Sony Wants A Faster Shift From PS4 To PS5 Than In Previous Generations

Sony is aiming for "a scale and a pace that we've never delivered on before" for players adopting the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge seller for Sony, recently becoming the second-best selling console ever--only behind the PlayStation 2, which is unlikely to be overtaken. With the PS4 growing older, Sony is looking to segue that into success for its next generation and continue these high sales figures. New PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says the company's main goal is to move the community from the current generation to the PlayStation 5 more quickly than it has in the past.

Referencing the success of the PS4, Ryan told GI.biz about leveraging the strong brand to the next gen.

Now Playing: Sony Wants You To Buy A PS5 Faster Than Usual - GS New Update

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky and engaged and passionate about PlayStation to an extent that we've not seen in previous generations," he said. "As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks--probably our main task--is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."

It's unclear how Sony plans to move players along to the new console or if this will impact its stated plans of releasing games cross-platform. Ryan went on to point out that developers and publishers have given good feedback on the PS5's development tools, something that was a particular issue with the PS3.

"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform."

This comes as Sony reshuffles its management to prepare for the next generation, which includes a more globalized strategy. For more on Sony's next console, check out everything we know about the PlayStation 5.

Crazy how fast the PS2 musta sold, the PS4 is nowhere near and it’s 6 years later.

Tbh though make The Last of Us 2 a PS5 launch exclusive.... people will want to buy it.

@Terrorantula: PS2 shipments went from March of 2000 to December 2012. That's 12 years worth of sales time. The console was officially discontinued on January 4, 2013.

So in comparison the PS4 is doing just a bit better. In March 2006 the PS2 was at 103 million units versus PS4 at the same mark a few weeks short of 6 years.

@darkelf83: I agree, but the PS3 and the Wii were released in 2006 and the Xbox 360 was released in 2005.

This is a bigger statement on the quality of the console and the games than anything else.

The console continued to sell by the millions, even after their next gen competitors had already been released. If i remember correctly, it outsold the XBOX 360 in the whole of the fiscal year 2006. That is as close to a miracle as we're ever gonna see.

@tlpina: Absolutely. The PS2 was a solid console and I loved it. I don't see the PS4 being as strong post PS5 unless people do not consider it a worthwhile upgrade. This next year will be a bit telling as PS4 sales wind down for PS5 launch.

Unless they plan on having some kind of deal where they eat the cost of people transitioning to PS5, I don't see it happening.

@Sepewrath: if it sells as fast as the ps4, they Should be happy. From what I see next gen will be a software war and not a hardware one.

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky"

I know the air is thin up in that ivory tower, but why would you ever use "sticky" as an adjective to describe gamers? Sounds perverted.

@Richardthe3rd: Sticky is a sleazy corporate term used to describe customers that they are able to trick or force to stay on a game or platform, continuing to spend.

Free to play developers use it a lot.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah I know what it means, it's just amazes me how out of touch they are to actually coin a colloquialism for "gullible" and use it when engaging that same audience.

The audacity is pretty shocking.

A big factor is the price, if the importation taxes of that psycho a.k.a Donald Trump become real, the prices of consoles would rise a lot, I doubt many people would buy an almost $1000 dollar console at launch.

@Tidus1012: its more likely to be £500 whats that in dollars $600?

With the ever growing software requirements like say cyberpunk your gonna need to have the "pc" architecture now to run them.

That costs as the pc guys already know.

With the ps5 maybe comparable to a high mid range pc spec now, you're still paying considerably less than the pc equivalent i think again dependant on what you want in pc.

So $600 isnt too bad is it?

Try the alternative pc route and see how much that will cost.

:)

@Tidus1012: at launch? Lol IF it was even 500-600 I still wouldn't buy it at launch. $1000 at launch means that evne in 5years+ that console will be around 500$ which would still be not worth it when ps6 comes out

Ditching paid online multiplayer and having backwards compatibility will help. Shame Sony didn't do this with the PlayStation 4.

@consolehaven: And if the games offered through PS+ are as good as you think they are, the only thing requiring it for online play is doing is turning people off from the system who would have bought it otherwise, which I do believe is a contributing factor on why Steam got a huge boost in users this console gen.

@alaannn:

Thank you.

Same.

Instead of going console this whole Gen, I upgraded my PC and also went handheld.

The library just made more sense that way.

PS5 is appealing with backwards compatible in mind ...but they need a stronger unique line-up this time. I also gotta wonder if this very well could be the end of discs soon enough, which makes the case for 1 last library.

Best of luck to you, Sony, but as it stands I won't be getting a PS5. Granted we don't know all that much about PS5 yet so they might change my mind, but so far I'm not interested considering their policies regarding the censorship of games, and frankly they style of games they've been putting out in recent years just hasn't appealed to me. I was only really excited for God of War 4, Spider-Man, and Days Gone other than that, meh. Give me a new InFamous game, God of War 5, Siren 3, and maybe try to encourage 3rd party developers put out more of their PS exclusive franchises faster. Heck, do what Microsoft has been doing and buy up some of the defunct or struggling companies then put them to work on some new exclusive titles. Like, imagine if Sony bought up the remnants of Visceral Entertainment and have them make a spiritual successor to Dead Space.

@zackgrutza: I love Yakuza, but like you said, it has been getting ported to PC lately and I have no doubt that Yakuza 7 will come to PC eventually as well, provided that all the games leading up to it continue to be profitable on PC. As for Persona, meh. I wanted to like P5, but some of the palaces were incredibly tedious and I honestly feel that the series has too many restrictions on time management which need to be greatly relaxed. I dislike how the game initially gives you the freedom to manage your schedule, yet begins taking it away and rail-roading you as the game progresses for silly reasons like some upcoming event.

@Barighm: If there are indeed games on PS4 that sexualize "litte girls" then Sony should ban them outright, not simply censor them by making them wear more clothing. Besides, I'm talking about stupid stuff like censoring bikinis worn by full grown women in DoA.

The main factors are going to be price, backwards compatibility (including digital purchases from PSN) and having a good number of good games at launch.

@LesserAngel: I doubt it will have BC, that has become a thing of the past. The price is likely going to be the same as the PS4 launch or more. The games at launch are likely predominately going to be cross platform/gen games like every other console launch.

I think they will offer backwards compatibility with all the PS4 games. Then they'll advertise heavily the ease of transfer to the new console, and the benefits you'll be gaining: reduced loading times and better graphics (by requesting game developers to release patches to make the PS4 games use the new hardware... like they did with the PS4 Pro)

They may even offer the vaunted cross-play only on PS5... that will surely get a lot of ppl to migrate :)

@Shinnok789: I doubt BC will be a thing again, the only reason MS did it--was out of desperation to try and move hardware and the brand. Sony doesn't stand to make money off of BC and they are very high on themselves and the brand. Not to mention, you're not going to sell a lot of people on buying a new system to play old games.

@Sepewrath: BC is most definitely a thing. Mark Cerny already confirmed it, with the goal of the whole library carrying over. It's the same basic hardware configuration so there's also no reason NOT to include it. And Ps5 is gonna need it. People eventually grow sick of having 20+ consoles to play 20 different games.

@Shinnok789: Most of those patches were purely for higher resolutions. The Pro did boost existing games...until you were forced to use the patches which sucked because I preferred the performance boost. The PS5 shouldn't require these patches if boost mode is already built in. It should just run the base game with more stability. You'd like to see more effects but I doubt most devs will bother with updating older games...unless it's a remaster they want you to buy.

If the PS5 releases more expensive than the PS4 did in Brazil, you cannot expect many people will go from PS4 to PS5 so soon there.

In my shoes, I wont buy a PS5 until 3 years after its release day, since I'll wait for a PS5 Pro. I still have a standard PS4 and I regret not knowing Sony would release the PS4 pro before I bought mine.

@tiller720: I was thinking the same thing. I'd be happy to trade in my PS2 and PS3 if the PS5 has full backward compatibility with those consoles. The PS5 hardware is more than powerful enough to emulate those systems, and Sony has the know-how to do it. That would be a huge selling point.
