Star Citizen Developer Wants to Reinvent the FPS

Star Citizen, that ludicrously successful crowd-funded project, isn't just a space flight simulator. The developer, Roberts Space Industries is also creating a first-person shooter to accompany the space combat segments. In a new developer blog post, the team outlined some of its key changes to the FPS formula to improve "realism."

Standard FPS games, the post says only have two combat stances. One holds the player avatar's gun near the shoulder at all times while the other simulates careful aiming down the sights of the gun. Roberts says this isn't realistic and instead proposes a three stance system to improve balance.

The HUD in lowered stance.

With the new system, players will have to manage a gun in a lowered position, in a ready position, and in an "aim down sights" position. The addition of a third stance allows for a clearer distinction between players that have a gun ready to fire at a moment's notice (as they are in the typical first-person shooter), and those that have their gun at ease to making moving around an area easier. This more accurately simulates real combat stances and will force players to be much slower and more careful when engaging in combat. That sounds complicated, but Roberts says that most of this system will be handled automatically.

"Sprinting or using contextual navigation initiates the Lowered stance," the post says. "Moving slowly and deliberately keeps your weapon in the Ready stance. When in the Lowered stance (entered by sprinting or using contextual navigation), pressing the Fire button will bring you back into the Ready stance. When in the Ready stance, pressing the Aim button brings you into the Aim Down Sight stance. Releasing the held button returns the weapon to the Ready stance."

Roberts is also adding a new system for breathing and stamina to help reinforce a system of stat trade-offs between different kinds of weapons and armor. Heavier gear will drain players of stamina more, causing them to breath more heavily which, in turn, makes their aim more erratic. Players, much like real soldiers, will have to be careful so that they don't end up tiring their avatars. For the best aim, they'll also need to fire at the tops and bottoms of breaths to ensure that the chest isn't moving when they're shooting.

Roberts says that this will provide more balance and a refocused approach to shooting in games. "This is intended to slow the pace of combat, so that it feels more tactical and reinforces our intention that survival takes consideration, rather than random firing."

These features will be included along with the introduction of the FPS module code-named "Star Marine." There is no concrete date for Star Marine.

In any case, Star Citizen has raised more than $77 million, making it by far the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind to-date.

Am I just missing anywhere quoting Roberts wanting to reinvent the FPS? Or is this just a sensationalist article title.

I ended up backing Star Citizen awhile ago. I will say that they have/are doing a great job with everything so far. I couldn't believe the details and little touches they added to everything from flight all the way down to the way you can switch your engines off, down to the way gravity affects you when you hop out of your ship in space.

I believe that they really have something special here and I can't wait to see what comes next:). I have a good feeling that the FPS module will be really something special.

There are still bugs abound but my gosh..so far this is one of the better experiences that I have had. The amount of detail that they put into everything so far is really mind blowing. Don't take my word for it though. Check it out yourself.

@drocdoc: Yeah no, that has never been how it has worked. None of the pay to win arguments I have seen are actually based on facts.

@Sanligo@drocdoc: of course not, those are just prices set for people who want to help fund/develop the game.

They are just milking the PC community

@suppaphly42@Mogan@drocdoc@Sanligo: Unless those numbers are actual prices that you can buy guns and armor for right now, they are actually made up.

The ARMA games have this, so it's not exactly new, but I'm still looking forward to it!

@Sanligo: Yup, and many other games have had it too, ArmA probably being the most current and well known. Definitely not a reinvention unless you only look at the biggest mainstream shooters.

There are great discussions about this not-so-new topic on the RSI forums. You should all check it out. They're worlds better than comment sections.

so... nothing really new. most FPSs nowadays lower your gun when you're sprinting, which takes time to be brought back up so you can shoot.

@BrunoBRS: He's making a milsim that's fun. ARMA + BF4. The FPS module will be an an online multiplayer arcade type game in star citizen.. No consequences, so you can practice.

@abram730@BrunoBRS: I don't think that term fits at all for Star Citizen, Star Citizen will most certainly not be a milsim. It will just be a slow paced shooter with certain elements that are common sense such as running makes you tired and breathe heavily as well as permadeath.

ARMA + BF4=Squad/Project Reality(Star Citizen won't be on that level)

@BrunoBRS@Sanligo: I don't think so myself, from how I read it, it sounds like ARMA's stance system when you double tap control. However you may be right, but it sounds nearly identical to ARMA with what is proposed.

I've been wondering for years now why fps games havnt done this already especially for single player campaigns. Instead you run around like a tool with your gun out in front of you even if there's no enemies around. Why not have a different animation that when the character is moving through areas of no danger that they will drop their gun down. This should have been done years ago and I'd love to know why it hasn't been, is there some sort of technical challenge behind this that makes it too hard to do because this seems like a given for the sake of immersion that should have happened at least a generation ago

See that word I capitalized, that's why most shooters don't do it :). While I personally love the sound of that, the big market doesn't want slow and tactical. Things keep getting more and more chaotic and fast, look how nuts people went over Titanfall, before it came out anyway :), and then CoD followed in that direction, as if CoD wasn't fast and chaotic enough in the past :).

@BuyaPC: There are quite a few First Person Shooters that allow you to do this. Chiefly among them, ArmA.. which has been out for a decade.

Every attachment and customization option will be Pay to Win. You will spend a fortune before you can compete with other players, just like Star Citizen

@kimjongun1313: You clearly have no clue what they're doing on this......Cris Roberts and his team are not moron douchebag asshats like most of EA, this is a crowdfunded game, by users, it'd be super asshatty of em to ask for more money after release, they are making their money as they make the game and each stretch goal means they can add more to the game.....when complete if you didn't back the game fine pay the $60 or whatever and you're good to go.....

dayum the ignorance is strong with this one......
