The Advanced Edition update for the fantastic FTL: Faster Than Light is now available as a free download on PC.

Users who own the game on Steam should get the update beamed automatically onto their hard drives using Gaben's special magic powers, and the game's developers have created a page with instructions for those who purchased the game from another outlet.

The free Advanced Edition adds mind control and hacking systems, a new sector, and events written by author Tom Jubert and Fallout: New Vegas scribe Chris Avellone, alongside new weapons, effects, layouts, and environments. The update will also add tweaks to the whole game, including the option to save and quit during combat.

Meanwhile, FTL has now been released for the iPad. The game costs $10 and runs on an iPad 2 or newer, and comes with the Advanced Edition by default.

@SingletreeAve @DarkSaber2k We were so hardcore in those C64 days, if the game failed to load after a half hour of waiting....we just tried again!

Cassettes and 5 1/4 floppy disks that were actually floppy! And those elitists who bought cartridges for the C64, those guys had serious cash. Those were good times. *Sigh*

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You are entitled to your opinion but at 40 and having gamed since before graphic card and text based strategy games and text based adventure games were king - I do not see how you can dislike any form of the genre. I love 3D worlds but still love to go back to neo geo games whenever I can. Games like this one where there is strategy involved are great in their 2D form and gain very little from being anything more than what they are.

Consider this.

For a small dev its easier and cost effective to get the concept of the game out the door providing sprite based graphics over trying to pump it all into a 3D engine. I personally am very happy to see these small games, they are perfect for tablets and phone and at time can be more funny than a big 3D generated empty lifeless world.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not arguing which one is better . I play games to get immersed into a different world. 2D does not give me that. So they are fun for about 10 minutes and I'm bored. That are simply not entertaining for me. Like I have said multiple times. Its a simple matter of preference. I've tried them. They simply bore me .But again if you like them good for you.

@spartanx169x @blackpuddytat I don't think that FTL would claim that it's graphical candy by any means, but I think that it's appeal lies in that it has such tight mechanics in combat and resource management. It's simple to learn but there's a lot to master through multiple playthroughs and it's a great game to play for an hour or two in between playing other bigger AAA games.

There's some really tense action to be had, coupled with it's risk vs reward moments. Sometimes these types of games are just evolutions of D&D type boardgames, albeit the dice rolls and rules/mechanics are handled behind the scenes and you're just left to enjoy the action and story.

I think there's a simple joy in games like these, some are just mindless fun and others like FTL do a few things but do them so very well. Indie developers know that their games won't appeal to everybody, but most already know their intended audience/market and are usually happy to make a decent living in selling to them.

@spartanx169xThe point of games is to be fun. Whether they're 2D or 3D is completely irrelevant: a good game is a good game. I can easily argue real-life games are better than your 3D.
Avoiding 2D is only hurting yourself.

@spartanx169x That's one of the most ridiculous things I've seen anyone say honestly... no offence intended, it just seems more than a bit silly to discredit 2D games just because 3D has become mainstream...

And riding a bicycle is a lot better than riding a car for many reasons, just as riding a car is better than riding a bike for many other reasons... basically there's room to enjoy both, just as there is with 3D and 2D games.

PS, this games rocks!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Where I'm going with the questions is this, like I said below, Playing 2D games now like riding a bicycle to get where you want to go instead of driving a car. A very nice car. It baffles me. There is an obvious fanbase for these games. no denying that. If you like them, good for you , I won't criticize you. If that's what you like its cool .Its simply a matter of preference. Myself I lost complete interest in 2d games once the first xbox and PS1 came along.

When did early 1990's style games become popular again? This game looks like its straight from the early 90s. when 3D games were only wishful thinking.

@reacher42 @spartanx169x I played 2D games when that's all there was to play. playing them is going back not forward. But that's just me. Hey if you like it , have at it. . And I mean that in a good way. I've already lived it. I will not go back. :)

@spartanx169x @reacher42 You're definitely missing out then with a silly limitation like this. 2D games still look great and play great. This is a quality little game.

@tomservo51 @gamerno66666 Sorry pal, I wasn't intending to mislead. But I can clearly see a lot of comments saying that I have, so that's probably one I should take on the chin. What can I say, I had about thirty things all going on at once this afternoon. It's been a long week and I'm knackered :(

I wanted people to realise that the Advanced Edition was a free download, because in today's world I think everyone just expects expansions to cost money.

Really, I also want everyone to download it and play it because FTL is chuffing amazing and I want everyone to play it always.
