Spyro The Dragon Remaster For PS4 Coming This Year - Report

Time to collect some gems.

The early games in the Spyro the Dragon series are in line for a remaster set to launch later this year, according to a new report. They'll apparently be released exclusively for PS4 at first, with the possibility of other platforms later.

Sources speaking with Kotaku have indicated that the original Spyro trilogy--Spyro the Dragon, Ripto's Rage (known as Gateway to Glimmer in Europe and Australia), and Year of the Dragon--is being remastered by Activision. The site says this project will be in the same vein as last year's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, with improved visuals (including new assets), a remastered soundtrack, and other enhancements. The same studio that worked on that project, Vicarious Visions, is said to be putting together the Spyro remaster.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Spyro The Dragon HD Remaster Reportedly Coming To PS4

It's noted that the trilogy could include content that was cut from the original games. Exactly what form that would take is unclear, but N. Sane Trilogy received the infamous Stormy Ascent level that was previously only accessible with a GameShark or emulator.

According to Kotaku, the project is set to be announced next month and then released during the third quarter of 2018 (which runs from July through September). It'll be available exclusively on PS4 (with PS4 Pro support) before launching on other platforms after that--an arrangement that's said to be the same with N. Sane Trilogy. To date, no ports of that remaster have been announced, though there have been rumors of an Xbox One release. Activision has publicly said that, given N. Sane Trilogy's success, more remasters are likely.

This September marks the 20-year anniversary of the original Spyro's release on PS1. That game, as well as the subsequent two that will be included in this remaster, were developed by Insomniac Games, the studio that would go on to create Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Sunset Overdrive. Later entries in the series were handled by other studios, with the biggest recent success being the spin-off Skylanders series.

Is GameSpot in some way compelled by Activision to adhere to misterminology? Otherwise, I see no reason to call a remake remaster. Companies might've marketing driven reasons for obfuscation and misinformation, but here it only serves to place site integrity and writer competence into question. Please, explain.

@Eddie619: I knew that already, but I find it difficult to accept as an excuse. We're individuals endowed with brains to make judgement calls. So, why continue spreading misinformation?

@asnakeneverdies: Lmao what are you complaining about? I'll never understand why gamers have to complain about everything they can no matter how trivial. You're bent over a single word instead of being happy this is happening? FFS.

@ninnymugginz: I heavily dislike the word gamer. I think it's both phonetically and semantically disgraceful and much prefer to just use player instead.

@asnakeneverdies: *Atrocitus shows up and uses the power of rage to cause the table to go flying through the air and out the window smashing the glass and cutting and maiming those within the table's trajectory*

Atrocitus: you want rage?? let your heart be consumed with rage, wear this ring acolyte and spread rage across the cosmos.....

Neat. Never had an original Playstation so I missed a lot of the classics. Crash was a great value, hopefully these will be, too.

With the monumental success that was Crash Bandicoot last year I don't think the news of Spyro making his way along a similar trajectory is going to come as a shock to many. Perhaps if enough excitement is generated from releases like this and the aforementioned title it will give developers incentive to take risks on delivering newer installments in the various franchises collecting dust in their archives.

With success in the way of Crash and the recently released Shadow of the Colossus remake perhaps such a scenario may come to fruition sooner rather than later.

@videogameninja: I wonder how will they treat the eventual sequels. Will they play it perhaps even too safe (both Crash 3 and Spyro 3 got a lot of flag for being the same old, so why would Crash 4 be any different?)? Or will they go with the Mind Over Mutant style and try to tell us that "yes its the same classic thing, except that it's 5000 times cooler!!!!"?

Having recently played the originals, I can't say I'm very excited. Crash still requires a lot of reflexes, precision and quick thinking. Spyro requires just strolling around non-dangerous environment with the tedious gem collecting (though sure Spyro, the enemies and allies have a lot of charm).

Crash Team Racing with online and Medievil 3 with new interesting era could be big deals though. At least those would make the next Battle Royale (the older one, the PS3 one, the Smash clone one) seem more relevant

@MJ12-Conspiracy: I understand your sentiment, but I think it's OK buying from a bad company if they release a good product, to send them a message. Crash was well worth it. Good behavior should be encouraged.

Awesome! These were great games in their own. They were overshadowed a little by the collect-em-all's made by Rare for the Nintendo 64, but I thought they were great fun. Vibrant graphics, pretty good controls for early 3D, great sound design. Cool that people can check them out this long later!
