Two additional directors have been announced for the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Variety reports that Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson are working alongside Joaquim Dos Santos, who had previously been announced.

Dos Santos was confirmed as director on the animated superhero sequel back in November 2018. Although Powers and Thompson's names have only just been revealed, Variety states that the trio have been working on the movie from the start. The first film also had three directors--Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman.

Now Playing: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - Official Trailer

Powers is the co-director and co-writer of Pixar's most recent movie, Soul, as well as the writer of the acclaimed drama One Night in Miami, for which he has been Oscar nominated. Thompson was production designer on the first Into the Spider-Verse, and his other extensive animation credits include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Angry Birds Movie, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and The Powerpuff Girls.

In a joint statement, Dos Santos, Powers, and Thompson said, "The crew behind the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set such a ridiculously high bar, and we're humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales."

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 hits theaters on October 7, 2022 and will be produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller one more. The only confirmed cast members so far are Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, who will reprise their roles as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey. Producer Amy Pascal previously revealed that the movie will focus on the relationship between Miles and Gwen, as well as acting as a launch for a female-focused spin-off movie.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018 and made more than $375 million at the worldwide box office. It also found success at 2019's Academy Awards, where it won the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
