Spider-Man PS4 Will Let You Dress As The Worst Version Of The Character

J. Jonah Jameson here...

Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is one of the best PlayStation 4 releases of 2018 and undoubtedly the best Spider-Man game of all time. Since its launch the studio has supported the title with DLC that includes extra story missions and, more importantly, brand new outfits for everyone's favourite web slinger. Thus far we've had the Spider-Clan outfit from Marvel's Mangaverse, Spider-UK from Edge of Spider-Verse, and numerous other cool costumes. It's been great.

However, we've now hit a bit of rough spot with Spidey outfit releases. In the newest update for the PS4 game, Sony and Insomniac will include the suit from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, in which Peter Parker and his crime fighting alter-ego were played by absolute charisma void Tobey Maguire.

Now Playing: Spider-Man PS4 Adds Sam Raimi Movie Suit - GS News Update

For those that grew up with these movies and enjoyed them, this is great news and I'm happy for them; they get to cut about New York in a Spidey outfit they know and love. And it's free, so you really can't complain.

But I can complain. And I will. Because, unfortunately, for many others out there this only serves to remind us of that sad six-year period where everyone was so desperate for a superhero movie that didn't make them embarrassed to be comic book fan that they doublethinked themselves into believing that trilogy was good. It wasn't.

At most the entire Raimi series had one or two moments that were exciting and Alfred Molina was ok as Doctor Octopus, I guess. For the most part though, those movies were awkward, cheesy, and completely failed to look beyond the surface of what makes Spidey interesting. And you cannot kiss someone while upside down and have a good time; it feels as bad as it looks.

Complaining aside, Insomniac has done a great job in rendering the suit in-game, based on the screenshot above. It's a cool looking outfit and the webbed design makes it distinct in the lineup of many, many costumes that have existed over the years. Now that there's a good Peter Parker wearing it, it can actually be done some justice.

Spider-Man was released for PS4 in September and, in his review, Edmond Tran awarded it a 9/10. "Minor shortcomings don't detract from Insomniac's achievement in creating a game that feels like an authentic interpretation of a beloved creation," he said. "The feeling of embodying Spidey and using his abilities is astonishing, and the time spent on exploring its major characters help make its story feel heartfelt, despite superhero bombast.

"There have been open-world Spider-Man games before, but none so riveting and full of personality, none that explore and do justice to this many facets of the universe. Insomniac has created a superior Spider-Man experience that leaves a lasting impression, one that has you longing for just one more swing around New York City, even after the credits roll."

The next major DLC release for Spider-Man on PS4 is Silver Lining, which launches on December 21 and will wrap up the City That Never Sleeps story arc. As the name indicates, Silver Sable will play a big part in this chapter, as she's not very happy that Hammerhead has been stealing her weapons.

To the commenters who are upset by this - I get it. He evidently hates something you evidently like. But it's literally his job to give his opinion on these things. For all the complaining people do about articles on major games sites basically just sucking up to the money and/or being glorified advertisements - I for one welcome honest unfiltered opinions about media. Even if I don't agree with them.

To my point - when expressing your disagreement, please note that we do have a code of conduct and that attacks against staff are strictly enforced. So disagree away, but remember to do so respectfully.

Thanks

@xantufrog: Journalists don't like something readers like=Dead.

Journalists like something readers don't like=Dead.

Most are damned no matter what. The ones who don't get trashed as much are the podcast guys such as YongYea (because they try to remain as neutral as possible while still showing whether they like something or not).

At least this article is not as one sided as that God of War one that sparked 600+ comments.

@xantufrog:

Then with that being said, his opinion pieces should be denoted as such. Bundling in strong personal opinions in with regular news is unjournalistic because you are trying to influence opinions with your own instead of just putting the facts on the table and allowing the reader to form their own opinion.

If Mr. Hussein subscribes to this kind of “journalism”, perhaps he can work the gaming and technology section on Breitbart.

@xantufrog: This comes across as trying to referee people's opinions and chiding them to not dare to disagree strongly. This man's actual job is to review video games; instead he posted a little bit about DLC and then went on to portray the Raimi trilogy as the "worst version" of Spider-Man ever, and what's worse, couldn't even bother to state why he feels that way other than to say people who disagree with him tricked themselves into liking these movies.

If he had elaborated on why they're oh so terrible, that might be some interesting food for thought. I mean, if you're going to go there, why not go all the way? What he offered up was basically, "These movies suck, deal with it."

I'm not even a Spidey fan, but other than Spidey not joking enough, thought the character was usually handled well, and that the awkwardness of Maguire's Parker was... kind of the point. Anyway, as a Batman fan, this article was basically the equivalent of typing up "Why Tim Burton's Batman movies SUCK!" It's deliberately poking the hornet's nest.

The butthurt in the comments section is palpable. Oh no, someone wrote an opinion I don’t care for so I demand he is fired for it!

The sheer entitlement of some of you is completely unreal.

@Baconstrip78: it's pretty funny when you accuse us of being butthurt when it was the person who wrote this article that was butthurt, since, if he wasn't, he'd not write this off-beat slandering of Raimi's Spider-Man. And the problem is that he wrote his opinion about a news that's completely unrelated. He writes that Raimi's Spider-Man sucks on a news about a DLC suit from the recent Spider-Man game. How's that even related? It's a suit from the movie that you can add to your game. That's not a precedent for such thing.

@Baconstrip78:

Saying someone is “butthurt” for strongly disagreeing with an opinion is a cop-out for saying anything you want but dismissing any of the consequences of what you say. The author said something controversial, so people will voice their displeasure and rebut. They have that right just as much as the author had to voice his opinion.

This is (almost) a new all-time low for Gamespot. I´m surprised why i am on this site from time to time, but Jesus.. the dude that wrote this article should be laid off and sacked for making this unprofessional clickbait article. Using your position to unload your hate for a movie franchise is just a NO. You can use your own YouTube channel for that..

It´s the worst i have come across so far on this site, To the editor of this site, WAKE UP and do YOUR job..

@xantufrog: actually as someone above said if his article trashes the readers of your site as opposed to just the film itself, it is most DEFINITELY NOT his job. And on a news piece about the release of dlc, multiple paragraphs trashing the film are not even remotely necessary or wanted as “part of his job”. Stop defending this trash bc you guys are buddies.

If that's his job, his job has no value, then. It makes no sense to write a slandering review for Raimi's Spider-Man by using news about the inclusion of his Spider-Man suit to a video game as the precedent.

@xantufrog: Don't put words in my mouth. You know very well what I said, and it sure as hell was not what you just said. I did not condemn the guy for writing his opinion. I condemned him for writing his opinion in such an immature manner. He throws jabs at Sam Raimi Spider-Man on an unrelated news. That's why I called him out. Disagreeing or agreeing with him is irrelevant.

He has just as much right to disagree and say why he disagrees as Mr. Hussein did to voice his opinion in a public forum. Imagine if someone questions a politician on an issue during a town hall meeting on a policy he disagrees with and someone stands up and says, “Sit down snowflake! No one gives a s**t what you think!”

Not only is it extremely rude, it’s unconstitutional.

Tamoor, if you simply felt the urge to express your negative feelings towards Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, wouldn’t it be smarter to just make an article dedicated to the topic, instead of using a news about a costume from the movie appearing in the recent Spider-Man game as the precedent to throw your off-beat remarks about those movies? It makes you sound vitriolic and unprofessional. Not that your “points” would sound any less vitriolic if they were actually explained in a post that’s related to your sentiments.

“But I can complain. And I will. Because, unfortunately, for many others out there this only serves to remind us of that sad six-year period where everyone was so desperate for a superhero movie that didn't make them embarrassed to be comic book fan that they doublethinked themselves into believing that trilogy was good.”

For one, if the suit is enough to trigger you and give you crippling depression about your horrible six years of life (which, believe me, were most likely horrible for reasons unrelated to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies), can’t you just, you know, not add it to your game and not play the game wearing it? As simple as that. Second of all, how exactly liking that trilogy is any more embarrassing than liking any other superhero franchise of today? What is the delineation that sets its part so much for you that liking it equates to embarrassment? Why liking Spider-Man movies by Sam Raimi should be more embarrassing than liking Marvel Cinematic Universe movies? They’re kind of the same thing. Superhero movies that are fun and crowd-pleasing. The MCU simply has more bathos in its dialogue and scenes wheres Raimi’s Spider-Man movies always kept balance of drama and comedy and did not merge two together.

“It wasn't.”

Except, it was.

“For the most part though, those movies were awkward,”

Probably because the titular character is supposed to be an awkward guy with insecurities.

“cheesy,”

90% of superhero movies that have come out in the past seven or more years have been cheesy. The Avengers was cheesy. Guardians of the Galaxy were cheesy. Aquaman was cheesy. So?

“and completely failed to look beyond the surface of what makes Spidey interesting.”

What makes Spider-Man interesting is the idea of him being an insecure guy who lives a double life and he has to balance both sides of it and he doesn’t always, but he finds strength to keep going, because he is driven by an overbearing guilt that he can’t ignore. This is basically what all three movies were about.

Oh, and in case you want to talk about comic book accuracy of those movies, have a look at this (the title is ironic, btw):

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/spider-man-167/proof-that-sam-raimi-is-a-hack-that-never-read-a-s-1878519/

Spider-Man 2 is one of the most quotable superhero movies of all time. When aunt May is having that talk with Peter while she's cleaning out her garage about the importance of the hero, you wondering if she secretly knows Peter's Spider-Man and is trying to convince him to keep going.

Maguire's not Mr. Charismatic, but the role was absolutely written in a way where it wasn't needed. This version of Peter was seriously vulnerable, which made his heroics more impressive, in that light.

You thought TAS Spider-Man was better? Ok, you have no say in what’s good.

If it wasn’t for the Raimi trilogy. Comic Book movies would still be low budget schlock with a director’s tastes trumping staying true to the source material. Say what you want about the Raimi trilogy, especially the 3rd one, but he showed Hollywood that bright colors and spandex can WORK. This article comes off as snarky and smug as Jim Sterling crapping all on Breath of the Wild as a terrible game just because he didn’t like the durability factor and then trying to sell his singular opinion as a wholesale fact.

Perhaps you should put less op-Ed in your gaming news, because otherwise you’re going to quickly become the most hated journalist on GS...and that takes some doing.

While I share Tamoor's opinion on the Rami trilogy (I was horribly disappointed in them) I definitely don't agree with the condescending tone in which it was given. It's one thing to have an opinion. It's another thing to crap all over someone else's while you tell them why they have it and make it sound so belittling. But welcome to the internet I guess...

I just created a profile on this website to comment here and say this writer comes across as an obnoxious moron. The title of the article is obviously clickbait and the whole thing serves no purpose other than for the idiot to spew his hatred at a series of movies that are over a decade old. Sorry you have awful taste and dislike the Raimi movies, but there are plenty of people out there that do like them and you'd have done well to remember that before insulting them. I for one am glad the suit has been added and will be using it.

I'll be sure to never visit this site again, no matter how clickbaity the next article's title is.

Nope, he was the best. Not in Spiderman 3, but that was due to terrible writing. Just pretend 3 doesn't exist.

Tom Holland is a good Spiderman. I hate how they gave him a super suit though. Now a large portion of his abilities are in his suit which basically makes him iron man.

Andrew Garfield was by far the worst.

@bgrosz: Pretend SM3 dosn't exist, how selfish are u? You don't even give it a chance and acknowledge the good things about it and dismiss it as a childhood rapping nightmare probably because the internet does so? Or something like that. Also Andrew Garfield wasn't that bad either and could have been better if the studio, Sony, hadn't screwed things over (Similar to sm3, but than again, it isn;'t that bad.)

@bgrosz: Yeah, I feel like it kind of belittled the origin story. The whole thing was getting bitten by the spider. But giving Peter the choice does make the character motivation more active, where in the original telling of the story, it's more thrust upon him and he doesn't really have a choice.

@vfighter: I don't think so. The main point about Spidey is that he was created as the first teenage superhero that was not anyone's sidekick. It was his whole point. He had no mentors and no one to look up other than his uncle and aunt. Homecoming makes Spidey an Iron Man Jr. And yeah, you can tell me how the movie is about him moving away from Iron Man's shadow; I don't care. The point is that Peter never had to move out of anyone's shadow, because he never had anyone to overshadow him in the first place. He was on his own.

@guudgidga: Drawing attention to a shady business practice, even if it makes that practice more successful in the short-term, is a viable long term strategy. If it gets people to start thinking about the writers' intentions so they will start ignoring things like this in the future, then that's a success.

And BTW, they are not that bad at all, and for their time and RAIMI's style. So relax bro.
