Spyro The Dragon Remaster For PS4 Coming This Year - Report

Time to collect some gems.

The early games in the Spyro the Dragon series are in line for a remaster set to launch later this year, according to a new report. They'll apparently be released exclusively for PS4 at first, with the possibility of other platforms later.

Sources speaking with Kotaku have indicated that the original Spyro trilogy--Spyro the Dragon, Ripto's Rage (known as Gateway to Glimmer in Europe and Australia), and Year of the Dragon--is being remastered by Activision. The site says this project will be in the same vein as last year's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, with improved visuals (including new assets), a remastered soundtrack, and other enhancements. The same studio that worked on that project, Vicarious Visions, is said to be putting together the Spyro remaster.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Spyro The Dragon HD Remaster Reportedly Coming To PS4

It's noted that the trilogy could include content that was cut from the original games. Exactly what form that would take is unclear, but N. Sane Trilogy received the infamous Stormy Ascent level that was previously only accessible with a GameShark or emulator.

No Caption Provided

According to Kotaku, the project is set to be announced next month and then released during the third quarter of 2018 (which runs from July through September). It'll be available exclusively on PS4 (with PS4 Pro support) before launching on other platforms after that--an arrangement that's said to be the same with N. Sane Trilogy. To date, no ports of that remaster have been announced, though there have been rumors of an Xbox One release. Activision has publicly said that, given N. Sane Trilogy's success, more remasters are likely.

This September marks the 20-year anniversary of the original Spyro's release on PS1. That game, as well as the subsequent two that will be included in this remaster, were developed by Insomniac Games, the studio that would go on to create Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Sunset Overdrive. Later entries in the series were handled by other studios, with the biggest recent success being the spin-off Skylanders series.

at the moment its highly unlikely that spyro will come to xbox considering nsane trilogy was quietly cancelled in december but coming to pc and switch later this year. japans hates xbox lol. apparantly the xbox one x is just a cheap ultra 4k bluray player in japan that also plays video games. go figure.

@s7eventhheaven: While I agree that Japan doesn't seem to like the Xbox brand, I've no idea what this has to do with American IPs?

@darkelf83: because as much as japan doesnt support US made electronics as much as they like to support Japan made electronics they do like American IPs as long as they can buy them on Japan made electronics. from a business point of view the nintendo and playstation brand will sell the most units of said American IP.

Isn't that one of the early PS3 games without any trophies? Now a proper remaster with trophies like all other games. Another PS3 error corrected. "more remasters are likely". Sony is the way to go and PS4 may soon be the only PS console worth owning.

@s7eventhheaven: Yes, you're right. Still, it would be good if they included this one too. It should take less work than the original 3.

All for this. Was hoping this would be coming after the Crash remaster and the success it received. Hope the game is as fun as I remember. Wonder how difficult and long these games will be. I remember the games being some what challenging and time consuming as a kid (especially when trying to get all the collectibles) but when you are 8, 9, 10 years old games tend to seem harder and longer than they really are.

@Metallicwolf29: I loved playing Spyro. But there’s no way I’d want to go back and play it with the shitty ps1 era graphics I grew up with. I’m really glad they are remaking it from the ground up like the crash games

As with Crash, I can almost guarantee you I'll prefer the look of the originals, but I still think it's cool that they're making this.

@Tiwill44: Wait, people prefer the look of the originals over that of the VV remake? Is that the general consensus?

@asnakeneverdies: I wouldn't say it's the general consensus (unless we give that "woah" meme any credit), but I just really like the crisp look of the PS1 aesthetic, with its higher contrast and saturation and its simple low-poly charm. No motion blur or any other added effects either, so the games are very easy on the eyes, which is nice for platforming I guess. And it gave them a better atmosphere imo, the new games feel a bit childish by comparison.

Might just be nostalgia, but I would gladly play a good new 3D platformer in that old style if someone made one. Other genres that I think work well with this low-detail aesthetic are horror games and MMORPGs.

@Tiwill44: Well, even if NaughtyDog didn't embrace the possibilities of 3D environments like Nintendo did with Mario 64, at the expense of the platforming some could rightfully point out, they did produce one of the best looking aesthetically cohesive entirely tridimensional games of the generation. Which, I must add, were supposed to be childish. However, I concede that the added VFX present in the VV remake might've had a negative impact on gameplay, as I seem to recall discerning things like Crash's shadow on the ground used to be easier. I still prefer the look of the new ones, but I'd have to go through the classic trilogy again to be sure.

As for your second paragraph, I wouldn't mind playing modern Survival Horror games with fifth gen polygon budgets and prerendered environments, as long as those concessions allow focus to be on the design of the experience. So many projects these days appear to be forced to devolve into the formulaic, only to protect their massive investment on asset creation. That said, I'd rather watch my nails grow than waste my time on an MMORPG.

@asnakeneverdies:

Haha, yeah... these days I find myself agreeing with you about MMOs. But I'll tell you my experience with that genre. Buckle up, it's a bit of a long story which I'll try to be brief about. Hopefully this isn't too off-topic.

So the first one I played was Runescape in 2005, and it was like a revelation. I couldn't believe how much freedom I was given, it was just "go anywhere, explore or whatever mate, we won't hold your hand ever". And how much you could interact with so many things and trade with players and how the world felt alive. Plus the quests and the music were actually memorable. I was hooked and immersed.

This experience happened again a year later in the second MMO I played, which was a lesser-known game called Dofus. It had somewhat simple graphics like RS, but it was appealing and the style was fresh. You had just about the same amount of freedom too, but the combat was a lot different. Anyway, the point is that I thought this was the beginning of a pattern. I was like, this is the best thing.

But then after that, nothing.

I've tried almost all the MMOs I could find over the years. Well, mostly the ones I could try for free. But none of them came close to the amazingly immersive experience I had with RS/Dofus in 2005-06. Or the ones that did were really obscure and unpopular and most of them got shut down.

Upon research, I've figured that the type of MMO I liked was described as "sandbox MMORPG". The problem is, there hasn't been any significant effort to create a big new sandbox MMO in ages. That sub-genre is dead.

All the current MMOs that aren't dead completely miss the point of the genre. They're grindy treadmills where all you can do is follow your little quest marker like everyone else without saying anything, and you end up with 10 billion meaningless spells on your screen at once. That's not a game, that's just a pointless, forgettable chore.

So yeah, I've been staying away from MMOs for years now. And to remain on topic, I'd like to compare simpler graphics to books. Not that I even read anymore (I probably should), but y'know when you read a really good book and you're totally immersed even though it's just text? That's what I feel like when I play a good game with simple graphics, because it has to be processed through my imagination, just like text in a book. I super appreciate modern visuals as well though, but I guess they each have their strengths and weaknesses.

As for horror, we're naturally afraid of the unknown, so less details are generally spookier. Sometimes even kinda unintentionally. I mean dang, I was pretty spooked by that underwater eel in Mario 64, I won't lie.

@Tiwill44: The sandbox MMOs of the past are no more simply because they're potentially too frustrating for the great majority of players, which prefer slow steady progress over more dynamic experiences that demand greater time investments and require negotiating higher risks. No one wants to lose everything in one session, but by removing the lowest lows you have to balance the highest highs, dampening the proverbial wave. Long gone are the days of classic Ultima Online, when massive multiplayer environments were not only about making money but also about conducting social experiments, giving players the ability and responsibility to create their own content.

The modern player just wants a steady neverending stream of acknowledgments shoved down the throat through gamified progression systems that serve to trigger dopamine releases in a world where there's virtually no possibility of failure. Once you've that, just continue releasing more grindy content on a regular basis and you've yourself a sustained core gameplay loop that supports the basic business model.

As for the Eel in Mario 64, it scared me too back then, and I'm sure many others, especially when it gets out for the later stars. Jolly Roger Bay is not a good level, but there's a romance to it the others lack. It's very reflective and nostalgic for some reason.

@dacontag: I too grew up with the Crash Bandicoot games. Having played the originals to death, I've found that I prefer the VV look over that achieved by NaughtyDog on fifth gen hardware, but I haven't seriously played the PS1 games in more than a decade. That's to say the most contact I've had with Crash since the nineties and early two thousands, before the release of the N. Sane Trilogy, was through Uncharted 4. So I suppose there could be actual sensible reasons why people feel that way.
