Star Wars Films Were "Too Much, Too Fast" Says Disney Boss

A little less of a galaxy far far away.

Disney obtained the rights to Star Wars in 2012, and since the release of The Force Awakens in 2015 we've had a new Star Wars feature film every year. Disney CEO Bob Iger now thinks that was a little too much of a good thing, and said the studio plans to slow down their pace of releases.

"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made--I take the blame--was a little too much, too fast," Iger told The Hollywood Reporter. "You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about. And we are just at the point where we're going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s. But I think we're going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."

Now Playing: Awesome Star Wars Cosplay At Silicon Valley Comic Con 2017

Disney has been keen on producing anthology films to supplement its tent-pole episodic releases, with "A Star Wars Story" subtitle signaling the difference. So far those have been Rogue One and Solo. Reports have been swirling about other anthology movies in the pipeline, including ones featuring popular characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett. It seemed likely that the current tempo of Star Wars releases would continue well into the future, but Solo disappointed at the box office, which appears to have caused Disney to reevaluate.

The company still seems to be forging ahead on the small screen, however. It just wrapped up the successful run of Star Wars Rebels and is planning to launch the new animated series Star Wars: Resistance next year. That's on top of a new live-action series from Iron Man director Jon Favreau, which is set to headline the company's new streaming service. And of course, the untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is still scheduled for December 2019.

The Obi Wan idea is great.

The Boba Fett idea is good, and should effectively be a sequel to Solo (starring that whole cast, and leading to a movie called Lando).

BUT they need to take their time. Rogue One was great because of delays and reshoots. Solo was obviously made much better by delays and reshoots. New "serious" Directors took over in both cases. But "more time" in both cases were crucial.

Episode 8 COULD have been an amazing movie if they had stopped to just THINK about those few truly stupid scenes, and had they delayed to edit & reshoot them.

No, VIII was just terrible, and now we don’t want to see your next flop. Also, VIII needs to be like Highlander 2, written over like it doesn’t exist.

There's also the fact that these new Star Wars films are intrinsically mediocre.

@bouchart: Ah, yes. Typically Hollywood executive, blaming everything but the quality of their films for their poor performance.

I would just ask Disney, and yes I understand it's a business, but don't be so schedule driven that you don't give the creators the time to make a good movie. JJ Abrams asked for extra time for his first one and was refused. It seemed rushed. Instead of an original story we get... "let's see the Death Star was popular how about a... Death Star Planet!!!" D'oh.

Then my biggest issue is that for a trilogy have the darn story mapped out. This, "make up what you want" style of movie making is insane. Instead of clues planted in film one being revealed in film 3 and blowing our minds we get, "okay, don't know what to do with that character, let's kill 'em.... That mystery hinted at, yea, not into that, her parents were nobody..."

How about giving the characters a nice arc? I have nothing against Laura Dern, she played the role she was hired for. But that would have been played so much better by Admiral Ackbar. He should have been in that hot seat trying to save the rebellion.

And so on...

Star Wars can easily survive on a movie a year, but as others have pointed out, they have to be good. Marvel seems to be nailing it.

While over saturation is most certainly a thing, I think I could have lasted a little longer in the Disney Star Wars era if they were just better movies.

Wrong lesson learnt. Just make good movies and you would have been fine. No one cared that Infinity Wars came out 4 months after Black Panther, because they were good.

@driveinns: The "star wars story" problem is those films didn't fill in any blanks. They instead told stories we already knew. Those films should have been fleshing out the new trilogy universe. Marvel uses the stand alones to flesh out characters to prepare for the big even films. That's what makes them worth coming out for.

@driveinns: A stand alone luke film detailing what happened before TLJ would have really helped. Not doing a knights of Ren film is such a missed opportunity it will be felt throughout the force for all time.

Should have written all 3 films at once, instead of having Abrams vision destroyed by Rian Johnson.

The Force Awakens was New Hope, Rogue One was a nice popcorn turn off your brain movie with no stakes, haven't seen Solo, and Last Jedi was on par if not worse than the prequels. That movie was just so dumb.

Not much hope for episode IX, but I'll probably pay to see it either way.

@raizen3: Abrams vision? You mean, all mystery, no answers Abrams? He left Rian with a huge mess to figure out that doesn't contradict the first film. If you really think about why would Luke not want to be found and to be on an island, there aren't many answers outside of old man who wants nothing to do with the world. I would honestly love to see you try and do better.

@Bread_or_Decide: You do realize he had 2 movies to answer said mysteries right? 2 whole 2 and half, 3 hour movies to tie up loose ends.

Is not like he had 2 mins to wrap up his version of the story. You create a whole new universe in one film only for someone else to come and destroy it the next one. Seems like your solution is: lets just erase everything Abrams did in the first one.

Snoke amounting to jack-sheeet is what boggles me the most.

By the way thats what I meant with they should have written all 3 at once.

@raizen3: Well, I think some of them were rightly answered in the second film, you can't stretch these things out too far. They were already speculating to death after Episode 7. Star Wars characters are notorious for being introduced and killed. Boba Fett, Darth Maul, The emperor. Snoke fits in with them. I don't know why people are so hung up on Snoke. They're the ones who made him so important. The films barely spent any time with him, what's with this obsession to make him a central character. He's merely there so that Kylo can take the throne and be a bigger threat in part 9.

@Bread_or_Decide: Sure the emperor was not important.

There's some speculating going on here it seems.

Hey more power to you if you liked it, and good for you and your reasoning of why Johnson undid everything Abrams set up.

I myself did not like it. How could you like a movie where they made Luke Skywalker the sweetest and more honorable guy in Star Wars who turned Darth freaking Vader, think about killing his sisters son, his nephew. Lol even Mark Hamill hated it.

But good for you, your money was well spent.

@raizen3: I don't agree with everything they did with Luke. The grumpy old man on the island made sense. Throwing the light saber made sense. Wanting to kill Kylo would have been better if Luke had been able to see Han's death coming. It would have better justified his almost killing of Kylo. But to be fair he did stop himself from doing it. We all have moments of weakness. I guess turning bland vanilla luke into a complex three dimensional person was a mistake. But hey, at least Yoda was the same.

They haven't made a bad SW film yet with TLJ being second only to Empire, Solo has been the weakest of the new stuff but even that was an enjoyable film and way better than anything in the prequels but I would be fine with them slowing down a bit.

@NorseLax09: sorry buddy. The differences to you might make you feel like you passed a quiz but in reality they are based on the same...buckle up for this... Leftist Ideology. That only killed hundreds of millions of people via facism/sjw/PC and government control/communism/socialism. Technical differences don't do much in reality unless you're more concerned with sucking up to a socialist professor... They tend to say Venezuela wasn't "real" socialism. Cause it failed.
