Star Citizen Developer Wants to Reinvent the FPS

Star Citizen, that ludicrously successful crowd-funded project, isn't just a space flight simulator. The developer, Roberts Space Industries is also creating a first-person shooter to accompany the space combat segments. In a new developer blog post, the team outlined some of its key changes to the FPS formula to improve "realism."

Standard FPS games, the post says only have two combat stances. One holds the player avatar's gun near the shoulder at all times while the other simulates careful aiming down the sights of the gun. Roberts says this isn't realistic and instead proposes a three stance system to improve balance.

The HUD in lowered stance.
The HUD in lowered stance.

With the new system, players will have to manage a gun in a lowered position, in a ready position, and in an "aim down sights" position. The addition of a third stance allows for a clearer distinction between players that have a gun ready to fire at a moment's notice (as they are in the typical first-person shooter), and those that have their gun at ease to making moving around an area easier. This more accurately simulates real combat stances and will force players to be much slower and more careful when engaging in combat. That sounds complicated, but Roberts says that most of this system will be handled automatically.

"Sprinting or using contextual navigation initiates the Lowered stance," the post says. "Moving slowly and deliberately keeps your weapon in the Ready stance. When in the Lowered stance (entered by sprinting or using contextual navigation), pressing the Fire button will bring you back into the Ready stance. When in the Ready stance, pressing the Aim button brings you into the Aim Down Sight stance. Releasing the held button returns the weapon to the Ready stance."

Roberts is also adding a new system for breathing and stamina to help reinforce a system of stat trade-offs between different kinds of weapons and armor. Heavier gear will drain players of stamina more, causing them to breath more heavily which, in turn, makes their aim more erratic. Players, much like real soldiers, will have to be careful so that they don't end up tiring their avatars. For the best aim, they'll also need to fire at the tops and bottoms of breaths to ensure that the chest isn't moving when they're shooting.

Roberts says that this will provide more balance and a refocused approach to shooting in games. "This is intended to slow the pace of combat, so that it feels more tactical and reinforces our intention that survival takes consideration, rather than random firing."

These features will be included along with the introduction of the FPS module code-named "Star Marine." There is no concrete date for Star Marine.

In any case, Star Citizen has raised more than $77 million, making it by far the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind to-date.

At the beginning, I thought there actually was some innovation. Something akin to Monster Hunter's Sheathing/Unsheathing concept.
But then he went on to describe Exactly what every shooter I've ever played does. You can't shoot while sprinting or climbing a ladder.

@Zaalin: Nope. The only game at the moment that is similar is Arma, COD/BF/Destiny/Halo etc aren't. Granted not a big difference.

Why stop there with the bizarre goal of realism? Surely having two independent arms to control the gun would be far more realistic? And the gravity in space better be as real as the size of the planet/ship you're on, as well as the recoil changing due to the gravity, and so on...

The game of chasing realism is a silly - just make things interesting, and if they're realistic as well, then great.

'Reinventing' is a bit overboard isn't it? Most of these features were present at Operation Flashpoint over a decade ago. It would be nice to see, but it isn't that innovative.

Wait a story about SC that isn't about the funding!? Pigs will fly!

The whole thing with SC is they want it to be as realistic as possible, this is just another example of that. Some of the threads in the forum can be bizarre, people debating actual science in relation to the games realism.

Stark contrast to the sheeples on here though "P2W/scam derp", keep bleating the unfounded myths.

Well it's not that different than other fps games. They want to add more realism to the experience of the module. I think it's a good thing to refresh a genre and add new things. They should have talked more about the zero-G stuff though. I find that much more interesting.

@han328solo: The Zero-G fps module they showed off looked dull as dishwater to me, possibly my least anticipated thing to date.

So, we've gone from being an ambitious space sim to reinventing the fps genre. I'm thinking Mr. Roberts needs reigned in a bit. At this pace we'll see the game in 2020. 77 Million only goes so far. 77 million will either get us a fantastic space sim with glorious explosions and dogfights or it's going to get us a mediocre space sim with excellent fps combat. Ugh.

@naomha1: Just passed 79 million. The ship combat is a lot of fun. even though it's masiclt a multiplayer arcade shooter in a MMO. The combat is basically the same minus reloading and respawn.

This is all in game, done by a backer with his game footage.

@Gamerno6666: Valve's job is to be Wal-mart for games sales, with a slightly worse customer service standard and far worse return policy.

I generally buy games I want to actually play. Not games I want to play for a few days. I've never had a single issue with STEAM. The people that have issues with it, tend to be people that think Valve can do something about bugs in games. Which has nothing to do with valve unless it's made by valve

I don't know how you can know that. But Valve (under Australian law at least) is responsible for the product they sell - doesn't matter where they got it from.

I know that by looking at the complaints from people. So many complaints often have nothing nothing to do with the STEAM service itself. I have over 300 games on STEAM. Not one issue is because of the retail store STEAM. It's with the game developer or publisher itself . All of the games I have work perfect. Granted there's been some compatability issues with a few of them. But that's more a windows 8 issue. Not a valve one. But with some tinkering all games I own work on Windows 8. Including the really old games I have from the 90's .

I think this is the point where someone has to pull the reigns in a little bit. Reinventing first person shooters in a space sim? How about no? That sounds like massively overcomplicating something that doesn't need to be overcomplicated... and it's something that nobody's even asking of them (the whole FPS thing in general).

GTA didn't try to re-invent driving mechanics so it surpasses GRID Autosport, Forza and Gran Turismo. Mass Effect didn't try to re-invent third person shooters so it surpasses whatever you consider the cream of the crop of third person shooters to be. Those games focused on either being a j4ck of all trades and master of none, or being great at one particular thing and then good at as many other things as possible.

Please don't turn the FPS portion into another Arma where you need your entire keyboard. It really isn't necessary.

@jinzo9988: It has been a long time since they called themselves a space sim, they go with Universe Simulator, it is a game about living in a universe and ships are a big part of that of course due to distances.

I personally can't wait to jump into the persistent universe.

Please don't put mass effect and order 1886 in any kind of comparison. Mass Effect had sht loads more to offer than 1886. It also had sht loads more to offer than a 3rd person shooter. :)

@Monsterkillah: Sure you can spend this kind of money, but it is not for a ship, it is to back the game, the ships are a bonus, ALL ships can be earned in game as in most games.

Don't spread misleading information, if you don't like the game just ignore it and move on and leave people who are excited for something different to enjoy the news.

@Monsterkillah: You can get the game for $38, get a ship, the MMO, the AAA single player, Arena Commander and beta access. Those are pledge ships to fund the making of the game. They are all in the game. You can buy them with ingame money after launch and they will stop selling ships for $.

Sounds just like ARMA 2/3 with ACE/AGM/equivalent without the whole blackout and stumble feature(which was pretty sweet). I haven't a problem in the slightest with this method, look forward to how the FPS will flesh out in this game.

@Smosh150: FPS is intended to be a happy middle ground between ARMA III and Battlefield 4.

ACE/AGM are arcade shooters. This is an actual sim. It has blackout and red out and you can if you black out too long have a g-loc. That is you pass out cold.

Here is the in game damage.
