Square Electronic Arts has confirmed earlier reports by announcing that Final Fantasy X will ship to retailers earlier than expected. The game will arrive in limited quantities on December 26. It was originally scheduled for a January 2002 release.

"We are very excited to roll out Final Fantasy X before the end of the year," said Jun Iwasaki, president of Square Electronic Arts. "All efforts were put into bringing the title out earlier than expected. We hope this long-awaited title will be played by many gamers over the holiday season. As with Final Fantasy VII for the original PlayStation, as the first Final Fantasy game released for the PlayStation 2, we hope that this title will set new standards in the role-playing game genre.''

Final Fantasy X has sold more than 2 million copies in Japan, becoming the first PlayStation 2 game to reach that milestone. The game was released on July 19 in that territory.
