales only - so not bundled, digital nor free downloads. It was still disappointing because MS hoped it would be a system seller.

@sealionact: the PS4 has double the units sold xbox has, yet all their exclusive with the exception of the Uncharted series only sell in between 1M or a little over 2M units. Phoines are always bragging about exclusive but in reality only a few actually buys them. (and i say a few in comparison with the amount of units sold that's only 5% of the market actually buys PS exclusive)

@crusadernights: It sold 1 million copies. You denying it won't change that. A million copies for a brand new IP is not bad. The Order sold 1.76 million and it was hyped beyond belief. Your idea of a flop is not the same as others. I'd be happy selling a million of anything. Bloodborne despite it's high score and all around praise only sold 2.79 million. Not every game sells as well as COD. And don't forget, PS4 install base is roughly 4 times that of Xbox. So it would seem per console, this game did better by install base than Bloodborne and The Order since there are 4 times as many potential customers on PS4.

@bdrtfm: It's funny how Sony considers Bloodborne to be this big success when other publishers touting games with more sales are giving up on singleplayer games entirely.

Well, I'd be fine with anyone really to publish the sequel so long as they aren't the Triumvirate of Evil.

@moose3469: I'd say Warner Bros. and Konami are worse than EA (for the most part), but I guess we'll see.....

And Activision has got to be the third option, easily.

@moose3469: Activision. No way I'm buying games that has microtransactions based on games being rigged so you have to buy them in order to to progress.

Sunset OD was a great game. Ms are just too stupid and dont know how to grow game libraries. Just because it didnt sell 10 million at the beginning of the console lifecycle...

LOL at some people. MS could not buy Sony. I dont know what fantasy world you live in but in terms of just assets , MS hold an edge of only 240 billion to about 155 billion for Sony. Sony is smaller than MS but not honestly by that much, its a multi national multi industry conglomerate, its not small enough to the point anyway they could feasible buy them outright, any deal would likely have to be merger (which is more akin to a dissolution of both companies into one uber company). I feel like Americans kind of lose touch with reality sometimes. Nintendo would probably be a for feasible purchase with assets of around 40 billion.

I do with some of the other comments, Sunset was pretty much the only legitmate exclusive that MS had. Sunset is basically reminds me of Saints Row, its a parody of GTA, and a good one at that. Everything else was on the PC. Id like to see another game with some more focus on the story.

@divinejester: Assets?

You want to measure a company's worth on the account of how many chairs and vehicles it has rather than the actual revenue and profitability?

And why would Microsoft buy Sony? Another one would step up and I guess MS is pretty content with Sony since MS is easily the most profitable of both.

@divinejester:Much larger companies are being bought and sold all the time. It will never happen but, to say MS couldn't do it is way off the mark. They could do it, but they never will as, what would be the point? MS and Sony understand you need competition to stay competitive and thrive. It's only the fanboys who say MS or Sony are not needed in the industry and should die. I mean for a whole year Sony fans honestly believed MS was going to get rid of the Xbox brand and I've never seen a more excited group of people. They just don't understand business. At all.

@divinejester: Erm.... "Sony is smaller than MS but not honestly by that much" that is just fundamentally wrong. Sony's total assets amount to $148 billion, Microsoft's are $241 billion. Only nearly $100 billion more.....net income of $650 million to Microsoft's $21.2 billion. It far far bigger and (more importantly) more efficient. But you are right that Microsoft couldn't buy out Sony.

@divinejester: thought nintendo had smaller assets at around 20billion. They did a really good job not getting swallowed up by sony or microsoft or big conglomerates.
