Suicide Squad Box Office Falls, But Not as Much as Batman v Superman

Still No. 1

After its record-setting first weekend, Suicide Squad took in around $43.77 million at the US box office this weekend. That's down a steep 67 percent and below expectations.

However, the DC Comics movie's second-weekend dropoff is not quite as dramatic as Batman v Superman's. That movie's box office receipts dove 69 percent back in March for its second weekend.

Despite the dropoff, Suicide Squad remained the No. 1 movie at the US box office this past weekend, according to Deadline, which supplied all the figures. The film broke a number of records for an August release, in particular shattering Guardians of the Galaxy's previous opening-weekend record.

Suicide Squad has now made more than $465 million worldwide against a budget of $175 million, according to Box Office Mojo. A sequel is apparently already on the way.

The No. 2 movie this past weekend was the animated comedy Sausage Party, which cooked up $33.6 million for its opening. According to Deadline, this raunchy comedy "stole a big chunk" of Suicide Squad's holdover crowd during late-evening hours.

Additionally, it probably didn't help that American Olympian Michael Phelps swam in his final races this weekend, which may have kept some from going to the movies.
