Sony Wants A Faster Shift From PS4 To PS5 Than In Previous Generations

Sony is aiming for "a scale and a pace that we've never delivered on before" for players adopting the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge seller for Sony, recently becoming the second-best selling console ever--only behind the PlayStation 2, which is unlikely to be overtaken. With the PS4 growing older, Sony is looking to segue that into success for its next generation and continue these high sales figures. New PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says the company's main goal is to move the community from the current generation to the PlayStation 5 more quickly than it has in the past.

Referencing the success of the PS4, Ryan told GI.biz about leveraging the strong brand to the next gen.

Now Playing: Sony Wants You To Buy A PS5 Faster Than Usual - GS New Update

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky and engaged and passionate about PlayStation to an extent that we've not seen in previous generations," he said. "As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks--probably our main task--is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."

It's unclear how Sony plans to move players along to the new console or if this will impact its stated plans of releasing games cross-platform. Ryan went on to point out that developers and publishers have given good feedback on the PS5's development tools, something that was a particular issue with the PS3.

"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform."

This comes as Sony reshuffles its management to prepare for the next generation, which includes a more globalized strategy. For more on Sony's next console, check out everything we know about the PlayStation 5.

Don't make the price higher than $399

and

Make sure there are some heavy hitting exclusives in the first year.

@srfilk86: When the specs were shown I was arguing with people that were saying it's going to be $1000. It won't be $1000 cause Sony isn't picking up the components from the shelf, it will likely be around $600. But in no way possible will it be $400.

@livedreamplay: Ps5 will be 499$. Right now Navi sells for 400$, a year from now it will be 300$, AMD gonna spice it a little bit andand make it 20 percent faster, Alas raytraced 500$ console. Its clear as a day.

@livedreamplay: If it's $600, Xbox will win at launch. Most people won't pay that. Especially parents buying for their kids. $400 is the max acceptable price for most console gamers. Any higher then you might as well save up for a PC.

@srfilk86: Nope. People will still flock to it. $400 was ok 7 years ago, or for a mediocre upgrade, not going to be the norm for the next generation too. And Xbox is going to probably match it, unless they'll have much weaker hardware...

Two easy ways: make the new console cheap at launch and have full backwards compatibility - even across older systems than just 4 without needing a subscription to a mostly useless service if you're looking to play specific games.

@sbargovox3:

BC was confirmed, although only for PS4 since the other consoles have a different architecture and they've given up on that idea a while ago. As for the price, given the specs they've show I don't think they'll pull off anything cheap. Unless you consider $600 cheap.

@livedreamplay: 600$ sounds a lot like the PS3 and we all know how that ended up. Also, I find it odd independent coders can create emulators that work just fine, even on smartphones in some cases, but the people who made the original hardware and coding can't make what's essentially a gimped PC emulate their back catalogue games.

Considering the massive back log I have on PS4 and that they always seem to release a better version of the console, I will wait a couple of years before buying it. Not sure what would make me buy it faster to be honest.

sony already lost the race and it's obvious. they must show more than what xbox did in the last year. Or they will lose some of their exclusive.

@pcps4xb: That's hardly determined.

Sony dodged a bullet with the PS4 launch. Microsoft kept stepping on rakes during the Xbox One launch (forced kinect, always online, price point). Sony provided the status quo that gamers wanted.

Microsoft seems to have gotten the memo. They have been providing great value with the Xbox game pass and scooping up well regarded game developers to produce exclusives. They are also promoting cross play.

The next console generation will be a street fight and that's a great thing for gamers. I hope both do well.

@pcps4xb: I believe the xbox one will sell more to the streamers (all those Netflix/Disney plus /hbo) too and those who wants to chat as it is becoming a lot better in that area. streaming from xbox to ipad or iPhone or to pc or vice versa. with their ultimate game pass it is a lot cheaper too, they are just missing those few rpgs that ps4 has a bit more.

@waven101: they're missing more than a few rpgs. I'm a fan of any game besides sports and my xbox has been sitting last year and this yr until gears 5 released. Xbox may or may not sell more to streamers but the majority of gamers play direct and orefer not to stream so that's a minority. PlayStation goes for the majority and when the day come and changes to mostly streaming, PlayStation Will take the lead. They're just the bigger/more popular gaming company.

Well, they could let people exchange their PS4s for a PS5. That sure would accelerate the process cause even though due to backwards compatibility people now have a good reason to get a PS5 right away, it'll still cost some money. And especially if your PS4 isn't that old yet you might not want to replace it already, having to pay the full price for it again.

All I'm getting is "We want to sell more and as quickly as possible".

Talk about stating the obvious, what business doesn't want that?

If they're going to sell PS5 quickly then there are going to have to be a multitude of reasons to buy it. Having one exclusive game at the start of PS5's life for example isn't going to endear anyone but the truly hardcore gamers to the system.

@gotrekfabian: Backwards compatibility is the main reason. You no longer have to wait for enough good games to be released. Instead you'll probably be able to play all current gen games in 4K and with higher framerates and much reduced loading times. That has never really been a thing before and there was rarely a reason to get a new console at launch, just for maybe one launch title you liked.

The only way they can "transition" faster without selling their consoles at a loss in the beginning is to provide free and easy transfer systems to transfer your multiplayer and singleplayer progress from PS4 to PS5. Just like they did for GTA V, they need to do this for all games. This way, the only thing gamers will have to deal with is a significant bump in performance when upgrading which, of course, isn't a negative at all.

This most likely wont happen. From the sounds of the next consoles, it sounds like they will be the most expensive consoles that Microsoft and Sony have made. I have a feeling that people will be buying consoles slower than this generation at least for the first 2 years. Unless they decide to sell their consoles at a loss in the beginning, which they have done before.

I'll pre-order it. PS4 Pro has been well worth it. PS4 exclusives continue to be head and shoulders the best. It's cool that's backwards compatible - I have a pile of games backed up sitting in my library that I started, I liked, but that was surplanted by something better. Eventually I'll get around to them.

@dmblum1799: BTW I will keep my PS4 pro for the extra hard drive space. There are *a lot* of games that are great and don't need the power, like Persona 5 or Divinity OS 2.

I hope PS4 can reach 14m sold by Q4 this year and around maybe 9-10m next year. I just want the console to try and crack 130m sales. Also its pretty crazy, the console is still selling officially at $299.

They haven't even convinced me the PS4 Pro is not an oversized paperweight yet.

So far their consoles have gone from pretty amazing for PS1, to incredible for PS2 , to interesting for PS3 to rather forgetful with PS4/Pro.

I haven't even switched the Pro on for almost 2 months.

@deviltaz35: I bought a Pro in 2019 and got some time out of it initially, catching up on the exclusives I'd missed from the gen.

That took me all of 2 months, and I honestly haven't turned the Pro on for any reason other than to collect the free games since the beginning of summer. If I'm going to play a serious session it doesn't hold a candle to my PC or even my Switch to be honest. There's just better ways to play right now and I hope Sony can create some more interest.

@deviltaz35: I'm in the same situation after getting my rig in April: my sole purchase for my PS4 Pro this year has been Catherine Full Body and I bought Japanese exclusives like Judgment last year because it was already out in my part of the world. Now my Pro has been inactive since July while my Steam library's growing faster than I could clear the backlog. I really can't see myself just obsessing the lone AAA exclusive banger or two for the entire year that console fanboys do anymore.

If they want people to transition faster, they should do a buy back program like Apple does with iphones.. Since PS5 will be backwards compatible, I'd be willing to get a PS5 right away if they give me some money for my old PS4.

@demayor: It’s never been easier to sell something online. Apple’s profit margins on hardware is much higher than Sony’s. That said, I think MS is offering something to that effect through their Microsoft access program.

@consolehaven: I get that, but that requires the user to put the effort to list and negotiate the price, ship, etc. A trade-in program like Apple's would more because all you'd have to do is show up with your old PS4 and leave with a brand new PS5. Of course that would depend on how much they are willing to give you as trade in value.

But you'd trade in your whole collection of games and hardware for a flashy new console that only has a few games available from the get go?

They want you to transition faster to a console that will be barren for the first 18 to 24 months.

Is this really a good investment?
