The first trailer for Mortal Engines, the new sci-fi/fantasy movie from some of the key creative minds behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, is premiering soon. Peter Jackson confirmed in a Facebook post that a teaser trailer for the film will play worldwide in front of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens this weekend.

Christian Rivers, who worked on Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, will make his feature film directorial debut with the project. Rivers won a Visual Effects Oscar for his work on another Jackson project, King Kong. Production took place this year in New Zealand, where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were made.

The script for Mortal Engines was adapted by Philippa Boyens, who was part of the writing team for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Jackson and his team have had the movie rights to Mortal Engines for many years now, so it's exciting to finally see it come together.

In the book Mortal Engines, which was written by Philip Reeve, all of Earth's major cities are mounted on wheels, moving across the global as "Traction Cities." The bigger cities hunt down and consume the smaller ones as part of what Jackson calls "Municipal Darwinism." In this backdrop, the movie will tell an "original and emotional personal story," according to Jackson.

Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, the props and effects studios that worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, are also contributing to Mortal Engines. Hugo Weaving, who played Elrond in The Lord of the Rings, will star in Mortal Engines, while Avatar Actor Stephen Lang is also playing a big role.

Jackson released a stunning piece of concept art for Mortal Engines earlier this year; check it out in the embed above. The film is due out at an unspecified date in 2018.

As for The Last Jedi, the movie opens widely on December 15. You can read GameSpot's Last Jedi review here.
