Spot On: GameSpot on Gerstmann

SPECIAL REPORT: Following days of controversy and the first post-Jeff podcast, GameSpot answers burning questions about the most controversial staff change in its history.

For the past week, controversy has rocked the game news media--a controversy that originated here at GameSpot. The affair began last Wednesday when near-11-year veteran reviewer Jeff Gerstmann's tenure as editorial director ended. In keeping with the human-resources procedures of GameSpot parent company CNET Networks and in accordance with California State Law, no public comment was initially made about his departure.

In the void of information that followed, numerous conspiracy theories sprang up. First and foremost was that, as a result of pressure from publisher Eidos Interactive, GameSpot terminated Gerstmann because of his review of the multiplatform game Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. The game was released on November 13, 2007 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. (The PC version of the game was released on November 20, but has not yet been reviewed.)

Hundreds of reports pointed to the fact that the Kane & Lynch video review was pulled and the text review's copy was altered as evidence substantiating this hypothesis. In many readers' eyes, the fact that the entire GameSpot site was "skinned" with advertisements promoting Kane & Lynch all but confirmed the theory behind his firing. In the gaming press, the subsequent furor has been dubbed "Gerstmanngate."

Due to legal restrictions and corporate HR policy, GameSpot could not initially comment on Gerstmann's departure. Though the site officially addressed the issue on Monday, the full story behind his exit could not be told--until now.

In the spirit of full disclosure to our readership, GameSpot News has been provided the following answers by management to the questions below regarding the circumstances surrounding Gerstmann's exit.

Q: Was Jeff fired?

A: Jeff was terminated on November 28, 2007, following an internal review process by the managerial team to which he reported.

Q: Why was Jeff fired?

A: Legally, the exact reasons behind his dismissal cannot be revealed. However, they stemmed from issues unrelated to any publisher or advertiser; his departure was due purely for internal reasons.

Q: Why was the Kane & Lynch review text altered?

A: Jeff's supervisors and select members of the edit team felt the review's negativity did not match its "fair" 6.0 rating. The copy was adjusted several days after its publication so that it better meshed with its score, which remained unchanged. The achievements and demerits it received were also left unaltered. Additionally, clarifications were made concerning the game's multiplayer mode and to include differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

Q: Why was the Kane & Lynch video review taken down?

A: Both the text and video reviews of Kane & Lynch went up on Tuesday, November 13. The morning of Wednesday, November 14, the video was taken down due to concerns of quality. Specifically, its audio was deemed inferior due to a faulty microphone. There were also concerns about the limited amount of footage, which was unrepresentative of the game in the review.

Q: Why wasn't the video immediately reposted?

A: Due to the crush of high-profile games being released the following week, there were insufficient resources to reshoot and re-edit the video review.

Q: Why hasn't the video review been reposted since the "Gerstmanngate" controversy broke?

A: A determination was made by GameSpot Live, GameSpot's multimedia division, that reposting it would seem reactive and might exacerbate an inflamed situation. However, in the spirit of full disclosure, it has since been reposted, and is viewable on the site in its original form (See above). For those who want to be sure that it has not been altered after the fact, the video review is also available on YouTube for comparison purposes.

Q: Was Eidos Interactive upset by the game's review?

A: It has been confirmed that Eidos representatives expressed their displeasure to their appropriate contacts at GameSpot, but not to editorial directly. It was not the first time a publisher has voiced disappointment with a game review, and it won't be the last. However, it is strict GameSpot policy never to let any such feelings result in a review score to be altered or a video review to be pulled.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause Jeff to be terminated?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause the alteration of the review text?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment lead to the video review being pulled down?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Why was GameSpot "skinned" with Kane & Lynch ads when Jeff was terminated?

A: Due to design and development considerations, media buys on GameSpot are made weeks in advance. The timing of said ads was extremely unfortunate but was purely coincidental and determined solely by the game's release date of November 13, 2007.

Q: Why did the Kane & Lynch ads disappear from GameSpot right as the "Gerstmanngate" controversy began to heat up?

A: Advertising sales on GameSpot are sold by the day. The end of the Kane & Lynch "skin" promotion had been predetermined long beforehand. Internal documentation filed before the review appeared shows that the site skin was scheduled to run from November 17 to 29, 2007. Site-wide ad campaigns automatically change at midnight, hence the "skin" being removed after hours.

Q: Was Jeff's termination somehow tied to the departure of former GameSpot Live managing producer Tim Tracy?

A: No. Tim and Jeff are childhood friends and had been colleagues until Tim transferred over to other CNET Networks Entertainment properties. His exit was completely unrelated.

Q: Why didn't GameSpot write about Jeff's departure sooner?

A: Due to HR procedures and legal considerations, unauthorized CNET Networks and GameSpot employees are forbidden from commenting on the employment status of current and former employees. This practice has been in effect for years, and the CNET public-relations department stuck to that in the days following Jeff's termination. However, the company is now making an exception due to the widespread misinformation that has spread since Jeff's departure.

Q: When will the PC version of Kane & Lynch be reviewed?

A: We haven't decided when that will happen.

Q: GameSpot's credibility has been called into question as a result of this incident. What is being done to repair and rebuild it?

A: This article is one of the first steps toward restoring users' faith in GameSpot, and an internal review of the incident and controversy is under way. However, at no point in its history has GameSpot ever deviated from its review guidelines, which are publicly listed on the site. Great pains are taken to keep sales and editorial separated to prevent any impression of impropriety.

For years, GameSpot has been known for maintaining the highest ethical standards and having the most reliable and informative game reviews, previews, and news on the Web. The colleagues and friends that Jeff leaves behind here at GameSpot intend to keep it that way.

For a special report on Jeff Gerstmann's dismissal and a tribute to his legacy, tune in tomorrow to GameSpot's weekly live webcast, On the Spot. For a personal look at Gerstmann's exit, listen to the latest HotSpot podcast in which host Vincent Caravella discusses the controversial event with longtime Gerstmann colleagues Ricardo Torres, Ryan MacDonald, Alex Navarro, and Ryan Davis.

I agree with all the below comments. GameSpot WAS the definitive site that I trusted for honest reviews for my game purchases’. I never trusted IGN. Now I feel like its all total BS. I listened to the HOTSpot and unfortunately nothing was explained. I feel if Jeff was your mate that you would have taken a stand with the suits and walked out or something. I get the feeling some wanker in the CNET business had a go at Jeff for his Kane and Lynch review and Jeff said bite me or something to that effect. So the over sensitive suit sacked him for taking a stand. Either way CNET and the GameSpot product was flushed down the toilet with one stroke. It's very sad, from a selfish point of view because now I don’t know where to get credible information about how a game stacks up anymore? I hope Jeff sets up his own site to review and talk games I'll take my subscription money instead!

Of course this is already buried in the news pile by Gamespot staff. What a tragedy. I actually played K&L because of all this and guess what? It did suck! ...I'd give it a 5...especially if you guys gave R&C 7.5. I wanted to leave a review for it but player reviews had been disabled? Why's that?

I'm afraid I don't believe the explanation given here. It smacks of corporate ass-covering. Gamespot's credibility is absolutely tanked as a result of this, and rightly so. I'll be using gamespot only to check release dates, screenshots and videos of games from now on - their reviews are meaningless for purchase decisions now.

Whatever stories management tries to come up with, fact of the matter is that Jeff was fired under very suspicious coincidences. And this article doesn't explain anything we didn't already know. I understand that there's a law in the US preventing the parties discussing terminations, mainly to protect the employee. And out of respect for Jeff, I think we should drop this now. But GameSpot definately slipped down a couple of points in MY book! I hope Jeff's OK and I know he'll have no problem finding a new job. Hell, I would hire him at anytime if he was willing to move to the EU ;)

Any game review is a person's opinion, and he/she has a right to stand by it. I respect Geff's opinion, especially since he stood his ground on his Kane and Lynch review. Good for you Geff! I hope he gets a job at IGN or Ziff Davis. It's hard to trust Gamespot or CNET now if they are giving in to PR pressures.

This isn't about Jeff. It's about why he was fired. Until that's made clear, and the circumstances that lead to this mess are resolved, I won't be reading any of their reviews.

Dude, I can't believe Jeff is gone. I love Gamespot and all, but it seems like alot of their best personalities are leaving. I know this probably is a legit reason, but on the other hand, I still think it's kinda fishy. Stupid Kane and Lynch...

Jeffs boots will be hard to fill, but I will not be hanging up my subscription because of it. Jeff was a real character and you can see that his work collegues are choked by his departure. As are the paying customers and loyal fans that make Gamespot what it is. To diss it and call copout and foul is to do Gamespot an injustice this is by far the best online gamesite bar none, so come on people dig deep and stick with it. Show them that we will not be moved voice an opinion on these forums. Show your support by backing the guys/girls that are left that work tirelessly to bring us all the great gaming news. May they all get back to doing what we know they do best, amazing gaming editorial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To do anything else would be a discredit to Jeffs departure and his eleven years would have been for nothing if we all pack up shop. So good luck Jeff and Gamespot keep up the good work. We all need you. Thanx..................... Just 1 voice in this big family of ours. Lets not forget accountants and money makes a business wtf do they care about content charisma and personality? At the end of the day everybody is just a number and when urs is up that's it. Regardless of who you are ...................................

i wonder if that guy from drew carey will take over from Jeff....hmm.....to soon for jokes......oh come on guys bring the cynicism.....take everything everyone says with a pinch of salt....the firing could have been for reasons other than that crap-ola-cola game, it could have been due to his resistence to the new upper cnet management at gamespot....or it could be for much worse reasons...all this talk is just going to bring down gamespot and then u know what ign wins....damn@#!

Yeah....I'm not saying this is a conspiracy, but you have to admit it. Gamespot's explanation includes way too many coincidences. Gerstmann will be missed, along with Gamespot's credibility.

an employer would open themselves up to a lawsuit from the fired party if they were to give you ANY information about the terms of his dismissal. simple as THAT! there are rules regarding "confidentiality" which are there for everyone's protection. they save face in bad situations, and save hard feelings amongst co-workers in others... i have a confidentiality clause in my contracts, and breach of that is grounds for dismissal on my end, and grounds for a lawsuit on their end. stop looking at this as some rediculous conspiracy, and start to see it from a REAL WORLD perspective. it's not nearly as flashy as a conspiracy, but it sure does answer the questions you are allowed to know the answers to.

OMG! GHIII is in on it too! their audio is sub-par on the wii version, so they're going to fix it and replace them! just like GS tried with that review! they must be doing this to try to show everyone that mistakes happen or something... (did anyone sense the sarcasm there?) until some of you go through a dismissal experience like this for yourselves, you won't fully understand what's REALLY going on here with all of the secrecy.

Saying "Jeff was one of my favorites" is true until I go "well...I kinda like all the gamespot guys." That being said, as sad as I am about Jeff leaving, I still stand behind gamespot as the best online game reviewing site (and shows and podcasts). I'm really glad the gamespot guys explained what went on. I absolutely hate how people are saying that gamespot sucks or that "if they were really his friend, they would have left with him." Those people don't realize that they have job security, family, and lives. A month or two after leaving gamespot the guys woulda been like "umm...maybe I shouldn't have left my job." I really wish Jeff and all the gamespot people (including the oldies like Rich and Greg) the absolute best. (I really want to see Jeff on another game site, then I'll love gamespot AND some other site).

Does Gamespot REALLY think its readers are stupid enough to believe ridiculous nonsense like "poor audio quality is the reason the Kane & Lynch video review was removed"???? Does Gamespot think so little of us that they think these lazy and inept attempts to clean up its image can fool people?? The fact is that the Kane & Lynch video review was removed and the text review was significantly altered (WHICH ARE BOTH UNPRECEDENTED MOVES) at the **exact same time that Jeff was fired**. A child could figure out that all three events are directly related. Gamespot lost my trust. I only clicked a link to this article from a competing game review site.

wow what this article says sounds completely reasonable. these rules were set in place a while back, so if you feel like whining now you should have understood the rules. also, his firing has most likely no connection whatsoever to the amount of money eidos spent advertising because it was set for a predetermined amount of time. you people that think that is the reason behind it are ignorant and probably have no knowledge of how companies like this work and are most likely followers of the "goverment was behind 9/11" conspiracy.

I have lost my trust on GameSpot and that is why I've discontinued my subscription. If they manage to regain my trust, I'll consider renewing my subscription some day. But it'll take some time to reach that stage. I want to be able to rely on the review score when I spend my hard earned cash on the games. If I can't do that then I see no point in reading the reviews. Bye for now...

What a terrible excuse, it's obvious why Mr. Gerstmann was fired: he didn't give an inflated score to a mediocre game just because the developer was putting money in his pocket.

Inferior audio caused the video review to be pulled? That's the worst excuse I have ever heard. No matter what kind of damage control GS tries to do, they have made some bad calls and this will continue to hurt them. Even many European websites covered the subject.

Nice try, it just doesn't make sense, a review has never been altered before and even 8 year old video-reviews are still up and about in this site, why would this one in particular be removed and the text rewriten, the numbers just don't add up. GS, you're dead to me.

I can see that, I still trust Gamespot. Plus I thought Jeff's review sounded bad and by the end I thought the game was getting a 3, instead of the six Jeff gave it. If you don't trust gamespot over the fact that a reviewer that you liked was fired after a bad review of a sponsor's game, you're parionoid. Sh*t happens, get over it.

Until I hear the story out of Jeff's mouth... I dont buy any of what was spewed out there. If PR was such a concern, this wouldnt have taken a week to conjure up. It wouldnt have snowballed out over the internet for an entire week with no "official" response. This seem more like a really poor attempt at damage control, after the fact.

I still remember the Driv3r incident. After that, I use Google news to search for game reviews. Nowadays, I used more sophisticated model of game review system. I follow reviewers instead of the site. I love Greg's review and Jeff always seem to me as Greg best student. I trusted Greg so I trust Jeff but I can't say the same about other Gamespot reviewers. It is funny nowadays score of 8 is really score of 6. K&L adv score is 8. It is the safe score and reviewers can run from cover. But score 8 is quickly lost it meaning, reviewers under pressure can't give a bad game a poor score 6 or 7, the option is 8. That is just crap.

I'm going to add some new Q's to the list that I'd like to see answered by whoever's calling the shots over there now (obviously, not the editorial staff). Q. HOW is Gamespot legally bound from not giving the reasons for Jeff's removal? Are we talking about a severance contract? Q. WHY was such an arrangement made? You clearly wanted to hide something and that makes it grounds for an insane amount of suspicion and speculation, much of it entirely reasonable. Q. Why would Eidos even think to call anyone at your company about their issues with a review when the score wasn't substantially lower than the norm? Has some element of the staff been overly receptive to such overtures in the past? Why would they be if everybody was on the same page about Gamespot's devotion to integrity and honesty? Q. Will there be some attempt to assure Gamespot's readership that the only people controlling Gamespot's critical editorial content are the editorial staff themselves. Q. Why was nobody on the editorial staff informed about Jeff's removal before it happened? Q. Finally, who the Hell do you think you're fooling? Do you even comprehend the sheer amount of contempt you've shown for your audience, your staff, the industry, and the very concept of journalistic integrity?

I'm not a huge believer in coincidence, and especially not in coincidence after coincidence after coincidence. Let's list all of them, shall we? Jeff's Video Review happens to be the only one on the site with faulty audio, requiring it to be taken off line. Jeff's review is edited to reflect a less negative view point "more fitting" of the actual score. This is done after Jeff is fired and after the review is posted. Do you people not edit and review your own work before posting it? As Jeff's review demolishes Kane & Lynch, all ads for the game rapidly vanish from the site. Jeff is fired. But of course, it's with totally no relation to any of the above. Let's not forget that Eidos has also been caught tampering with reviews from other sites, attributing 5 star ratings to sites that only gave the game 6/10 or about that. Also, misquoting the text of reviews and even previews to paint K&L in a different light. Yeah, sorry Game$pot, still not buying the story.

Gamespot used to be my top site to go to for the reviews. It was the one source of pure, genuine reviews. Now their integrity is questionable. I don't know if I can find another place for honest input on games. How do we know if other gaming sites aren't any different?

@Master: Well, that hits on another ugly side of the equation. The Kotaku source mentioned this supposed research that's lead their marketing people to believe it would be a good idea to try to make the site appeal to the legions of "casual gamers" out there. Um... explain this to me. Since when do people with a casual or passing interest in something actively seek out publications and online communities that are all about it? I have a casual interest in cars and will occasionally read up on the latest Honda or another company has to offer. There is nothing Car & Driver can do that will make me want to get a subscription but they aren't so "hard core" that I'm intimidated by their content. I just don't care enough for it to devote that much time to it. I don't know enough about it to argue or discuss anything in great detail on a forum and I don't care enough about new product to constantly check up on it. To casual gamers, Gamespot is just one of many options that pops up on a google search. Choosing Gamespot over other sites would make them less than casual. If you want the casual gamers, just make sure your content is in plain English and that your web admin stays up on SEO. It's not just that it ain't broke. These idiots don't even understand the nature of the business or audience well enough to know broke from fixed.
