Star Citizen's Single-Player Game, Squadron 42, Delayed Out of 2016

No new release date was provided.

Squadron 42, the standalone single-player game spinoff of Star Citizen, will not be out this year as previously planned.

A delay for the game--which was originally set to be a mode within Star Citizen before being spun off on its own--was announced at the recent CitizenCon 2016 fan event. Creator Chris Roberts described Squadron 42 as having "significantly grown from when it was first pitched in 2012." He laid out the scope of the project and its story and talked about what still needs to be done. Despite what had been said previously, developer Cloud Imperium Games wasn't ready to show off a mission, which he acknowledged as a "bit of a bummer."

He then talked about wanting to do the game right, claiming that the crowdfunding model, which has raised over $127 million, allows it to do so. "We want to do it right. It's really important to do it right," he said. "What we're enabled to do by you guys is to do it right. Because if we were in the typical situation with a publisher, they would say, 'Well, no, you've got to make the Christmas [release] window; you've got to get it out. You can do some patches and the DLC and don't worry about the people who won't think it's quite as polished and it's got a bunch of bugs.'"

This served as a long-winded preface to the delay news. "As much as we wanted to have Squadron 42 for this year, it's not going to be this year. Because from the polish we need to do, it still needs a bit more time." He then promised to show a completed, polished mission "in the near future." He suggested that could happen before the end of the year, but he wouldn't commit to that time frame. He also didn't provide a new date for Squadron 42, which was at one point expected out last fall.

During the presentation, Roberts also detailed future updates to Star Citizen, including the 3.3 update that will add farming, among other content. Later, at the 1:25:20 mark of the video above, a demonstration was shown of the game's procedural generation of planets. This included a segment with a giant sand worm at the 1:54:28 mark.

Star Citizen remains unreleased almost four years after its crowdfunding campaign first began, though modular components of it have been offered to the public. One backer recently received a refund after complaining to California's Attorney General.

It's certainly disappointing that Squadron 42 has been delayed until sometime in 2017. I'm not surprised, because CIG is fairly transparent with the game's development so the lack of Squadron 42 previews was indicative that it wasn't ready yet. As I said, I'm disappointed, but I'm not concerned. The game will be 4 years in development this November and it's common for AAA games to take 5 years to develop from established game devs like Bethesda, Bungie, Rockstar -- whereas CIG is a start-up. Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are ambitious games and to be fair the release schedule wasn't realistic to begin with. Alarmists and haters can criticize that CIG "lied" and failed to deliver the game according to the release schedule, but these things happen. Countless video games, movies, and books (Game of Thrones) have been delayed, and more times than not they're worth the wait. So I'm still looking forward to playing Squadron 42 and Star Citizen in the next year or two.

@reavern: Yeah, super transparent still showing a 2016 release for date SQ42 on their webpage deceiving customers. This is fraudulent advertisement and borderline criminal.

They knew for a long time that they will not make a release this year if they have not even a single mission to show. I hope the authorities step in and put them in front of a judge where these criminals belong.

Had a dream where I sold my van and donated my entire life savings of $76.31 to Star Citizen, which forced me to live on the streets. After 15 years a letter appeared saying "Star Citizen has been canceled and we spent your money on strawberry daiquiris. So long sucker!" What a nightmare - hope I never make that same mistake in real life.

the troubled development of this game is far more interesting than the game itself at this point.

a fascinating read:

@Xristophoros: theres 3 articles but it does have a positive outlook for the game in the last one and basically they couldnt find any misappropriation of money like roberts using backer funds to buy Porsches and mansions like Smart said so yeah. It will get there just harder to wait as people have known about it from the start

yeah.....we already knew this before the presentation because of all the new tech they are working on which is near release, they need this for the single player as well.

They console plebs who are trolling are the same idiots who will be whining when ubishaft and activision release their next games with a ton of bugs and then proceed to sell DLC to them.

@thegoodhustler: You mean like StarCitizen that is now a Minimal Viable Product and has more bugs than you can count with 64bit precision?

I don't understand why so many gaming news websites decided to make their header for their Citizen Con content articles titled "Squadron 42 delayed" as if that was the big news of the show lol. Any backer would have been able to tell you that 6 months ago that they were not getting SQ42 done this year.

What WAS interesting that they showed was the new planetside, but who cares about that when you can frame the entire story in a negative light in the headline so you can get all the drama clicks from the r*tards wanting the project to fail.

@madcat_mikie: If the website says 2016 release and deceives customers when they very well knew for probably the whole year that they never ever going to release a full game this year then that is an appropriate headline. It should actually say: "SQ42 falsely advertised through 2016. Customers deceived and lied to. Investigations of fraudulent advertisement needed"

@malibutomi: That TOS is not enforceable in European countries and will not stand up in court. The webpage clearly sells pre-orders incl. VAT of 2 games, StarCitizen and SQ42, with the latter having a 2016 release date visible on their marketing page. This is fraudulent advertising as they are well aware that a release is not going to happen in 2016. Legal action needs to be taken and these fraudsters need to be brought in front of a judge.

@thedailystream: There are no "customers". Not a single copy of Star Citizen has been "sold". Backers are entitled to what they pledged, and nothing else. That also means they are not entitled to a date in which they get said pledged items.

They have also never "advertised" before either. They show their stuff, the BACKERS advertise it. No money has gone into marketing.

@madcat_mikie: I guess the webpage with the huge store and multiple advertisement videos do not count as marketing in your world.

If you go to their webpage it says you buy StarCitizen or SQ42 incl. VAT. It's a standard legal purchase that qualifies as a pre-order and no TOS or EULA can change that.

@kyelo: Its a valid point i have a friend who is well into this game, he tells me how much these ships go for and get resold for, you may be able to pay $45, but id be guessing thats the lemon of space ships (does that 45 also come with insurance?) i get your point you can pay for what you want, but some of these ships go for ridiculous money in US dollars, and the game isnt even out yet.

@wretch1d: Yes, the starter ship you receive with the $45 game package isn't great, but that's true for every video game, including $60 games. What game, be it a FPS, RPG, RTS, MMO, racing, or flight sim, do you start the game with the best or even mid-range gear? No, the player always starts with the shittiest, lowest level gear there is and has to play and progress to earn better stuff. Star Citizen is exactly the same. The only difference is that there are a few starter game packages so the player gets to decide what ship they start the game with. If the player wants to start with a better ship they have the option of purchasing a more expensive game package. However, CIG has hammered home the point that every ship that can be purchased for $$ can be purchased using in-game currency earned by playing the game.

I'm a Star Citizen backer and in addition to pledging to support the game's development, I bought better pledge ships because I don't want to grind for countless hours to acquire a decent ship. After wasting $60 on No Man's Sky, I know how much I hate grinding because it's tedious, repetitive, and frustrating. I've willingly paid $125 for a Hornet game package, which will allow me to engage in combat missions from Day 1, instead of starting with an Aurora or Mustang and having grind -- or getting p0wned if I was foolish enough to try combat missions in a starter ship.

I acknowledge that the high-level ships are ridiculously expensive. However, considering that some people spend hundreds of dollars on GD'd freemium mobile games or for Chinese gamers to level up their WoW characters, relatively speaking, it's not so ridiculous. IMO it's ridiculous that men are expected to spend 3 month's salary to attach a shiny piece of carbon to their girlfriend's finger...

@wretch1d: they go for big money because they don't want every d!ck and his dog to own every bloody ship in the game before release. they need it balanced, hence why they put a high price on the big ships. the smaller ships have much much lower prices because they don't mind if everyone owns those.

Its better if they take the time to make the game right instead of rushing it out the door cause people demanded it and then have an unfinished buggy game. I've already set my expectation for the release of Star Citizen to be somewhere in the 2017 - 2018 window. I wanna play a good space sim game. There's a huge gap of these types of games in the gaming industry. Star Citizen has a big ambition but they're slowly reaching that one step at a time.

Chris Roberts is a perfectionist. He doesn't cut corners. It shows in the game so far. His ambition, determination as well as RSI dev team's hard work will pay off soon enough and at the end of the day, we gamers will get to enjoy a revolutionary space sim game since the times of Wing Commander, Freelancer, X3 etc.

@nl_skipper: That is fair, but i don't think you understand how game development works if you think it is taking too long for either SC or 2077 to come out.

2077 was announced WAY too early for sure, and half way through development they took people off the team to help finish The Witcher 3, but from the sheer scope that it sounds like they are putting into 2077, it was probably going to take a long time anyways (which is a GOOD THING... unless you are a fan of Ubisoft's game every year kind of content quality...).

Same with Star Citizen. They don't have a publisher telling them they need to release for the holiday market, so they will take their time and make the best game possible instead. I expect both titles to release some time in 2018. Squadron 42 however (the singleplayer of Star Citizen) will be out some time in 2017.

I wasn't expecting it until Xmas 2017(be about 5 1/2 years development)anyway so I am down with that, get it more polished.

I've been playing the modules on and off for while now, it looks superb so really can't wait.

Why release a game that will get an average score through "not finished" comments when you can just drag it out and keep the cash train going - woo! woo!

Really wanna play it but don't wanna bother until it's done, same way I don't go into a restaurant, pay the bill and get some half cooked food and a list of what I'll be getting next week if I bother to come back.

It's been pretty easy to understand that for the longest while. This plan had been abandoned long ago, it is quite easy to see from keeping up with it. Though 2.6 is starting to look like the shaping up point where we can really get closer to having SQ 42.
