Sony Wants A Faster Shift From PS4 To PS5 Than In Previous Generations

Sony is aiming for "a scale and a pace that we've never delivered on before" for players adopting the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge seller for Sony, recently becoming the second-best selling console ever--only behind the PlayStation 2, which is unlikely to be overtaken. With the PS4 growing older, Sony is looking to segue that into success for its next generation and continue these high sales figures. New PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says the company's main goal is to move the community from the current generation to the PlayStation 5 more quickly than it has in the past.

Referencing the success of the PS4, Ryan told GI.biz about leveraging the strong brand to the next gen.

Now Playing: Sony Wants You To Buy A PS5 Faster Than Usual - GS New Update

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky and engaged and passionate about PlayStation to an extent that we've not seen in previous generations," he said. "As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks--probably our main task--is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."

It's unclear how Sony plans to move players along to the new console or if this will impact its stated plans of releasing games cross-platform. Ryan went on to point out that developers and publishers have given good feedback on the PS5's development tools, something that was a particular issue with the PS3.

"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform."

This comes as Sony reshuffles its management to prepare for the next generation, which includes a more globalized strategy. For more on Sony's next console, check out everything we know about the PlayStation 5.

And what's single best way to achieve that goal? Make the ps5 affordable. Sell it for $250-300, and your goal of transitioning quickly will absolutely be accomplished. If you plan on selling it for $400+, you're gonna need to have some incredible tricks up your sleeve. Somehow tho I've got a hunch that the plan is the latter, minus the incredible tricks.

Sorry, but I don't see the PS5 selling for anywhere near $250 to $300.
With a 1 TB M.2 SSD (most likely 1TB as anything lower would be kinda useless), 8 Core / 16 Thread CPU, at least 16 GB of RAM (it could be more), and a GPU chip that will be around the 5700 to 5700 XT range (with Ray-Tracing from what I've heard), good luck for it to be at under $300.
Plus, having a 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive, is another upgrade.

With EVERYTHING that will be in the system, the PS5 is most likely going to be $499 to $599, easily (same price the PS3 launched at). Only this time, the price WOULD be justified.
Hell, I could even see a 2 TB system being like $699.99. And before ANYBODY says "nobody will spend that much", people spend over $1,000 on new phones, so your argument is invalid.

These will be one of the more expensive consoles released, especially with the large upgrade in technology (especially with the Ryzen CPUs), but actually have a lot of value to the cost.

And it would be even more justified if Sony can make the PS5 backward compatible with all PS4 games.
2 Console generations on 1 console will be a big plus for me

For somebody like me that never got a PS4, I'd probably get a PS5.
I'd had a wide range of PS4 games to play while I wait for some newer PS5 games.
There are MANY PS4 exclusive games that I never was able to play, and would be able to then

@MasterJ633: i agree with some of your points, but i think $399usd is the price point sony is going after. any higher and they will have a SERIOUS problem on their hands. the ps3 fared so poorly its first couple years on the market in part due to its ludicrious price point. sony will not make that mistake again. i can potentially see ps5 costing $450usd at most, but i think sony's goal is to keep it at the $400usd price which is what the ps4pro launched at. does this mean sony is willing to take a loss on the hardware this time? yes, absolutely. it will likely lose $100 per console the first couple of years and will depend entirely on its 1st party software lineup to differentiate itself. i wouldn't say this is a huge risk, though, because it has full confidence in its IP and exclusive content which many believe rival its competition.

I bought a PS4 when the library finally had 25 exclusives that I wanted to play. That was 4 years after release.

Good luck Sony. When people realize that 4k 60 with raytracing is impossible for less than 5k dollars and he most expensive single card setup worth thousands can't do it with current games

@faithxvoid: for now...but i read that in 2020 - 2021 there will be a huge jump in gpus architecture from nvidia and amd which will make them much stronger than even 2080 ti, so we might be getting 60fps with ray tracing very soon.

@dude_sh: Yes, Nvidia's 7nm chips is supposed to release next year and it should be an absolute beast. Finally 4k 60 ultra settings on RDR2 on a single card maybe???Should be good. Go Ampere!

Sony(or MS for that matter) aren't going with Nvidia though. AMD's new 7nm cards are a killer value. That's about the best thing you can say about the most current 7nm AMD card. It's definitely a better value than an 2060 RTX, but a 2080 ti (or 1080 ti for that matter) both out perform it at 14nm. The processor is said to be a modified AMD Navi chip. We've seen the 5700 XT. It's the architecture that's gonna keep costs down, sure, but render 4k 60 with raytracing it will not be able to do. Nvidia will because they will use EUV for their 7nm chips. They'll have greater transistor uniformity and denser chips. It'll be a massive jump ahead of AMD in power.

I'm not trying to ruin anyone's dreams of a $499 console that performs on a level no single card PC can achieve without massive OCs, but we're all reasonable people here. Let's just be realistic for a second.

@faithxvoid: It's being reported that the GPU inside the PS5 won't get anywhere near the RTX 2080. There is likely to be some kind of specialized type of ray-tracing for the consoles, but not as good as what is available on the PC.

@faithxvoid: definetely won't happen and that's just fine. According to Digital Foundry Sony set a new standard with Death Stranding so I can only imagine what Sony will do on PS5. Consoles moving forward is better for all gamers. The good part is even Pc's will see a jump also because normally we see the same just better looking when its ported.

Also, if you shut down online for the PS3, then you better refund me all the digital games I bought and can't access anymore, since the PS3 never had enough HDD space to contain everything I could buy.

I don't even have a PS4 yet, so you're going to be waiting awhile. And I won't buy a PS5 until it's $200 and has a huge library of huge games, so if you want people to move, you better get out a bunch of good games into the library quickly. And I mean GOOD games, not standard AAA crap like CoD and Fortnite.

By remastering PS4 games for PS5 like they did with PS3 games. Then people don't have to feel too attached to their PS4.

@spartanx169x: LOL. They can't win because the gaming community just moves the goal posts and complains no matter what. People were furious that PS4 isn't backwards compatible...and yet here you are denigrating them for making the PS5 backwards compatible.

@untouchables111: it will be 499$ for sure.

and also, they should focus on 60fps and not raytracing. i dont even care for it right now.

in 2023 they should do a ps5 pro with far better gpu for raytracing.

Sony will need at least 3 amazing exclusives on day one for me to buy the PS5 at launch, HZD2 would be a good start but then again I would hate them to rush it out and it lack the polish of the first one.

i get it, they're gunna push themselves so close to bankruptcy mass producing the fuckers they wanna be sure people will buy em.

but they will seriously piss people off if they shut down access to PS3/PS4 machines and games. So just make a good fuckin machine and I'll preorder it sony.

years after launch ps4 pro still doesn't let u do trivial things like alphabetize trophies, there's a massive list of things we demand from a PS5. make sure u tick em and we'll buy it.

give us DECENT trade in value on ps4/ps4 pro.

This worries Coolyfett a bit. The best way for PlayStation to transition players faster to PS5 is to just make games players want to play. Dont remove any features from PS4 or take away online access from the legacy systems. Offer more games for PS5 users on PS Plus.

Want to get people to buy PS5 in massive numbers and at unprecedented speed? Launch at 249$. Yes, go back to the days of hardware being a loss-leader. You'll sell them within a second of moving off the assembly line. Alas, this is all marketing gibberish and it will launch at 400$.

PS: It's likely going to be more than $400 considering the specs it has.

I’ve never been a day one buyer for consoles. I think I will be for the PS5 only because of BC. I won’t have to worry about lame launch titles and get the benefit of better hardware that should translate to my current games playing a tad bit better.

The only way they will move players over quickly is to make the ps5 under $300m that is a must. Beyond that though I don't know how they will convince the non-hardcore ps4 owners to upgrade right away.

Sony is very dependent on the sale of their consoles so to the lack of software.

Sony doesn’t have what Microsoft has in the software department.

Sony will probably just release an update to brick a good some of the the PS4 consoles.

@systemoverload: Dependant on the sale of console ? Didn't they say they would -again- sell consoles at a loss. (Like the PS3 which was considered expensive but was also the cheapest blueray player on the market for quite a while, heck, the army built a super computer out of them xD)

Software, ps+ and psnow is where they get their money.
They usually lure people with exclusives.
Their interface and networking tend to be inferior.
