Sony Wants A Faster Shift From PS4 To PS5 Than In Previous Generations

Sony is aiming for "a scale and a pace that we've never delivered on before" for players adopting the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge seller for Sony, recently becoming the second-best selling console ever--only behind the PlayStation 2, which is unlikely to be overtaken. With the PS4 growing older, Sony is looking to segue that into success for its next generation and continue these high sales figures. New PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says the company's main goal is to move the community from the current generation to the PlayStation 5 more quickly than it has in the past.

Referencing the success of the PS4, Ryan told GI.biz about leveraging the strong brand to the next gen.

Now Playing: Sony Wants You To Buy A PS5 Faster Than Usual - GS New Update

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky and engaged and passionate about PlayStation to an extent that we've not seen in previous generations," he said. "As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks--probably our main task--is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."

It's unclear how Sony plans to move players along to the new console or if this will impact its stated plans of releasing games cross-platform. Ryan went on to point out that developers and publishers have given good feedback on the PS5's development tools, something that was a particular issue with the PS3.

"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform."

This comes as Sony reshuffles its management to prepare for the next generation, which includes a more globalized strategy. For more on Sony's next console, check out everything we know about the PlayStation 5.

Weeeeell, this is actually the least certain I’ve ever been that I’ll be buying a new PlayStation. Including vita and psp.

I’ve got less money now, plus my backlog is insane, plus Sony doesn’t care about backwards compatibility like Microsoft does.

I’m sure it’ll continue to have great games though. I may try to be sensible and get playstation now instead for exclusives, either on ps5 or 4 if it allows you to, or else just stick to Microsoft and Nintendo.

@wolfpup7: ps5 is fully backwards compatible with PS4. I wonder if they’ll initiate some sort of buyback program for early adopters...

The easiest way to ensure early adoption would be to install some malware in the PS4 that would get remotely triggered and smoke all those units on the day PS5 releases. Otherwise the PS5's raw power with handling 4K and backwards compatibility with at least PS4, if not all generations, should be reasons enough.

If they gave me the PS5 for free, I still wouldn’t trade in my PS4.

@walbo: I still have all of my Playstation machines. Playing my library of games from each era on the actual console they were created for is a much more authentic and enjoyable experience to me than transferring them over to the newest hardware. I'd rather just wait until the PS5 is on sale than surrender my piece of Playstation history for a discount, even if that discount were 100%.

Wow, so they are going to give away free PS5s then, or at least a 50% trade in scheme. Nice one Sony!

If they have to code differently that also tells me ps4 games won't work unless the game developer does it. Which is bad.

This tells me ps5 games may not run on the ps4. This is why the Xbox One X is superior.

Depends on pricing. If it's $399 out the gate then yea sure. But if it's anything higher than $400 than I'll be waiting a couple years before I purchase. I wasn't in any rush to buy the PS4 when it came out in 2013 and I won't be in a rush when it comes out next year. I didn't get my PS4 till almost 3 years later

Full backward compatibility with PS4 games and I'll buy as soon as I can!

Since I am still on standard PS4 and would appreciate a performance boost, and sharper PSVR games.

If not, I might wait a while.

@playstationzone: No big deal for me tbh, I buy most of my games digitally, cuz it is faster and cheaper for me.
I do miss physical copies though.

The Best way to increase adoption to a new platform has always been the simplest way- release a killer must have app. This has proven true every generation. A 'must have game'. A Poor xbox one launch gave PS the lead, but it was great games and exclusives that sold 100million consoles and more importantly gave it one of the highest 'tie-in' ratios the gaming industry has ever seen.

So bring on the games. But here is the sad news, Sony needs to draw a line in the sand and make PS5 only games, THAT are not playable on the old 8th gen systems. Nothing wrong in releasing most games with 2 versions, a 8th gen one and a 9th gen one. But faster adoption to a next gen platform means, these games are gonna have to have some high end content, that the old gen simply cannot play.

Can see part of that plan in action right now, keeping the PS4 Pro at $399 so that no one buys it

Sounds like they know it is not going to be fully compatible with PS4 so they are trying to ensure people don't have a PS4 and have to either buy one again or buy digital 'remastered' copies that work on PS5 at a higher price.

Personally, a library of good launch games, true backwards compatability and cheaper cost of online (or free) are what will draw my attention immediately.

To make the ps5 a must buy right away include backwards compatible. If it isn't at least backwards compatible with digital AND physical ps4 games it's a wait a couple years to buy. The backwards compatibility is huge deal maker of deal breaker for me, it means a lot more than a good launch line up. Generally a good launch line up, leaves the rest of yeR somewhat lacking, so being able to play games from prior generation is a huge plus.

It depends on the price of the system like if it's $499.99 then I'll wait till it drops in price to $199.99 before getting one.

Backwards compatibility and one killer game would make me buy one day one. I know its not common to have an actually really good game for launch, few exceptions (Mario 64, BOTW, Halo), but something like a Horizon Zero Dawn 2 would be amazing.

@JEF8484: Gotta admit I still don't entirely trust that there version of Backwards compatibility won't be "well you can download your digital library, but not your physical games."

or worse. "its backwards compatible, all these games are available on PsNow, for a small additional fee"

The ONLY way Sony would get me to buy a PS5 before a slim is released is if it's both FULLY BC with every game from EVERY region and every Sony device (PS1-4, PSP AND Vita) and $200 . Otherwise they can follow The Rock's advice from when he still wrestled about turning it sideways and sticking it somewhere. One small step they could take that'd change my opinion of their devices and gaming in general is to stop charging for P2P online play.

@meedokicky: RIF. I said I would like a PS5 with full BC with every prior console from Sony (including the handhelds) AND for it to be priced at $200. Not that I want them to give me $200. But if they're so inclined I wouldn't refuse it. At least then I could use it to pay for the peer to peer (aka not costing them much) paid online nonsense they started this gen.

Quickest way to get people to do that is make it backward compatible withe PS4, PS3, PS2 and PS1.

Everyone will flock to it,

@Sound_Demon: If only 360 was more reliable. Even my S model consoles have both died which is really annoying as both are limited edition models with one being Halo Reach and the Other being Starwars.

Xbox is in a very strong position with the best studios going forward. It will be way more interesting . Can't wait for the new Fable reveal for a start.

@deviltaz35: That sucks to hear. I also had Reach edition. That was the last FPS with a great story. Titanfall 2 had a nice campaign but not as fleshed out.

Hopefully Xbox puts up more of a fight going forward for our consumer benefit. I really liked Fable 1.

Well i can see it happening, i mean the PS3>PS4 (Including the later addition which is the Pro) All only had Regular Blu Ray Players in. And the fact the PS5 is gonna have an actual 4K capable player in it, already makes it a better investment. My Playstation consoles have always been my multimedia center for gaming & for watching Movies on, and i've been slowly investing into the 4K movie scene with a bunch of movies, a 4K TV and a new sound Bar, Only thing i'm missing is a 4K player, which the PS5 is going to check that box.
