Star Wars Celebration Cancelled, Will Skip 2021

Star Wars Celebration is the biggest event for fans of the blockbuster franchise, and this year's convention was originally set to take place in August, in Anaheim, California. It has now been announced that it won't take this place this year, and there won't be another Celebration until 2022.

The news was confirmed on StarWars.com, the series' official site. A statement reads "At Star Wars Celebration, the health and safety of our fans, attendees, exhibitors, guests and staff is always our number one priority. Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 virus and in speaking with local and state authorities on the latest public health guidelines related to indoor conventions, we have made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020."

It isn't surprising that the event has been cancelled, given all other major conventions this year have also met the same fate, including San Diego Comic-Con. However, fans will be disappointed that Celebration is to skip 2021 entirely. The next Star Wars Celebration will take place in Anaheim on August 18-21, 2022.

Fans who have bought tickets to this year's Celebration will be able to transfer their tickets to the 2022 event, or receive a refund. Those who take the transfer will be rewarded with a "free exclusive Star Wars Celebration stormtrooper character pin." Lucasfilm has traditionally used Celebration to launch and promote its upcoming Star Wars movies and shows. The two year wait for the next convention suggests that it could be a while before we see any new Star Wars releases, beyond the upcoming Mandalorian Season 2. There are numerous series and films in development, including the long-awaited Obi-Wan and Cassian Andor series, but none of these have started production yet. Another potential reason for the delay is because Disney's D23 convention is set to take place in Anaheim next year.
