Spider-Man PS4 Will Let You Dress As The Worst Version Of The Character

J. Jonah Jameson here...

Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is one of the best PlayStation 4 releases of 2018 and undoubtedly the best Spider-Man game of all time. Since its launch the studio has supported the title with DLC that includes extra story missions and, more importantly, brand new outfits for everyone's favourite web slinger. Thus far we've had the Spider-Clan outfit from Marvel's Mangaverse, Spider-UK from Edge of Spider-Verse, and numerous other cool costumes. It's been great.

However, we've now hit a bit of rough spot with Spidey outfit releases. In the newest update for the PS4 game, Sony and Insomniac will include the suit from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, in which Peter Parker and his crime fighting alter-ego were played by absolute charisma void Tobey Maguire.

Now Playing: Spider-Man PS4 Adds Sam Raimi Movie Suit - GS News Update

For those that grew up with these movies and enjoyed them, this is great news and I'm happy for them; they get to cut about New York in a Spidey outfit they know and love. And it's free, so you really can't complain.

But I can complain. And I will. Because, unfortunately, for many others out there this only serves to remind us of that sad six-year period where everyone was so desperate for a superhero movie that didn't make them embarrassed to be comic book fan that they doublethinked themselves into believing that trilogy was good. It wasn't.

At most the entire Raimi series had one or two moments that were exciting and Alfred Molina was ok as Doctor Octopus, I guess. For the most part though, those movies were awkward, cheesy, and completely failed to look beyond the surface of what makes Spidey interesting. And you cannot kiss someone while upside down and have a good time; it feels as bad as it looks.

Complaining aside, Insomniac has done a great job in rendering the suit in-game, based on the screenshot above. It's a cool looking outfit and the webbed design makes it distinct in the lineup of many, many costumes that have existed over the years. Now that there's a good Peter Parker wearing it, it can actually be done some justice.

Spider-Man was released for PS4 in September and, in his review, Edmond Tran awarded it a 9/10. "Minor shortcomings don't detract from Insomniac's achievement in creating a game that feels like an authentic interpretation of a beloved creation," he said. "The feeling of embodying Spidey and using his abilities is astonishing, and the time spent on exploring its major characters help make its story feel heartfelt, despite superhero bombast.

"There have been open-world Spider-Man games before, but none so riveting and full of personality, none that explore and do justice to this many facets of the universe. Insomniac has created a superior Spider-Man experience that leaves a lasting impression, one that has you longing for just one more swing around New York City, even after the credits roll."

The next major DLC release for Spider-Man on PS4 is Silver Lining, which launches on December 21 and will wrap up the City That Never Sleeps story arc. As the name indicates, Silver Sable will play a big part in this chapter, as she's not very happy that Hammerhead has been stealing her weapons.

I just wanna make clear that I just created this account just to reply to this article.

Ok kiddo, let's begin.

Listen Tamoor, if you didn't like Spiderman 3 that's ok, it was really bad, nobody liked that Eddie Brock/ Venom anyway, that Sandman's plot twist was ridiculous, Dark Spiderman/Dark Peter Parker was lame, I think we all know it, it was an infamous film. But you can't complain and cry about all the whole trilogy, because as far as I know, Spiderman 1 & 2 were pretty good and memorable. Don't even make me start on Spiderman 2 since it was the best of the 3, and there is a REASON of why it's the best. Well let me tell you, even when you think they were "cheesy" and "awkward", Spiderman 1 & 2 showed us the true Spiderman, believe it or not, that little nerd who actually believe in his past away uncle's last words, showed his true heroism and humbleness when he sacrificed his safety and risked his life for some random people, I think that is what Spiderman is, at least if you have read the comics (and I mean the classic comics) and when a character is made with those virtues and it portrays it on film I think that actually is a success.

Ok, now that these facts are already said and explained, I wanna ask this rhetorical question, How is this the worst version of Spiderman?? (I mean It's not the "Emo" Peter Parker suit) Why you have to complain about something the fans (like me) really wanted to see on a videogame? It's just a SKIN! Do you know what a skin is? How does that affect your life? And just in case you didn't like Spiderman 3 why would you screw on the entire Sam Raimi's trilogy and then come up with this nonsense in an article about a videogame about a skin update release?

You need to grow up and stop being a crying baby about little things like these. If you didn't like something that's ok but don't bring your personal emotional film traumas into a videogame article, please. Do all of us a favor and act as a professional news writer or at least as a grown up man. Just think about it.

Thanks and good luck on your writting.

Reading these comments are good times. So many people bashing an opinion article for having an opinion. "Thats your opinion! MMY OPINION is that you are a big fat poop head, and Sider man 1 and 2 are blah blah blah... So good..". Well my opinion was they were alright. Kind of meh. Better than amazing spider Man but like so is every other movie ever made and my two spec scripts. Homecoming was fun because Tom Holland portrayed Peter's personality a bit closer to how he actually is but I'd rather play this game than watch any of them. This game is how the movies should have been.

Why was there a whole article created for the sole purpose of an insignificant opinion, about an insignificant topic? I happen to think that the first two Spider-Man films are amongst the best "comic book" films released, along with the first 2 X-Men films, and the 3 Christopher Nolan Batman films.

How can such a big publication post garbage such as this? What an absolute joke to say that one of the most beloved superhero films ever made is better than the Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 which were both absolutely terribly made! (See Ralphthemoviemaker on YouTube for reference) If anything it’s frustrating to see an “opinion” with almost no support and that blatantly tries to disrespect the fans that have been begging for the suit since the game released. Nice job insulting your readers GameSpot.

I really enjoyed these Spider Man movies (The third tried to do too much at once and didn't succeed well enough in my opinion) but overall I really enjoyed them.

Maybe next time you post an update video do a better job at it by avoiding delivering any controversial opinions. Especially if you're opinions on this suit is just another stupid complaint. Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies aren't the greatest but are easily better then The Amazing Spider-Man and easily better then Spider-Man Homecoming because those movies did their own thing and went with something that wasn't ripped off of anything else other then the comics of Spider-Man, it had a few moments of cringe but it was all outweighed by all the good moments it pulled off and unlike Spider-Man Homecoming, those movies at least treated the main character with respect (meaning there weren't any less good heroes going off to save the main character just to show off how bad the main character is).

Spider Man 2 isn't bad, but it is wildly overrated. The action isn't that good, Doc Ock is an ok villain but his plans make zero sense. Why rob banks to buy a thing, when you could just go directly steal the thing? Why, when he has to talk to Peter about Spider-man, does he immedietely throw a car at Peter and MJ? If you kill him then he can't rat on Spider-Man!

Spiderman stopping that train makes no sense. He has super strength but not super durability. For example, Spider-man can't take a bullet. He DEFINITELY would break both his legs if he tried the train stop. Also they jumped the gun with "No More Spider-Man" and I think I yelled out loud in the theatre when he went to get advice from Aunt May for like the 3rd time in the film....

Anyways, the movie is good but its not even in top 10 best super hero movies, wouldn't make my personal list until the mid 20s probably.

@CashPrizes: I''m 99.9999% sure that robbing a high-street bank is easier and more viable than stealing controlled substances (radioactive or other exotic compounds) from a scientific research facility or military complex.

@CashPrizes: "Spider Man 2 isn't bad, but it is wildly overrated."

Spider-Man 2 has a 7.3 rating on IMDB. Since its release, there has been almost twenty superhero movies that have outgrossed it. I don't think you know what the word overrated means. Thor Ragnarok and Age of Ultron are rated better on IMDB than Spider-Man 2. It is not overrated. It's the opposite.

"The action isn't that good,"

Tell that to the Oscar which the film received for visual effects.

"Doc Ock is an ok villain but his plans make zero sense."

If you don't bother to understand it.

"Why rob banks to buy a thing, when you could just go directly steal the thing?"

You're basically questioning the logistics of almost every Spider-Man villain in the comics. And it's pretty simple: The advanced machines he needs to build a fusion reactor may not be available in his place of occupation. And by buying it on the black market, he doesn't need to expose himself and can work secretly.

"Why, when he has to talk to Peter about Spider-man, does he immedietely throw a car at Peter and MJ? If you kill him then he can't rat on Spider-Man!"

What makes you think that he directly threw car at him? The movie never shows us what exactly happened. It could've been accidental. He was rampaging on the streets, a car was heading towards him, he grabbed it with tentacles and threw away in a random direction.

Spiderman stopping that train makes no sense.

"He has super strength but not super durability."

Spider-Man can lift up to 10+ tons. You can't be that strong without being durable.

"For example, Spider-man can't take a bullet."

He can. Read comics, normie.

"Also they jumped the gun with "No More Spider-Man"

No, it was a beautiful homage to the comic.

"and I think I yelled out loud in the theatre when he went to get advice from Aunt May for like the 3rd time in the film...."

A conflicted young man asks for an advice from the closest person he has in his life? What gives...

"Anyways, the movie is good but its not even in top 10 best super hero movies,"

With your amateurish reasoning for why it's not good, I can pretty much say that every superhero movie in your top 10 list can be criticized the exact same way. Let's assume Iron Man is on your list. I can also be a pedantic asshole and say that Iron Man makes no sense. It makes no sense the moment Tony Stark survives the surgery in which an arc reactor is put in his sternum. The movie later on shows that you can shove your entire wrist in its hole, which makes even less sense, because human body isn't that wide. But you know what people do in order to enjoy the movie regardless of its scientific fallacies? They turn their brain off and enjoy the movie for what it is.

Heard about this article and had to read it. Lol holy crap! I never was a huge fan of the early 2000's Spider-Man movies. First one was fine, but watching it present day is almost like Watching Star Wars Episode 1, in the present. I mean that Hob Goblin suit was pretty awful. Spidey 2 I don't remember, but I also understand is thought of very highly. 3 was just awful. Turns out, there are certain superheroes I just like way more than others, and Spider-Man is at the bottom for me. I like the new Spider-Man because he isn't the focus (in the Avengers movies). Homecoming was great though, loved that one.

Time for someone in charge to get reemed out.

Calling those movies the worst versions, and then continuing to lament about specific aspects of the story and villains... yikes, amateur hour, and pretty stupid and annoying to even read.

I’m guessing this is coming from some idiot who loved the amazing sm series lol :/

Though I did like Tobey Maguire as the comic book hero, I thought the Spider-Man trilogy was just okay and serviceable. With that said, I don't think this article does GameSpot any favors because it reads like an opinion piece masquerading as a news article. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but if a reader cannot identify a news article from an personal opinion piece or even an editorial, it comes off as disingenuous and a bit manipulative. Just a heads up.

The fucking click bait is strong here.
Had some fun bitching at his friends defending him on Twitter the other day. They tried to tell me because it wasn't generic clickbait, it was fine. Dude, it's still clickbait, and it's pretty shitty to impose your opinion very childishly though an informative news piece like that.
If you need to write an opinion piece. Write an opinion piece. This article is what NOT to do.

Rami's version was the most accurate version of Spidey on the big screen.

Whoever wrote this doesn't know anything about Spider-Man.

The only bad things was the Goblin costume design, and Spider-Man 3 was meh at best.

So far it is the ONLY set of films to get Spidey right. Especially with the parts where Peter wants to give up being Spider-Man are very well done.

Marvel themselves can't even do Spidey justice, Homecoming was garbage and his appearances in Civil War and Infinity War were crap too. Spidey wouldn't just idolize Tony and certainly never take orders from Iron Man. Marvel doesn't even know how to handle their own character.

@suprsolider: You ever read the actual Civil War comics? SPiderman divulged his secret identity to the WORLD because he respected Tony Stark so much. To understand how huge that was, keep in mind that in Marvel Comics, there was a VERY small pool of people that knew he was Spiderman. Fantastic Four knew, a couple of X-Men. Maybe Captain America. Other than that he didn't do teams and stuff.

@dussan2: That wasn't why he revealed his secret identity. Peter was in a bad position at that point in his life. He lost his family house and his family had nowhere to go. So Stark offered him to move with his family to his building. Stark was being very pushy against Peter, and Peter just couldn't do anything to oppose him. And what is more important, Peter was already an adult during the Civil War, and he had gone through a lot of struggles since he became Spider-Man, and for the most of his life he always was on his own. That's why he finally accepted someone's help. It was a direct play on his stubbornness from the previous years.

I am very aware of the comics. I have read Civil War.

I am also aware of the comics. That is why I know that he would never just take orders from Tony. Sure he respected him and has helped the avengers many times but Spidey really just does his own thing. That is what makes him unique.

If you want people that knew Peter and Spidey are the same, you have Eddie Brock, Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), Wolverine, Tony Stark, Aunt May (eventually it was revealed that she knew Peter was Spidey),

Best version of character if you ask me. Miss me some Tobey Maguire Spider-Man. I know everyone mostly agrees 2 was the best but i swear i really really liked 3.

Only thing i didn't like about those movies was casting Kirsten Dunst. The writing probably had a little something to do with that too though. After all the "me, me, me!.." stuff, I was ecstatic when Peter snubbed her for Bryce Dallas Howard's Gwen Stacey! And the carefree black suit Spiderman was a breath of fresh air. Closest thing we've got to an antihero until Deadpool came out.

Here's actual footage of Sam Raimi heading to the bank to cash his checks from directing the Spiderman trilogy while Tamoor complains about how much he doesn't like them:

1 and 2 were decent. 3 was hot garbage, though.
