Spider-Man PS4 Will Let You Dress As The Worst Version Of The Character

J. Jonah Jameson here...

Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is one of the best PlayStation 4 releases of 2018 and undoubtedly the best Spider-Man game of all time. Since its launch the studio has supported the title with DLC that includes extra story missions and, more importantly, brand new outfits for everyone's favourite web slinger. Thus far we've had the Spider-Clan outfit from Marvel's Mangaverse, Spider-UK from Edge of Spider-Verse, and numerous other cool costumes. It's been great.

However, we've now hit a bit of rough spot with Spidey outfit releases. In the newest update for the PS4 game, Sony and Insomniac will include the suit from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, in which Peter Parker and his crime fighting alter-ego were played by absolute charisma void Tobey Maguire.

Now Playing: Spider-Man PS4 Adds Sam Raimi Movie Suit - GS News Update

For those that grew up with these movies and enjoyed them, this is great news and I'm happy for them; they get to cut about New York in a Spidey outfit they know and love. And it's free, so you really can't complain.

But I can complain. And I will. Because, unfortunately, for many others out there this only serves to remind us of that sad six-year period where everyone was so desperate for a superhero movie that didn't make them embarrassed to be comic book fan that they doublethinked themselves into believing that trilogy was good. It wasn't.

At most the entire Raimi series had one or two moments that were exciting and Alfred Molina was ok as Doctor Octopus, I guess. For the most part though, those movies were awkward, cheesy, and completely failed to look beyond the surface of what makes Spidey interesting. And you cannot kiss someone while upside down and have a good time; it feels as bad as it looks.

Complaining aside, Insomniac has done a great job in rendering the suit in-game, based on the screenshot above. It's a cool looking outfit and the webbed design makes it distinct in the lineup of many, many costumes that have existed over the years. Now that there's a good Peter Parker wearing it, it can actually be done some justice.

Spider-Man was released for PS4 in September and, in his review, Edmond Tran awarded it a 9/10. "Minor shortcomings don't detract from Insomniac's achievement in creating a game that feels like an authentic interpretation of a beloved creation," he said. "The feeling of embodying Spidey and using his abilities is astonishing, and the time spent on exploring its major characters help make its story feel heartfelt, despite superhero bombast.

"There have been open-world Spider-Man games before, but none so riveting and full of personality, none that explore and do justice to this many facets of the universe. Insomniac has created a superior Spider-Man experience that leaves a lasting impression, one that has you longing for just one more swing around New York City, even after the credits roll."

The next major DLC release for Spider-Man on PS4 is Silver Lining, which launches on December 21 and will wrap up the City That Never Sleeps story arc. As the name indicates, Silver Sable will play a big part in this chapter, as she's not very happy that Hammerhead has been stealing her weapons.

I created an account just to rail at the sad opinionated headline and article. As someone who read Spider-man comics for 30+ years, and a movie aficionado, I completely disagree with the tone of this article. The Amazing Spider-man movies are significantly worse than Spider-man 1 and 2. That's not just my opinion. Look at Rotten Tomatoes. Spider-man = 90, Spider-man 2 = 93, Spider-man 3 = 63 (yes, it sucked), Amazing Spider-man = 72, Amazing Spider-man 2 = 52.

@nekoken: Ha, I hadn't logged into my Gamespot account for god knows how long, but had to just to express my concern on this post. I agree, 1 and 2 are the best, 2 is my personal fave and agree 3 was bad, but even then I think I enjoyed it more than the Amazing films... and that's saying something.

i agree. The original early 2000's spiderman 1&2 movies were better than the other ones they had come out. I guess the guy who wrote the article just didn't like the actor. But he fit better than the other guy from amazing spiderman.

Post a click-baity header and an opinionated troll post about a movie many enjoy for teh cliks. Rack up the traffic with all the outraged fans. Let it run for a while.

Post a SECOND "article" without all the trolling.

A few days from now say, "hey hey hey. My bad. This was supposed to be a satire post because I put 'J. Jonah Jameson here...' under the header. Don't you GET IT? It's like if JJ Jameson wrote this article! Sorry for the misunderstanding! Lol!"

Profit.

At least, that's what I think this is.

1) This is not journalism. Because one of the first things you're taught is that you do NOT publish opinions as facts.

2) Barely related to video gaming

3) Do you even comic book? Yeah, Tobey's acting ability is quite limited, but the character (and his world) was MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more faithful to the source material than Disney has given us thus far. And cheesy? Once again, do you comic book?

Worst version of the character? Absolute charisma void? What have you smoked? Do you call yourself a journalist? Your goal has to be to inform people objectively; we don't give a shit about your personal opinion. I've read this news on other websites and none of them treated the topic in such an unprofessional, stupid manner.

Worst? How old are GS journalists? 16? Let me just say that Spider Man 2 is the best super hero movie ever made after the Dark Knight. And there's absolutely no way in hell any other spider man movie will even remotely come close to it.

Whew, man I forgot I was reading an actual article, thought it was just one of those really long winded troll comments.

Regardless, thanks for sharing with us your opinion. I hope all those lists where The Amazon Spider-Man ends up below Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 2 is still considered the best hasn't upset you too much. Maybe this impromptu venting session made you feel better about it. Enjoy using the superior movie Spider suit, lol.

Yep. I am going elsewhere to get my gaming news. The simple fact that they let this fucking dipshit write and PUBLISH articles shows me that their "journalism" is purely childish. He literally said, "It's free so you really can't complain," then proceeds to go into some bullshit rant about boo hoo these movies aren't my favorite... This was the straw that broke the camel's back. I have no faith in this site anymore. Bye! ?

@jayskoon93: Was about to write the same thing. This article is the straw that broke the camel's back for me as well. GS has been getting shittier and shittier, but this clickbaity title and troll write up is what finally did me in. Just removed GS from my Google News feed. Won't be coming here any longer.

It's funny how GS is so desperate for clicks that they have succumbed to trash mag-style writing, but in the end I believe they're going to keep losing more readers like us, instead of growing. Too bad.

Tamoor needs to drop the Kotaku style snark that was last appreciated and lost its appeal in about 2011. It’s just awkward and needlessly combative.

I legit just made a new Gamespot account to comment on this article because of such a dumb comment. You may not have liked that Spider-Man but when writing an article for a company such as Gamespot you should at least keep your opinion to yourself. It's not very professional for a random journalist to make a big negative statement about something that clearly many people like. The fact that the movies were bad don't relate at all to the fact that there is a new costume in the Spider-Man PS4 game.

Nothing more irritating than someone who thinks anyone who likes a movie they didn't must've been brainwashed or has no taste... speak for yourself!

Tobey wasn't the best Spider-Man, just in terms of how accurate to the comics, but he was still great and the movies were drastically better than the Garfield movies, even though Garfield was a great Spider-Man!

Oh man the baiting for hits on this article is pretty epic. lol Well played. You knew exactly how people were going to react to this and hey you got your views so it worked. lol I liked the first two of the Raimi Spiderman trilogy but the Venom one? Ehhhhhh lol Didn't like the next two at all, and the new one I think I need more time to form an opinion. The first movie was just kind of uneventful as opposed to other Marvel flicks.

Oh heaven forbid that you say something bad about the Raimi trilogy, and Tobey. Geezus man, you have balls. Didn't you realize that these people grew up on these movies, and this automatically means that these movies are the greatest pieces of entertainment in the history of mankind?! What kind of fool are you?!

Btw. i grew up on these moves too, and i never liked Tobey, never liked the over the top campy tone, and hated half the actors. But sure, gr8st comic movie ever my rose tinned glasses wearing brothers!

@csigaz: I think a lot of people are commenting on it because of the unrelated rant about how terrible the Raimi trilogy is. Sure, it's the Raimi suit and their opinion is loosely connected, but really what did his thoughts on how terrible they thought the first trilogy was have to do with getting free DLC?

Also a lot of people apparently still like the first trilogy, so it was definitely a bait. Mission accomplished I suppose.

@bronlebron6: All 3 raimi movies have horrible acting, atrocious special effect (even considering its time), and a script that would make even a 3 year old cringe, not to mention the fact that those movies portrayal of MJ, Aunt May, Peter and the others are horrible.

Yes, SM2 WAS an alright comicbook movie at the time, but in a world where where Homecoming and the Spider-Verse showed everybody how a good spider-man movie is made, the Raimi trilogy is nothing more then a bad dream.

I totally understand if you like those movies. There is nothing wrong with loving something thats considered a bad movie, but let's not act like SM2 is fucking Citizen Kane.

So this is what Gamespot has to do in order to get you to sign up with an account. This article is filled with crap spewed out of the mouth of someone who lacks understanding what it is even to like Spider-Man. I'm grateful to have anything and then not even understand that before these Spiderman movies what else did you have. You could argue that these Spider-Man movies opened up the door to let Hollywood make the bigger movies we see today based on comics.
